A couple of years ago, a fox started to visit our garden each evening, around dusk, looking for whatever scraps of food we had left out for the birds. Once we realised this, we would leave more food, especially for her, hoping to tempt her back. She would nose around, eat up any smaller scraps, then cram all the rest into her mouth at once, jump the fence and disappear. We had assumed she was just taking it somewhere more private to eat, because being in the garden made her nervous - we were wrong about that. One night, she appeared on schedule, squeezing through the back fence, but didn't come straight down into the garden like normal - she kept looking back, over her shoulder, waiting for something. Then three tiny, furry faces appeared, peeping through the fence. She'd brought her kids with her! Those cubs are still some of the cutest things I've seen in my life. Absolutely adorable. We were lucky enough to see them grow up, over the next few weeks too. Eventually, the mother started to use our garden as a kind of crèche. She'd drop the kids off at dusk to have their supper, leave them there to play for an hour or two while she went hunting, then reappear after dark to pick them up and go home. Pretty incredible to see.
