In August 1976, the reigning Formula One champion, Niki Lauda, suffered a nearly fatal crash. The moments after the crash ushered in a gloomy silence that cast dark shadows over F1 racing.
Niki Lauda was close to becoming one of all the drivers who have died in Formula 1. Thankfully, the incident kick-started a chain of changes to Formula 1 racing, many of which positively impact the sport today.
Niki Lauda was driving the Ferrari 312T2 on the day. After concluding the first lap, he decided to change to dry tires. Lauda soon returned to the race and picked up more speed to regain lost time from the tire change.
While many assumed that Lauda’s accident resulted from a mechanical failure, that wasn’t the case. Lauda’s freshly-changed dry tires quickly gave out. He lost control of the car and rammed into the fencing and earth bank. His fuel tank ruptured, quickly engulfing his vehicle in flames.
Lauda’s car bounced back to the track in flames and was hit by Brett Lunger. This hit slammed Lauda’s body hard against the seat belt until Arturo Merzario joined others to get him out of the burning wreckage.
Lauda suffered burns to his head, hands, and hair. He also inhaled toxic fumes, which infected his lungs and blood. He was airlifted to the hospital, but the race was later concluded without him.
Arturo Merzario was Niki Lauda’ Guardian Angel at the 1976 German Grand Prix.

Niki Lauda was one tough customer, his recovery from the injuries he suffered in this crash was one of the greatest if not the greatest.

Right spot, but wrong way
Another fact, nobody can taken off the seatbelts of Lauda's Ferrari since the team making their own seatbelts different from anyone on the grid.
Brett Lunger and Harald Ertl struggled to get it off, Arturo Merzario was the only one who got access to it because he is a former Ferrari works driver from both Sports Car division and Formula One 1970-1973 no wonder he was able to save Lauda real quick.
The thing was that Merzario hated Lauda because Arturo was fired from Ferrari to make Lauda in is seat, but the guy throw him out of the burning car, those mens were heroes 👍
And imagine that they became friends only after 40 years after crash

I have another one for you, if you are interested. That would be Nick Hogan’s (Son of Pro Wressler, Hulk Hogan) high speed crash of 2007’ in Miami, FL, where his yellow Toyota Supra struck a median and was spun into a nearby tree. The crash was reminiscent of a fatal, higher profile, crash which occurred in Valencia, CA on Thanksgiving weekend, just six years later in 2013’; which you have already covered. Nick Hogan’s crash was not immediately fatal for him, but was of dire consequence for his passenger and friend, whom suffered a coma and severe brain damage which he succumbed to in 2012’, I believe.

Yeah lauda was very lucky thanks to the help from guy Edwards who rushed in to get lauda out of the car that was in flames

People are crying about his money. The guy was a great mechanic and a great race car driver. So many jealous people on here its a joke. He was tougher and way smarter than Dale Earnhardt ever was.

Lauda will lose out the 1976 championship to his rival James hunt which was when he decided not to carry on at the Japanese Grand Prix fearing the race is too dangerous for him to continue

Man that crash was awful. It was horrific how both Jansen Van Vuuren and Tom Pryce were killed. In fact, it was Lauda’s first win since his own near fatal wreck. When he learned what happened, he said, there was nothing to celebrate about his victory, because two men were killed.

maybe from overheating they quickly wore out or lost their properties because he was driving too fast to catch up with lost time

He died he had a liver transplant I think he got a infection and he died he was very brave to come back after all he went through
