Hello Sifu Izzo, I’m Andy, a fellow WC practitioner for about 15 years now (Leung Ting lineage), I enjoy the content, just wanted to ask you how many years you had the honor of training with Grandmaster Ip Ching (RIP) for? I’ve only seen him in videos but it must have been an amazing experience to chi sao with someone like that.
Great video! I'm really glad you mentioned Shawn "Seal the deal" Obassi using purely Wing Chun in MMA at the start of his career. I relate a lot to your perspective because I'm 5'7" too, not really law enforcement but private security and corrections officer for many years and professional wrestler. I learned Wing Chun when I was 13 (43 now), I don't know about lineages because I learned from my father who learned from a friend that came from Chicago to Puerto Rico and now both of them are dead so we couldn't trace the lineage, but it's been reliable for me for self defense situations since highschool and in private security along the years. I do mostly apply, like you said, the concepts, forward motion. That's my kind of Wing Chun.
I have trained Bjj Mma Muay thai etc and had a few ring fights. I did 6 months of wing chun and a larger guy I knew tried to test my training to show off whilst we were out once. I literally reacted and moved into him forward pressure punches and he was on the floor in seconds. It was fast and brutal but worked well so wing chun works if you use it properly and keep it simple 😂
Thank you for standing up and voicing these public misconceptions of the art. I like that just as wing chun, you are simple and direct with your words. As a practitioner of Qing chun currently, and in the past I did tkd karate and kali for 30 years, I realized that wing chun is something that you have to feel. Just watching it or seeing it gives you the wrong idea of what’s going on. I didn’t fully understand techniques and even the power generation of wing chun until I actually felt it. Of course, that’s me, and we all have unique individual outlooks, etc as we walk the path of our martial arts journey. Thanks for clarifying things for all to see.
@@IzzoWingChun My father taught me Pak Mei when I was a kid. So when I took Wing Chun for like 6 months when I was a teen, the Wing Chun guys often talked shit about Pak Mei, so it left a bad taste. But I do appreciate seeing Wing Chun guys taking Wing Chun to a new, more practical level.
@@Ed7501i heard Pak Mei and Wing Chun have similarities and flow well together. Thank to Sifu it rose to a bigger prominence, what are your opinions about its effectiveness? What do you think are its most defining elements?
Sparring like anything else in martial arts is a training tool to help teach concepts of the system. Just like forms, self defense patterns, etc. Rarely is anything used as a training tool in class going to occur in real life in the exact way practiced or trained in class.
Another great video, thanks brother. Agreed; if you’re in range, you need to be striking or have control of his spine(take his balance), through whatever contact you have.
Great debate and thanks for opening people’s eyes on this most important issue. I’m an older wing chun guy from NYC who started WC back in 1977, and I’ll tell you it’s been a lot of trial and error in finding out how all this WC stuff works. Having cross trained in other martial arts has given me similar points of view and has made me appreciate this debate, and also that I have been on the right track all along. Wing Chun is all about attacking an attack, and once in, knowing how to control someone’s center of gravity to your benefit, whether it’s knocking him out, placing him in a lock or pain compliance, or simply taking him to the ground. I agree with you with not going back out of range once you have closed the gap, because then it will turn into a sort of sparring back and fourth contest and true WC avoids this at all cost. Once in, it’s total destrucción and annihilation. Wing chun has it’s place and time within the different ranges of fighting and must be compensated with the use of other tools and attributes from other forms of combat. Like the gentleman said, “ use bits and pieces like in building a puzzle until you get a total picture “. All in all, I love your page. Can you put something out on, Sifu Duncan Leung’s applied WC ? Thanks for your hard work and enlightening all the warriors out there, it’s much appreciated ! Lol 😀👊🏼🙏🏼
Thank you again for your returning to your martial arts roots and coming back with a growing mindset rather than an apathy. Sir, could you review real fighters that are using WC concepts in real world fight like Tony Ferguson, Anderson Silva etc. more specifically are what the methods they are doing legitimate WC training concepts or just they’re so excellent at fighting they can make unorthodox stuff like WC and it just happens to look like something like WC? Thank you for your work again 🙏
'....I don't wanna leave your face paused like that' -bwaaaaaahahahaha...you gotta be one of the most considerate mrfrs up on this platform! Lmao like seriously man, that's just both funny and mad cool af, though! Dom....cheers to ya, best wishes for a Merry Christmas, good health and safety. -Dom G.
My favourite video yet, and I agree with most of the other guys points. Keep it practical. I came from that "Chi Sao" culture years ago, and it's not the end game. Just part of the learning process
Thanks for this very informative video. Can you do a review on Lawrence Kenshin's video, "Why Wing Chun gets destroyed?" Especially on his critiques that Wing Chun punches lack power and the stance damages the natural structure of the legs preventing them from moving effectively.
Honestly, Kenshin was spot on. It's just basic physics. Plus, that position, tucking your buttcheeks in, with your knees on the inside..isn't going to get you anywhere.
So true about keeping moving forward. That is what is done in a real fight not a tournament or sparring match. It's ment to go forward and take out your opponent until he can't go anymore
I watched his video first, now watching this. He was spot on with a lot of what he said and I guarantee people decided to crap on what he said withough watching through to the end of the video. I put your vid on 2x speed so I can get through all of this. I'm sure you have plenty to counter but just as much to support some of what he said.
I can agree with a lot of the criticisms of wing Chun they are all valuable. Coming from a judo background transfer into wing Chun and using wing Chun concepts with my judo makes my judo so much better
That is a great combo. Very effective for a good self defense preparation because you are comfortable fighting standing straight even BEFORE the attack happens.
Wing Chun already has throwing in it, its just not taught. Japanese Jujitsu and Judo actually come from "Shuai Jiao", chinese wrestling, which is MUCH more brutal and deeper than Judo, And is the oldest kung fu style known, nearly every style of kung fu contains "Shuai Jiao" throws and joint locks.
@Izzo Wing Chun. Dom. You are killing me with the "no finger jabs". Everytime I see you doing chi sao or light sparring I see glimpses of Daniel Cormier. Your lead hand strike to one arm clinch is surgical just like DC. DC has also mastered the finger jab (see the Miocic fight) all you gotta do is leave your hand open fam. I gotta get out to see you sometime. We live too close to never have met. Where you practice these days?
Finally I hear something real. Been practicing WT for over 20+been in combat zones from Iraq to Afghanistan. Have been in real fights from bars in Texas to Thailand. WC/WT works. Never have I ever feel the need to way in on anything and this may first comment ever. Train six month in WT or six week and your able to defend yourself from able 90% of what would happen in the street. Credit goes to my first Sifu in Austin Tx Mr.R. Guerra. He would teach and train in the manner that you described using it simple, and from that approach, I have been able to defend myself different situations from all over the world. Thank you for this contact. It may be late, but I do agree with all the points that you’ve made.
Knowledge and honesty about WC. Can't ask for more. I am not a WC practitioner because the style I could have trained, although coming from a very effective fighter (mentioned as such in this video), is taught in a way that make it very expensive to learn. Nonetheless it's a quite interesting style/concept or philosophy of fighting. This video went flying, a pleasure to watch.
Izzo ...I love ur no no You're no nonsense approach to Wing Chun you cut through all the esoteric b******* keep it short and sweet and strong excellent thank you
My Sifu always gave good advice he said the essence of wing chun was to hit and keep hitting . . . i do not employ blocks of any kind im glad to see that what I do is reiterated here . the only thing i would add here is i always bridge the gap using an oblique kick taking out the kneecap as I move into range it gives them something else to think about feint low go high . . . feint high go low always attack on more than one front . . . works for me
So people understand . Pak sao = rear parry. Bong Sao = block. Tan sao= parry. Huen sao = circular parry. In the first form there is the collar tie. In the last form the close of the hand in huen sao is lapel chokes. The turning in the second form think inside and outside pivots. Proper footwork in the second form. Etc. Do I have it right sifu?
This is kinda crazy for me. I saw a couple of your videos years ago, and I thought they were kind of interesting, but I never subscribed. But then just now, I stumbled onto his channel, and saw a more recent video of his that talked about you providing a great rebuttal to his Wing Chun video. I had to go back and watch his original WC video, then come here. Now I'm subscribed to both channels. Maybe someday I'll get off my butt and go try martial arts.
If you're a black belt in BJJ who can't deal with strikes on the ground, then you didn't learn the old BJJ. That shit is what Royce used in the original UFC and sport BJJ threw it to the wayside.
Actually Meadows has a student that was a Navy SEAL that applied for the first UFC against Gracie, they had him send in a 3 minute training video and he responded that he couldn't fight.
17:25 yeah this, all day this... I'm too old now to wrestle and kickbox and I'm only 40. Screw that been there done that got the medals. Now I'm older and wiser so I'm either running or stabbing and wing chun is for cqc.
@Aiden Fisher I hope you're not serious 🤣🤣. Show me the man who is stronger when he's older and you'll show me a man who was frail in his youth. One lesson my teacher and father drilled into me is that "the best defense is not a good offense it's to not be there to be hit." "Good, Bad, I'm the guy with the gun." - Ash Williams
@Aiden Fisher go to the gym AND workout?? I'm glad you said that I was really wondering what I should do when I get there. Okay go to the gym check. Stop feeling sorry for myself no problem cuz I'm great and doggone it people like me. Set goals & achieve them. I'm working on that I guess writing this counts. I don't think I'm fooling anyone it says I'm 40 on my state issued ID. I'm pretty sure I'm not fooling anyone, but maybe I can get some poor soul to card me. Go away and grow up? Well I'm 40, but I guess I still have some growing to do. Thanks for the tips maybe with these I can grow up to be just like you.
12:29 seconds In )=depending on how you( palm striked )it either giving them basically whiplash to neck depending on literally check mate or you get hurt because your in a ring because you seriously don't want to end they carrier in one match .see that why it can be hated n love at same time basically yin yang
Again as stated in other videos, it more about who studies a particular system and how it's curriculum is taught and learned, and then later applied; that often leads people to try to loosely determine how good or bad a system is, and often they make such a judgement without ever having trained in the system that they are passing judgement on. Nowadays, such people are as easily influenced by others opinions of such on social media as they are with people opinions of whether or not a movie is worth seeing.
Sparring serves as the necessary live practice of technique and strategy for the average person, these are usually not ppl who were wrestlers/cops/bouncers/etc. You may not spar now (or may not spar often?) but the tactile experience of actually executing martial arts techniques and strategies still happened for you. Sparring also doesn't just happen at a single intensity. People tend to spar light most of time to alleviate the potential for injuries. It's common to spar much harder on a semi regular basis. But all that isn't even a rule, I've heard of schools/gyms that don't spar at all or that spar hard all the time on a regular basis.
The wing chun doesn't work is always bull shit, it's the individual that's at fault, Izzo you're completely right with you're comments about wing chun sparring!
If you really believe that .... continue your wing Chun but don't be surprised if one day a guy with six months of Muay Thai training, puts you on the ground quickly......
Oh- you mentiones something I need to ASK you about. My experience in violence--(and a LOT of it- ) was military, and as fed bodyguard and in tactical security/anit-terrorist work--BUT- I'm RETIRED, and haven't practiced in many years (since I got mashed in between two trucks in 99)... and I DO NOT do bars --EVER, and I an RARELY out at all-- so I want something I can do effectively- and training is going to be HARD for me physically for a long tme.. I'm looking at ICE urban combat (online at home- since I have the experience, I think I can make that work well) and CANE-DO whcih I WILL do (cane is legal anywhere and I need one often for mobility due to the injures) and it's VERY effective... ANY SUGGESTIONS??? I VALUE your opinion because I LOVE Wing Chun-- and I Appreciate your HONESTY!!!
As an ex-Wing Chun practitioner what I really would like to see is a fairly hard sparring session between a Wing Chunner and a boxer… any good videos somewhere you can point towards? (Not just the typical couple of guys who have been practicing their respective disciplines for a week only)
This is why I want to learn Wing Chun Izzo . It will help me for entry . I am a practioner of Iron Fist and Iron Palm. I took Wing Chun about 3 weeks but couldn't remember anything due to one class a week . I tried to learn on my own but I believed I was doing something's wrong and I'm a believer learn something with bad habits then it would be harder to remove the bad habits then learning green horn .
In my personal opinion as an mma guy with no tma or WC experience wing chin and kung fu should never be someone’s first martial art because a lot of times the training and “mentality” is not good for fighting please keep in mind I’m not attacking tma and would love to train it it’s just there’s not a single real dojo in my area pls correct me if I’m wrong
39:20 Dom you way "this is sparring!", but no, no it's not. As always in WC, you're not hitting, you're not following through with your strikes. You can only do that with hands and head gear, which would allow you to actually hit and follow through. You're not hitting here, there is no force to the strikes, ergo, this is not sparring. This is a big problem with WC: you basically study for years and years how NOT to hit your opponent, and how not to be hit. That is not sparring. Sparring means applying real pressure and dynamics.
Thanks for the comment David. Didn't see you displaying any skill of your own on your channel. Let us know when you put content out to back up your critiques. All the best.
@@IzzoWingChun Thanks for replying, Dom. We can all appreciate healthy disagreement, if the discourse remains civil. The point is not me, let's get this out of the way: a 12 year old could probably beat me up, I'm an overweight old fart. This said, you know exactly what I mean. I've practised WC (both Leung Ting and some other "lineage"), so I can appreciate some of your takes. Others, not so much. You know that was not sparring. That was some form of very light fencing at most. Without needing to see me beat up by a 12 year old, you can just google "sparring". But no need even for that, you know exactly what sparring is, c'mon. If you don't hit or get hit, with intention, it's not sparring, simple as that.
Chi Sau from a static position teachs.response and feel to an opponent that involves being hit and hitting. These are set drills to ensure correct technique is learned and applied should roll into.afreestyle sparring .
Hi Dom, Super great video. I saw this literally yesterday, and was in the middle of writing a long, thoughtful concurring response to Inside Fighting before scrapping it because the page refreshed itself. Lessons learned to draft a lengthy response on notepad before dropping it to the comments section. As a member of the audience, I fully appreciate watching Inside Fighting's video, and your response/rebuttals make complete sense from a wing chun standpoint. Anyway, I love your analysis and I wish there are more productive, respectful dialogue between non-wing chun practitioners and wing chun practitioners that can explore the strength and limitations of the style while leaving out the egos and dogmas at the entrance. This actually really resonates with your video about the dogmatic adherence to Ip Man's final video footage -- the cultish and rigid wing chun community mindset really hurts the disseminiation and learning of actual wing chun concepts and principles, and it is completely fair for the world to call out wing chun on its bullshit practitioners. PS: I watch your wing chun content on a regular basis since 2013, and in my opinion, your approach to wing chun is thoughtful, and works for smaller guys in the US (I myself am a 5 foot 9, 195 lbs dude) and I can say from personal experience that your teachings work in pressure testing situations that I have been in against larger opponents. PPS: By the way, you should start consider trademarking FANTASY FU(TM), and create a separate sub-channel/content where you specifically comment (for entertainment purposes) any video footages that can be considered FANTASY FU(TM). I'm IP counsel by day (and wing chun enthusiast) so if you're considering it, DM me and we can catch up by email or something.
I do wing chun-- some- adn LOVE it-- I have MATRIXED it--- I remove the repetitive stuff, keep what is fitting to the body mechnics and THAT has been VERY effective for me. NOW_ I'm 67 , retired- and got mashed between 2 trucks in 99 (and STILL not over that) and I haven't practiced in that time-- so my skills are pretty much GONE-- even my memory of most of it is GONE. I'm going back tino CANE-DO (whioh I started during Ranger School in my hapkido training) and adding a LOT to that with CANE MASTERS and ACSD...and loving that.. and with sobrevivencia it's even DESIGNED for close quarter combat... I LOVED Wing chun- that much I remember-- and I'm thinking of working with ICE (Brad and Jarrod in cA- online- that you reviewed and approved of). YOUR opinion is IMPORTANT to me in making decisions-- because you are HONEST wtih it-- TRUTHFUL to what WORKS- HOW it works, etc.....
This is key for all of us doing traditional arts.. you do have to be somewhat aggressive. You need to get that reference point to know where the guy is and what he is throwing. If you reset just as you said, you end up getting picked apart. Because of this though, you also need some grappling experience.
🤪Wing Chun was a developed to kick the sh!$ out of some one and run away. Not last multiple rounds. In other words it was developed by a woman that if you grabbed her you would wish you hadn't. 🙄What? Does everyone think MMA just popped up overnight. Here's some homework for you guys. UFCs 1 through 10. That is where everybody starts learning that you must learn multiple martial arts in order to win. Or you better be a badass natural striker /kicker. Even Bruce Lee says you should learn multiple martial arts in Tao of Jeet Kune Do. Limit yourself and you limit your range. ✨🤘✨ Great video and great representation of Wing Chun brother. ✨👊😎♥️✨
Roberto stayed at that range boxers I no many boxers that love the pocket I'm one of them and I hate moving backward I guess because I like that range it's just so much control there.
Lot of good commentary..BIG respect goes out to your guest ...I have one question..Izzo often says you have to be willing to take a hit. In my opinion that may be fine if you and your opponent are of equal size and weight..but as shown in your sparring session...a 6'4" opponent packs more power than someone your size...you may not survive that punch if it lands on the nose in the eye, or temple..thats why they have weight classes in boxing...this is where I believe creating angles are very important ..for all the bad press William Cheungs system gets ..and I'm sure plenty of it is valid..this is the only Wing Chun lineage I've seen that focuses on creating angles with footwork and moving forward (centerline vs central line) I did not see that in your 2 sparring session..it was mostly straight forward which was effective agaisnt opponent your size..but you got clipped a few times with the 6'4" guy going straight forward..in a real fight I would imagine his power and size, and if he was punching closed fist and not open hand with full force with ill inent..the outcome wold not be in your favor
Wing Chun is not that different than other martial arts.. it has its own blocks and strikes and kicks . It always comes down to the fighter no matter what style you do, if you duck it doesn’t matter what style you jump on.
Well from all his experience, Ilan talks from common sense.. but then He has never trained Wing Chun or fought a decent Wing Chun man.. some of his points are way off..Im glad that Dominick chose this video to breakdown and to discuss.. so this tends to be the general attitude of Sport MMA peeps against Wing Chun.. and I am glad... all the MORE Wing Chun for us who know what it is and how it works.
Super weird nit, and maybe it was just a stream of consciousness where you were trying to get a larger point across (hence why it's just a nit) At 31:15 you comment "So for me, because it was based off of core principles, you'll never see me pak sau or bong sau in a fight because you can't" -- I might agree with a bong sau (as intended, not as a 'block' like too many abuse the movement), but Pak Sau is just a parry which is certainly useful in a fight. Is the pak sau not something you can see yourself using in a fight? Since you said it a second time, at 45:10 so I'm guessing it's intentional so I'm curious how I'm misunderstanding the use of a pak sao. If an opponent tries to use a jab to get their range, that's often a great opportunity to use their jab as a runway for your forward entry using the pak sao as a parry and guiding your entry and strike, and how I use the pak sao.
In my lineage.. we collect. We use TAN FOOK BONG QUAN TOK GAANG QUAN JUM HUEN PAK JUT PAI SAO KOP JARN PAI JARN CHEUNG CHOY PING CHOY JA JEUNG CHAANG JEUNG DAI JEUNG GAU CHOY GUA CHOY LOP SAO CHIT SAO CHIN SAO “We collect using SAM TZE” meaning the front MAN SAO hand we isolate and use 4 actions to his one. We use all of it.
I think where people get wing chun screwed up is. They don’t understand that the YUT GEE is our primary tool. Deflecting happens half way back? We never enter using a BONG SAO. People should know that if they really train the art? Also.. Bong is a transitional movement. Not a square block. Our most precious weapons in my jkd are BUI GEE CHEUNG CHOY GINGER FIST AND and QUAN SAO. We use a lot of HUEN SAO and GAANG QUAN . It’s a snake crane type of JEET landing the most powerful weapon possible, and hit as hard as possible.
The problem with the guy's video is that he's criticizing the worst possible caricature of Wing Chun. Its like judging Muay Thai by all the aerobics kickboxing gyms.
Except that by that standard there are amazing examples of Muay Thai guys in street fights, rings, against other styles etc… to show the best of it… dating back many decades and still today… You don’t see that with wing chun.
Good forward energy...BUT... leaning ALOT. You made a tripod with your 2 feet (the base) and leaning hard on your opponent (the top part of the triangle). One hard lop or double jut whilst moving off the line would have you have you falling forward BADLY
Best wc video ever. Like the interviewee I have had 2 decades plus in BJJ, 8 years competitive wrestling, 5 years boxing and 3 Muay Thai but before JJ and ring sport's I was a wrestler wing chun guy. Now I can use it. Couldn't agree more about arrogance of many JJ guys. The training is what makes you tough and one on one it's great. But situations where you have a real problem it's got holes . However, when arts like sambo which was leg locks and now it's everything necessary for MMA bullshit. No art is complete. When I trainedcwith Carlson Gracie sr. It was flank centerline change levels and bridge gap by covering up with elbowschigh and arm wrapped around forehead like as rhink planting the elbow inThe sternum with one arm hanging like a elephant trunk to avoid the knees, double leg, body lock, do you blast into opponent and now I can body lock, blast double, throw, oaoto gari , anything it's flexible . You can take the guy down and pass the guard but the guy will give up his back if your elbow makes contact and if you train with a pad holder to learn to blast through aggressively you will rattle the guy and you can take him down and do down or simply beat him up. 3-10 seconds of you have judo and or wrestling it's easy. Wc must be trained often because second nature requires a long time. In wing chun you can do explosive drills and toughen your limbs big time . I know Augustine Fong thru Ed but I don't train at windy city. I used to train T the same place as Ed under Tony Kariotis who trained some tough people because he was not a natural athlete but tried wrestling, boxing, Judo, Karate and when.Wing chun answered his questions he focused more on forward aggression. Chi sao was big but Fong and Ed, Ken, really knew chi Sau and were more technical than our after 8 to 9 years and teach Fong style. Our original sifu learned from Swift who trained Neering . Swift trained with yip ching and occasionally Wong shun leung. This is my recollection and I never met any guys other than swift and Neering from JJ. I actually went to see Jethro Tull with him and one of his bodies and one I'd the first American Carlson Gracie Black belts. Back in 2002 a American Black Belt under Gracie in America was rare and BJJ schools were much more prevalent in Florida and California. Carlson Jr and Sr were only Gracies in Chicago. Totally different than Helio's style that focused more on guard based on the different statutes between Carlson and Helio . When I first saw Wing Chun it was a brutal style by my estimation although admittedly the takedown neutralized it if you could survive the onslaught which in a bar would be unlikely with a skill wc man.😂
Now I think Wing Chun will work against other relatively complete fighters. Although you either are going to end it quick based on range where it starts or use some boxing or clinching to get WC going
The issue with BJJ also is that some schools don’t focus on the self defense aspect of it and focus more on the competition aspect. The schools that teach the self defense aspect are truer to the art in my eyes. Just my opinion
Thank you, Dom for bringing these realities to the Wing Chun world. There seems to be a two-fold problem: from the non-WC perspective, until people get over the MMA as the ultimate 'test' of an art's efficiency, then they will never see what WC is meant to be; from the Wing Chun world: you have 90% of the teachers bogging students down in endless 'technique-based' mentality, and producing nothing but a bunch of little 'Donnie Yins'. Plus the distraction that so-called JKD has created. It's a wonder that this art has survived; but then again, those that know the ugly reality of what Wing Chun is for are out there, and if never engaged in a true self defense scenario, it will be a never-seen ace in the hole....it's quick, it's ugly, and it's about taking someone out...period, end of story. I'm grateful that people like you, Justin Och, Tony Massengill, and a lot of others (especially the European guys like Boztepe, Brand, etc.) are keeping it real. As to the acceptance of Wing Chun in the Martial Arts 'community', we might just have to live with the scorn and criticism....frankly, my Wing Chun is just like having a Glock in my waistband, and you ain't gonna see it unless you fuck with me. Keep on keeping it real!
Actually wing chun is engineered to fight other styles and is actually suppose to be bad at fighting itself... so yeah something is seriously wrong if your wing chun is only effective against other wing chunners.
@Aiden Fisher I know there has always been rivalry between Choy Li Fut and Wing Chun, since CLF uses long fist while WC suppose to be short fist. I don't know how they do it in HK but the WC that I've seen often is long fist... WC as I mentioned is *designed* against other styles because most other styles are long fist. Just because people aren't using it right doesn't take away the fact that WC was designed to be against other styles.
I am laughing rolling on the floor now Sifu izzu, I never heard so many swearing in one wingchun session(I don’t care if it’s debate or commentate or instruct it’s all about wing chun and other fighting style so it is a wing chun session ok lol now I sound like u lol) , that so funny mate, Sifu izzu: fk ur legs and arms , fk ur ciiisow ….. lololol
You're right MOVIES have a lot do do about RUINING martial arts.. NOT realizing movies are BS... and all the IP man crap- and the Perfect Weapon, SEGAL with his aikido (correctly called TENSHIN Aikido) and more.... and we DO get the wrong idea and many times FAIL to get real... THANKS for being HONEST in all your vids.. that MEANS A LOT.
@nicholasgreen339 YES-- I've trained some with some monks- and you're right- there is NO comparison... they wil say " We do slow" and you STILL can't see them move... :)
So many great points in the video I never considered. Now I'm starting to wonder if Classical Wing Chun is very handicapped by not training against other styles with a significant amount of resistance and intention. What can bridge this gap? Sure, they do great against other "'Chunners" but that's simply not good enough in today's hybrid fighting style world and violent street milieu. What can bridge the gap between Classical (say, Leung Shung/Wong Shun Leung) style Wing Chun which has so much going for it and the realities of the street? Is it possible to do so and still call yourself Wing Chun? Perhaps the way you train and the way your fight are different once it starts going. Seems so many fights end up looking the same when, as Izzo says, your ego and adrenaline kick in. Seems Izzo is going for answers. Let's see what else he can come up with so we can all learn.
Sparring suckz, especially if the agreement is not adhered to. Then it becomes a fight. Sparring is a game, play nice don't kill your training partner. Each martial art is a foreign language to a person and they need to translate it. As an FMA practitioner and a student of redboat, boxer and judo practitioner (albeit of 20 years ago for the judo, lol) I was asked to show a knife disarm. So I attacked the guy who had the training knife, pulled my knee kick to a tap, and taped his forehead for they eyejab before he was able to bring the knife into play. The group said but you didn't take the knife. - I didn't need to. Now the fellow I was training with was a karate guy, and the group said do it again, my ego got the better of me and I got stabbed in the back because we were grappling. My ego would have killed me in a real altercation. My point is this, I knew my initial entry was on point. No 2nd chance, it aint a sport, but in that instance my ego got the better of me. Mind you being humbled is better than being killed. This is a good discussion folks, I follow both of you folks. Keep it up.
Yeah agree must go in cos regarless of anything if your moving forward ,9 times out of ten the opponant ends up moving backwards to maintain that gap but that has 1 major effect ,,,it reduces your opponats power in his punches just because he is moving backwards ,,,,but most of the fights i've had have started and ended in 3 ways ,,double bone attacking slapping pak to each of the opponants weapons ( iron palm energy used her) then a tiger kick to the top of the thigh ,splitting the muscle into the bone ,,that ends the fight there n then cos they cant walk anymore ,,2: same double pak (remember your attacking before the oponant even gets his hands up all the way to fight ) moving in to take their space with a cutting elbow going right through the head ,,fight ends,,, 3rd same double pak moving in with a fax to between the nose n teeth now at this point your other hand will want to go in for a palm but same as if you go to palm only turn it towads the elbow and cow sou the ,full body cow sou core twist ,kidney punch at the same time ,,give him 2 of those then then punch up between the arms to an uppercut ,if he's still there one more elbow should put that Princess to sleep ,move through them ,try this one ,,double pak to trap while takeing their space and drop into a hip n shoulder ,GET LOW AND COME UP AND IN ON AN UPWARD ANGLE UNDER THE STERNUM ,I PROMISE YOU THAT WILL SEND THE OPPONANT FLYING 15 FEET THROUGH THE AIR ,I GUARENTEE IT !
Hey so you mentioned that you’re 5’7” and weigh 220lb. I’m not 100% sure if you have but you should definitely consider BJJ. The reason being is that it was created for the weaker person. Hello Gracie was very weak and Ill and he was very effective on it. I would recommend learning on the history of BJJ and how it was created if you haven’t already.
@@IzzoWingChun then you should definitely consider BJJ. Even those who are strong are made weak against it. Once you learned the proper self defense techniques you become almost unstoppable. It humbles the fuck out of you as well. Also wrestling and bjj are two different things. Especially with a gi. And when you’re speaking about wearing coats in Chicago then that’s perfect for your environment. But again you would want to go to school that focuses on the self defense aspect. Usually from the Helio Gracie side of the family. Carlos Gracie side seems to follow more of the sport/competition side of things which is what the guy in the video was talking about “berimbalos”(upside down techniques). My Professor always mentions if you do that shit in the street I’m stomping on your fugging head.
Its not pressure tested like boxing, etc. can get in ring with a Pro Boxer and sparring with head and gloves. There is lots of Wing Chun fighter who fought in a real fight lost. Its fun to look at. JKD incorporated boxing. I would used the eagle claw chun fu for bicep grap, kick in the balls, with guided chaos.
Hey Izzo, at minute 40 you are showing yourself doing 'sparring'!? Sorry, but that is not sparring. What you are showing is free applications. If you do sparring, even in WingChun you put on some pads and go medium full contact. The aggressor does any attack from any stile, and the defender does WingChun. The role of aggressor and defender switches with every attack. And in the end maybe it ends with a shorter period of hard full contact. Just then we get to learn to deal with really going for it.
selam. wanna share sth that i almost couldn't believe myself. "be like water..." , those words are not bruce lee's words. that passage was written by a white guy. guess that was the way this guy imagined how oriental wisdom would sound. bruce just repeated the lines he once read in his capacity as an actor. i was confused, too. thinking about it still helped me making sense of some things in the end. cause let's be honest, the intercepting fist should be able to flow whenever it is needed, but to finish a fight as fast as possible we will have to be less soft finally
This happens with a lot of traditional martial arts, getting bad mouthed by MMA fanatics, when only looking at an art in a specific context of utilization, of what they see in a demo or educational seminar. Case in point, a traditional Korean martial art like Kuk Sool Won, gets bad mouthed by MMA fanatics as being ineffective in sport, just because it's listed as a traditional martial art, but in the early days of modern MMA, a 4th degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won by the name of Gary Goodridge, competed, took the guy to the ground in a type of lock known as the "Crucifex" and then proceeded to knock his opponent out with multiple elbow strikes to the face. That being said, Gary Goodridge was an excellent fighter and went on to do well in combat sport competitions, so back to what was said in the earlier video, he would have done well possibly regardless of which style that he represented or studied. It's simply that certain Korean arts like Hapkidõ, Kuk Sool Won, or Hwa Rang Do; are a bit more comprehensive in their curriculum and thus allows more exposure to various combative elements, versus other Korean arts like Taekwondõ or Tang Soo Dõ.
I am not an MMA fanatic tbh and have an extensive background in traditional martial arts as well as combat sports. I find both valuable. I just stated what i observed but i am by no means a wing chun expert but love all martial arts and figured it would be fun to give my perspective. My experience with wing chun is mostly from Guro Dan Inosanto and Francis Fong. I also had a training partner growing up who did wing chun for many years and was very comitted to it. Everyone has an opinion in arts they don't train based on what they observe... not just mma fanatics... i hear it from TMA guys all the time. I like the response in the video a lot and would train with Mr. Izzo and try and pick up what he knows and apply it to what i do. I'm quite open minded when it comes to martial arts because i just enjoy training.
This argument that 'it's not the style it's the fighter' is so bogus. If that's true, why even bother training at all if it's always going to be the fighter? This is like saying a sword and a gun are equal weapons because it depends on the fighter. But it's wrong. One is clearly superior to another and it's the same story with styles.
Joe Rogan constantly states to train in arts that are used by trained killers and thinks wing Chun is a joke . If him and Bas and a host of others agree with him , then milllions listening to the podcast will think this way
alot of people say stuff ,its all a million ways to get to the same place ,the body can only move in so many ways ,having said that Mike Tyson ,not many would want to face that monster huh but if you check out his fights and really check it out closely you'll see he uses chi sou ,you'll see him on the inside doing chi sou ,he'll be on one side then the other side ,you'll see him sticking in order to stay on the inside and just goes to show you again its interpritation ,and lets not forget what is wing chun ,,its chinese boxing .
bill jee doez work but stop thinking of it as thrusting fingers n hurting your fingers ,the best way to blind your opponant is not to poke his eues out wth thrusting fingers ,think of it more like a whip ,double pak both hands and youl find if you got the speed then youll have the flow and if you got that your after the pakthe fingers are pointing behind you still on the inside and in the perfect spot for whip movement with the finger nails and its only the nails tjat cit accross the eye ball ,much much quicker ,like blistering speed ,and no matter what theyll be blind for long enough for you to destroy them
You say that is what wing chun sparring is or would be and you hate it. But why not spar in a way that you want where you don't stop to reset? Where mma gloves or something similar for safety purposes would be good to not get hurt like you did. I'm just curious what your thoughts are.
Interesting to see how big corporate money shields certain other similar TMAs to WC from equally applicable criticisms. Unrealistic training no meaningful strikes to the head, bogus grappling, no body mechanics other than get as big and muscular as you can and fight smaller guys, which just becomes glorified bodybuilding.
Ok, I am just a 1/4 into this video and would like to say! In a real life fight like being attacked its better to have the feel of the attack and know which tool to use is more important than knowing just one style. I can take a karate move like a chop or punch to the throat then use a bong sao to deflect to a chain punch. This all depends on the situation and feel of the fight. BTW I practiced 11 systems for about 5yrs and Wing Chun was one of the systems. This guy is spot on and I love the singing in the begining of his video. LMFAO
The thing I don't get is why if even Bruce Lee, our beloved martial arts icon who studied with Yip Man himself, wanted to move beyond WC because he considered it too old, static, dogmatic, why are all WC practitioners so hellbent on defending the dogma? Even he evolved into something more dynamic, more "realistic" in a way. Why do all of you keep wanting WC to be something it isn't? I've practiced WC, and it's an amazing meditative experience, a sublime exercise in balance, for the body and the mind. It's also super cool to behold, at that. But it just isn't a highly effective dynamic fighting technique. It just isn't. A mid boxer or thai fighter will probably shut your lights out. The only WC principle that has any value is to keep forward pressure. But one can just apply that principle with more effective techniques, such as boxing and the lot. The zealot mentality is just baffling.
Who cares what Bruce said/did? He was an actor. Did he have martial abilities? Yes. However, he is not known for being a professional fighter, or even a street fighter. Most of the claims about his prowess are myth. The zealotry for the cult of Bruce Lee rivals that of the WC camp.
It's subjective to how WC is taught and used in question. If it's being taught in a reality setting then realistically one should just go for the most direct route possible to reach the target...job done that's it. With great regret we have a deluded community filled with crap teachers and students that have watched too many films, it's created a fragmented syllabus and it has molded the art into a priesthood of sorts. "Fall in line or go elsewhere". Until teachers and students alike wake up i cant see wc seeing any widespread credibility in the widespread ma community. Its depressing but ultimately it is what it is.
Any martial art is only as good as the practitioner. From the outside looking in you never know if you don't try it so judgement should be from experience over time not just at a glance.
I get it concerning the BJJ and GRACIE-- I do understand the need for all that--- BUT-- as I tell you in other comments- I got mashed between two trucks in 99 and am STILL not over that yet-- so going to the ground would be the END of me. I need something for STREET- in reality with 99% STANDING UP... period. I do know that the "majority of fights go to the ground" BULLSHIT comes from stats by cops - but they HAVE to go to the ground a lot for CONTROL-- I don't NEED to "control ' anyone and don't care if I put them out PERMANENTLY -if-- I F they are trying to kill me.
Alright so I like this video also but even with all the good info here, there are several points being missed. Sorry this is so long winded. Let’s first talk about sparring or MMA fighting in regards to how things start off. You have one guy on one side of the ring & you have another guy on the other, “let’s get it on” is called & both parties start out coming toward each other in their fighting stance. This is not how fights start in the real world & unless you’re training for sport fighting, you should not train this way. In the real world, fights can start a number of different ways but they generally happen at very close range which is extremely advantages to a proficient Wing Chun fighter. Emotions are at a pitch, tunnel vision happens, etc.. In Wing Chun, as Izzo has said many times, it’s all about the punch. It is the “Jeet Kune” in Jeet Kune Do. In other words, the very split second that you know that you are not getting out of the situation without engaging in the fight, you need to intercept their thoughts & their actions with a punch. If you’ve ever been in a fight then you know that feeling you get when a fight hasn’t actually happened but it’s inevitable. That is the time to throw the first punch. You literally intercept their thoughts & their movement with it. That one concept should be drilled over & over again until it sticks because it is the life saver of the fight. If you do not intercept at this stage, there is another stage but it can not be relied upon because each person is different. If a fight is about to start & someone takes a stance, that’s when you go in, the moment they transition to a stance & before they are actually ready. Again, you Jeet Kune or intercept their actions & thoughts with a strike. Now there’s something else I want to say which I do not see people doing in Wing Chun but you are supposed to do which is GET OFF LINE. Let’s take the first scenario & you intercept the fight when you know it is inevitable but has not started. DO NOT GO STRAIGHT FORWARD FIRST. Step to your 2 or 10 O’clock & face them with both weapons so that you have two arms & a leg against their 1 arm & a leg. They are now in a precarious position which is difficult to recovery from if you immediately put pressure against them. This also give you time to use techniques like Pak Sao, Bong Sao, & the rest because now you have limited the directions that attacks can come from & they will be slower. You must fight smart & this is one of the kuen kuit of Wing Chun, “Strike any presented posture if it is there, otherwise strike when you see motion. Beware of sneak attacks & invisible center line attacks”, “Pass by your opponents incoming arm bridge from above. Jam the opponents bridge to restrict his movement”, “Create a bridge if the opponents bridge is not present; nullify the bridge according to how it is presented”, & “Do not collide with a strong opponent; with a weak opponent use a direct frontal assault”. All of this is telling you to take advantage of every single weakness the opponent gives you including how they stand. You do not go straight in on an opponent who has a stance & is a proficient fighter because he will just move & attack you. Instead you go forward but at an angle & face the opponent before making the attack so that he cannot bring his weapons to bear. You cannot wait either because EVERYTHING in Wing Chun is Faan Sao. You must practice ALL of this to have real Wing Chun because they are the fighting concepts of the style. You however must have enough practice & experience to know when to apply certain concepts. That is all & I will now step down off of my soap box.
the dude that hit you was cocky ,i could se it in him and im just watching a vid ,,the trick to fighting a larger person is a few things ,1st learn to be able to pakk off hits at the lattest possible moment ,ie:let the punch get as close to your chin as you can before paking it off ,the closer you can let them get the easier to get to the body ,,,he is a mountain ! you will never move him and his strikes will feel like the weights of large trees ,,,the trick here is to be the countre fighter you are ,wait for the mountain to move 1st (best tecks would be lifting bong to elbow for the ribbs ,,cow sou the elbow for body shots ,,,a big man has alot of weight ,all that weight will hurt him if he hits the floor from waist level ,,wait for him to move and just after he changes his centre of gravity to land on his forward step ,,you take that foot out at the angkle just a millisecond before it makes contact with the ground ,,down he will go ,,thats even more powerful id you use hand and foot rather than just foot
Under every stress tests, these novice lost to a Kombatant schooled into Ishin RYU Karate. Answer easy, the simple to complex motor skill is BRIDGED. Not so if you jump into KalKi Aiki Kai kaka-do.😅😅😅
yes their is alot of bullshit but not all wing chun is created equal ,,,in my school we teach the Australian S.A.S close quater combat ,we have doctors ,surgins ,lawyers ,these are extreamly smart people who have remained with the school through their entire carreers ,this would not happen if what Sifu/Sigung taught he couldn't do himself ,,one of Sigungs students (a Sifu himself) is the Australian S.A.S patrol commander Richard Hungerford ,this person is a machine ,an absolute terminator and it was my Sigung/Sifu that created this mad killing machine as he has done with many others including myself

Are you police officer??????
Goju Ryu Karate???? Is That The Style.
Hello Sifu Izzo, I’m Andy, a fellow WC practitioner for about 15 years now (Leung Ting lineage), I enjoy the content, just wanted to ask you how many years you had the honor of training with Grandmaster Ip Ching (RIP) for? I’ve
only seen him in videos but it must have been an amazing experience to chi sao with someone like that.
@@AndyGuey1231 I never trained with him. But I am under his lineage through Sam Kwok.
This was really great! Many thanks! :)
Your old videos are awesome love it. Straight forward 💥👊🏻
I love your content but a better description would be forward energy . Basic wing tung concepts . One of your best vids . 👍
*Wing chun/ sorry stupid type o from my phone.
Thank you
Thank you for this video
You can say I'm one of the Wing Chun "haters", but I dig your content. Subbed!
Greatly appreciate that.
@@Ed7501 WC people are pretty shitty all around. As you can tell, I don't make friends here.
@@Ed7501i heard Pak Mei and Wing Chun have similarities and flow well together.
Thank to Sifu it rose to a bigger prominence, what are your opinions about its effectiveness?
What do you think are its most defining elements?
Me too, lol. Like Izzo though
Sparring like anything else in martial arts is a training tool to help teach concepts of the system. Just like forms, self defense patterns, etc. Rarely is anything used as a training tool in class going to occur in real life in the exact way practiced or trained in class.
no, sparring is the closest you can get to fight simulation. If you do not spar hard you can not fight. Period.
You fight like you train.
@@BigMoik Exactly, thank you.
Love these videos! started Wing Chun 6 months ago coming from a kickboxing/MMA background and these videos are pure gold!
Explain then how is it that Wong Shun Leung destroyed every fighter he fought in street style fights fights. He also had incidents with some
So true about keeping moving forward.
That's an interesting combo.
That is a great combo. Very effective for a good self defense preparation because you are comfortable fighting standing straight even BEFORE the attack happens.
From a judo grapple,Wing Chun seems very fitting. You don't need the full power punch of a boxer, like in the old judo atemi.
A fellow judoka/WC guy!!! Waddup dude!
Inside fight is awesome he is a deep wisdom dude. Love this guy
I'd like to see you review mindful wing chun because it is chu shong tin lineage, and I think it would be an interesting contrast.
Just a sergesgon maybe you should look up Rick Spain in Sydney, the best I have ever trained under,in 35 year's
Vote +1
Izzo ...I love ur no no You're no nonsense approach to Wing Chun you cut through all the esoteric b******* keep it short and sweet and strong excellent thank you
My Sifu always gave good advice he said the essence of wing chun was to hit and keep hitting . . . i do not employ blocks of any kind im glad to see that what I do is reiterated here . the only thing i would add here is i always bridge the gap using an oblique kick taking out the kneecap as I move into range it gives them something else to think about
feint low go high . . . feint high go low always attack on more than one front . . . works for me
So people understand .
Appreciate you!
@Aiden Fisher I hope you're not serious 🤣🤣.
Show me the man who is stronger when he's older and you'll show me a man who was frail in his youth.
One lesson my teacher and father drilled into me is that "the best defense is not a good offense it's to not be there to be hit."
"Good, Bad, I'm the guy with the gun." - Ash Williams
@Aiden Fisher I hope I grow up to be just like you.
Maybe one day you can show me how Wing Chun works.
12:29 seconds In )=depending on how you( palm striked )it either giving them basically whiplash
to neck
depending on literally check mate or you get hurt because your in a ring because you seriously don't want to end they carrier in one match .see that why it can be hated n love at same time basically yin yang
U ever heard of light sparring bro?
That's means so that your Sifu when you get hit and run home crying and don't go back doesn't lose money
Chi Sau from a static position teachs.response and feel to an opponent that involves being hit and hitting. These are set drills to ensure correct technique is learned and applied should roll into.afreestyle sparring .
Izzo, I thought Einstein was Disrespected. Boy I was wrong on history.
Hi Dom,
Super great video.
The Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) practitioner that got destroyed in an early UFC event was Asbel Cancio, and I believe he was Moy Yat lineage.
Wing Chun is a martial art not a sport try take. one on no restriction or pussy gloves dare you to
I do wing chun-- some- adn LOVE it-- I have MATRIXED it--- I remove the repetitive stuff, keep what is fitting to the body mechnics and THAT has been VERY effective for me.
Great video and great representation of Wing Chun brother. ✨👊😎♥️✨
Nice!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼☯️🍃
Roberto stayed at that range boxers I no many boxers that love the pocket I'm one of them and I hate moving backward I guess because I like that range it's just so much control there.
Lot of good commentary..BIG respect goes out to your guest ...I have one question..Izzo often says you have to be willing to take a hit. In my opinion that may be fine if you and your opponent are of equal size and weight..but as shown in your sparring session...a 6'4" opponent packs more power than someone your size...you may not survive that punch if it lands on the nose in the eye, or temple..thats why they have weight classes in boxing...this is where I believe creating angles are very important ..for all the bad press William Cheungs system gets ..and I'm sure plenty of it is valid..this is the only Wing Chun lineage I've seen that focuses on creating angles with footwork and moving forward (centerline vs central line) I did not see that in your 2 sparring session..it was mostly straight forward which was effective agaisnt opponent your size..but you got clipped a few times with the 6'4" guy going straight forward..in a real fight I would imagine his power and size, and if he was punching closed fist and not open hand with full force
with ill inent..the outcome wold not be in your favor
I don’t “intend” to use it. If it comes out, it comes out. I don’t open with it. Just strike.
@@IzzoWingChun Okay that makes much more sense and you've repeated it many times. Thanks for the clarification.
The problem with the guy's video is that he's criticizing the worst possible caricature of Wing Chun. Its like judging Muay Thai by all the aerobics kickboxing gyms.
Except that by that standard there are amazing examples of Muay Thai guys in street fights, rings, against other styles etc… to show the best of it… dating back many decades and still today…
You don’t see that with wing chun.
Can we see footage of you sparring? It would be enlightening. 👍
I can’t believe you couldn’t find a kenpo school. It’s everywhere.
Since when is wing chun supposed to be bad against wing chun?
@@gabrielrae7647 When all they wanna do is chi sao all day with each other...
@Aiden Fisher Show me proof of your claim.
@Aiden Fisher Mid-range does give the most options but WC suppose to thrive in clinch range.
It’s a CHoICe to retrofit 15,000 CrossFit expo center into a Renegade Dojango. Way to go you WIN.
Its all about the foot work.
Except I’m STRONG as fuuuuuu. And I’ve been wrestling since I was 12. 😛
My Professor always mentions if you do that shit in the street I’m stomping on your fugging head.
check out Chris Colins' channel. He blends Wing Chun and BJJ (Clark Gracie BB). He's also the Karate guy in Ip Man 4 (not named Scott Adkins).
@@Ed7501 he is one of the absolute BEST
Yeah this is true students only train 1 2 2 times a week and they miss class on top of that
If you had one iota of Psychoatry you are entered the Inversion Zone of a bell curve.
A lot of debate and energy put into a very limited martial art. It’s not fake but is very specialized and limited in its effectiveness
Fken sick cant mate! Soft soft , Sifu izzu: noooo fk uuuuuu!!!!! Lolololollol omg u make my day 👊
Dr. Leung Ting lineage is "Wing Tsun", any other version of writing is not
Hey Izzo, at minute 40 you are showing yourself doing 'sparring'!?
I was with you right up to the “I don’t spar” section.
Good to see Kung fu vs Western Grappling. Defensive Stance training, takedown defense.
If him and Bas and a host of others agree with him , then milllions listening to the podcast will think this way
This turns your Litography into spaghetti. Ishin karate don’t do this. 😅😅😅
alot of people say stuff ,its all a million ways to get to the same place ,the body can only move in so many ways ,having said that Mike Tyson ,not many would want to face that monster huh but if you check out his fights and really check it out closely you'll see he uses chi sou ,you'll see him on the inside doing chi sou ,he'll be on one side then the other side ,you'll see him sticking in order to stay on the inside and just goes to show you again its interpritation ,and lets not forget what is wing chun ,,its chinese boxing .
bill jee doez work but stop thinking of it as thrusting fingers n hurting your fingers ,the best way to blind your opponant is not to poke his eues out wth thrusting fingers ,think of it more like a whip ,double pak both hands and youl find if you got the speed then youll have the flow and if you got that your after the pakthe fingers are pointing behind you still on the inside and in the perfect spot for whip movement with the finger nails and its only the nails tjat cit accross the eye ball ,much much quicker ,like blistering speed ,and no matter what theyll be blind for long enough for you to destroy them
You say that is what wing chun sparring is or would be and you hate it. But why not spar in a way that you want where you don't stop to reset? Where mma gloves or something similar for safety purposes would be good to not get hurt like you did.
I'm just curious what your thoughts are.
E V o L V I n g = MMA continuously
Come on man that’s not sparring…. I mean it’s very very very light sparring at best. Your buddy didn’t even throw a strike…
He split my lip my lip was cut open for week i can taste blood just talking about it lol
Number One who claims Wing Chun doesnt work is Hendrik Santo. Please review his videos.
I hate Wing Chun. But still watch the vids sometimes, for some reason?
