He's an opportunist. Not an innovator
Of course they are an investment, at least not when he first bought them. It's like buying a pet you immensely love and know will need a lot of help, financial and mental support, and you may lose a lot of money doing it. He's in love with basketball and the Mavs were his favourite team. It was an emotional decision. Now they're worth a lot more money but it was a huge punt at the beginning... not even a punt because the purpose of making money off buying them was not on the table, or at least a risk too huge to be entertained logically.

Anyone with that kind of money has balls and loads of confidence to get that much wealth. Almost across the board you see those qualities in billionaires, other than a handful of nerdy techies. With confidence you can rock dirty shoes, goodwill clothes and still come off as worth a million bucks.
