It's a financial thing. Big companies have started to realize that memes attract a large audience, which then equals good revenue. Which in turn have opened up the wider public to memes, which imo has ruined them a little bit. The only memes we can still relish are highly offensive ones, because big companies won't want to advertise those.

I live in the mountains and, for whatever reason, there's been a massive infestation this year. Just insane. I'm not down for killing (they're pretty easy to eliminate) so I just turn off all the lights, grab my headlamp, go outside and act like the moon. Gets most of them out of the house.
