    There are some crazy cool loking deck boxes around the internet, but they're all crazy expensive as well. I may actually try to mae my own. Also it's really satisfying when you accomplish something like that!

    This was actually really neat to watch, and you made it look so easy and accessible to a beginner. I've always admired handmade leather pieces, though I can rarely afford them. There is something distinctive and charming about them. I do a lot of my own sewing and have considered trying to dabble in leather before, but it looked complicated or difficult. It still seems like it takes a fair amount of skill and practice to become competent, but it doesn't feel impossible after watching this.
    A little bit of mood music during the silent parts might be nice, though. I have a really hard time concentrating on just one thing, and it was a struggle to watch those very interesting assembling parts, even though I was fascinated. I guess it is a bit of a weird suggestion, and picking music to please everyone will be impossible, but there's my two cents worth. :)

    just a suggestion if you are making a lot of these and have at least a larger base pattern you like (even better if rivet placement is part of that) you can probably get a local metal shop to make you die to cut from your leather just using a few clamps for pressure at the right points and save your hands a lot of cutting and use less material by putting the shapes closer together

    This was really good, I might have to see if I can work out a way to make a bigger box (might need an internal structure). If you have seen the Transformers TCG, some of the cards are nearly the size of an A4 sheet of paper.

      It's the tanning proses that ups the cost plus supply and demand... not many people do leather work at home so they got to make their money off the few that do... Your big leather shops buy in such bulk they pay a fraction of what we pay and still sell at a high mark up, again because they sell to a small market of people so to turn a profit they have to sell high... Supply and demand!!!! That the name of game of free enterprise "Supply and Demand"

    Complete waste of time, you didn’t show what you were doing and there wasn’t even music to listen to while we waited for you to finish lol
    I don’t mean to sound like a troll lol
    I really don’t lol. It’s just I expected better from you based on the first 20 seconds or so of the video.
    With the loud dramatic music and the script of the channel name on “old time” parchment floating by lol
    and then Bam! into the acoustically challenge room and then the silent Bob version of how to cut leather lol. Really?! And you want us to take you seriously? Lol. I’ll watch the rest of the video and leave a closing comment.
    Cheers mate

    A suggestion, put a couple of drops of dish soap in the water, your leather absorbs the water more completely and bends easier so easy the block of wood is not necessary. I have found this works even when you are moulding your Leather around an object. Questions feel free to contact me. ✝️⚾🙃

    Just kind of randomly ended up here... After you fold the creases with the block and started re-folding the edges, why not use the block to press them instead of just your fingers? That makes more sense to me; you'd get a better crease, wouldn't you?

    Greetings from Germany! Nice video! Just one... advice? My sister is a satchelmaker, she uses a halfmoon shaped knife to cut out patterns. I tried it and it is so much easier than using a pair of scissors and it gives you a much cleaner cut than an exactor knife. These knifes maybe are a bit more on the expensive side but they are truely worth it.

  • @michaels728

    I didnt see you use an edge groover to round the edges before you dampened them with your sponge before using your rounding tool. I think you missed a step. the edge groover comes in 3 sizes 2, 3, and 4. Also you wasted far to much material next time when laying out your pattern if it has a straight edge place your straight edge of your pattern closer to the edge of your leather especially if you have already made a straight cut from a prior project. Will save you a lot of wasted material for your next project when that half an inch may make or break you if you dont have enough from wasted material. And rather than using your scissors all the time to cut out your piece if you use a ruler and a rotatory wheel knife or a utility knife you can cut your straight lines then use your scissors for the more difficult cuts. Save you a lot more time both in work and your hands. And you can mark on your grain side of the leather if you wanted to. Just dont use a ball point pen or marker. Use a pencil instead plus you wont see the marked lines later anyways for when you use your edge groover it will cut that section of grain leather off that shows your pencil mark anyways and youll never see it when you buff your rounded edge.
    But one thing to do before you buff your edges with the wheel slicker when rounding the edges. Sometimes you may not get a good straight cut from your scissors or knives when cutting it out of your leather. Just use a small piece of medium or fine grit sand paper either by hand or a belt sander to even your cuts to give it a nice cleaner look before you use the edge groover to round the edges. Most my projects depending on how intricate the pattern is. ill take it to my belt sander for the straight edges then hand sand the curves etc Itll really clean up your edges and make them look better and more professional. Also like the wheel slicker, or modeling spoons, or just a simple teaspoon works ok for buffing the edges but anything small works great too. I have a couple of various deer antlers to get into tight spots with to slick my edges. And if you need something even smaller go to your local hobby store that carries doll house accessories and you can pick up some small wood turnings used in doll house decorations like fennials, etc and those work great to. I use those also for more detail edges.
    If you can rather than using a dauber which takes to much time and it dispenses to much dye in small areas of your leather. Next time your in Tandy get some wool scraps and cut them into squares or rectangle shapes. Then with your scissors take off about half the thickness of the wool hair off the wool pad. This will evenly absorb the dye and folding the wool pad in half to disperse the dye evenly throughout the pad then using a circular motion with the pad will spread the dye more evenly over the leather when dying it to avoid having spots that absorb more then others which the daubers will leave streaks unless thats the look your going after. Ive used my wool daubers only if Im trying to make my leather look old and aged which the streaks will give that effect.

    Have you tried or considered adding the holes to your template instead of free-handing it? As you were holding the leather with all the holes in it, I was thinking that I would have laid it out on the template and marked the holes there before fastening it together. It might make the second build faster.

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  7 лет назад +1

      Ryan Anderson Sorry Ryan - just saw your msg. We've tried that before, but unfortunately every piece of leather is different (darn cows) even from the same hide. Due to this variation, we've found that punching holes separately on each box keeps a high level of quality. Doing so beforehand can create a crooked box or a box that doesn't line up well due to the differences in leather.

    For leather items like this deck box is it necessary to condition the leather periodically to extend the life of the leather? If so what do you recommend, would the leather new work for maintenance?

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  7 лет назад

      Jenny Swenson Yes, Leather New could work, but Neatsfoot Oil is better. In fact, the more you handle the Box, the better it looks because the oils from your hands also help to condition leather over time.

    im drying to design my own template, what is the inside dimensions of the box? i want to make mine big enough to hold a commander deck with thick sleeves.

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  6 лет назад

      justawfulgamer To measure something specific like that, it's best to create your deck with the sleeves and then measure the deck. You want to make sure to give yourself a little extra in your measurements too, so that you have a little freedom and that your deck doesn't fit in the box so tight.

    Hi, great Video. One Question. With what material is made the (black) Pattern?

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  8 лет назад

      Mi Wenn It's actually a cheap yoga mat. You can also use EVA foam or poster board to create your pattern. :-)

      Shenlong Family Karate Thank you for your interest in our deck boxes. The easiest way to build a box is to start with the bottom measurement and work out from there! Good luck and have fun!

    First of all I would like to thank you for the tutorial. Very well explained and detailed. Thank you. I have had trouble finding a catch that gives enough height to close the box. Only meeting for wooden boxes. Already added that with pushbutton does not look too cool haha

  • @RoyTelling
    @RoyTelling 8 лет назад

    thanks I like this never worked with leather and alway thought about trying it but the cost worries me.. if you do it wrong
    BUT you say you can use a small spoon but you don't show how to use it

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  8 лет назад

      Hey Roy! Thanks for the comment. The key to starting with leather is to start out small and build. Over time you will accumulate the tools and knowledge you need to create bigger and better projects. If you have a Tandy Leather close by, they have some great starter sets for about $100. As far as the spoon, that is just another tool to help smooth out edges if you want. The actual tools to do that are pretty inexpensive, but sometimes the spoon is good for those hard to reach areas. Totally personal preference. Thanks!
