This was so much more informative than the long-winded gibberish MS put up on their help page; nowhere did they specify that you could not manually toggle it on and off, and that hence out of the box the Surface does not display the option to pause the smart charging feature! This implementation feels so awful, and for the longest time I thought I had a faulty product on my hands. Thank you so much for clearing everything up for me!
I have a surface pro 8 with windows 11 and the smart charging panel is just not displayed. Sometimes it's there and I can disable it, but sometimes it's not. It's really frustrating that I can't turn it off? Once I had to update my laptop to get it back to get the panel back and disable smart charging. Can you tell me how to fix this?
Unfortunately you don't have control over when smart charging turns on. If you've turned it off, you'll need to wait for a few days until your computer realizes it's been plugged into charge consistently then it'll turn on
I agree it's a good thing,. This video is more about educating people as to why it's happening and if they need 100% charge as they need their laptop all day without a charger, how they can disable it to get max battery life
They don't give us an option to manually turn it on, once your computer has been on charger consistently (I found pretty much about 3 days) it will kick in
I purchased a Surface Laptop Go 2 in July. This laptop did have the heart icon and smart saver. (Your video helped me to figure out this feature - thank you.) I had some bad luck and the laptop sustained water damage (my fault) and so I purchased another laptop about one month later. This laptop did not have any heart icon and did not seem to have the smart saver. Unfortunately this laptop froze less than one month after purchase (not my fault) and so I returned it (full refund) and purchased a 3rd laptop (same kind). The current laptop also does not have the heart icon and is charging to 100%. Does it take some time for the heart icon to appear and for smart charging to start i.e., after a sustained period of charging? I really would like this feature to work. Thank you
Sounds like you had a rough time with your computers! Not all Surface devices have smart charging, so I’m not sure if your current device has it built in
I didn't know this existed... so I had enabled the stupid 50% battery level cap in UEFI BIOS to stop my new Surface from toasting the battery. I will disable the UEFI setting now and use the Surface app functionality instead! (Smart charging is a complete MUST HAVE. My old Surface 2017 battery is completely toast due to battery being charged to 100% for a few years.)
If you REALLY need to turn it off (you always charge to 100% and drain it down over the course of the day while on the move), then you can disable Battery limit mode in the UEFI BIOS of the surface device. Shut down the device, then hold power and volume up together until the UEFI screen appears. Go to the settings page and disable Battery Limit Mode and it will always charge to 100%. I do not recommend you do this, as limiting the charge to 80% will extend the overall lifetime of your battery significantly! I only know this because for some reason my Surface Laptop Studio would never stop at 80% like it was supposed to, and I fixed it by turning this option on (which was supposed to be on by default).

You can download the app from the App Store. Not all Surface device have smart charging so if you have an older device it likely doesn’t have this feature. Hope this helps :)

I called microsoft for this issue, they told me to just return them.... one more question is I always have the charger plugged out when I turn the computer off. Do I have to leave the computer plugged in even when it is off to have the smart charger turned on?
Which device do you have? Smart charging isn't available on all Surface devices. Smart charging will turn on when the computer senses it is plugged into charger for extended periods of time. I had to leave mine plugged in constantly even when off for about 2-3 days before smart charging turned on. If you're unplugging your Surface when it's not being used, smart charging will realise it's unplugged for a lot of hours during the day and won't turn on. I'd try leaving it connected to charge for 3 days straight even when off and you should turn on :)
Pls let me know how can I do now that my laptop 4 battery is only show me 50% is the maximum evenly I charge over 5 hours. I just make unboxing this one last week:😢
Dear Aldo James , If i plug in the charger while using my surface studio laptop, if the battery is 100% full while i am using the laptop & plugged in , will my laptop be drawing the power from the charger and not from my battery as with rumours i found online . I believe there might be some truth to this strategy as i had a HP Envy thats 10 years old but it still gives me very good battery power . I know this becos when it was new and now after 10years , the full charge is quite similar . becos i always kept it plugged in while using the laptop, and plugged out if not using it The Battery might have been rarely utilised since the power is drawn directly from the charger . will this same strategy work for this Studio laptop ? question number 2 >> does it mean if we use the smart charging so if it stops charging at 80% , does that mean the laptop is drawing power directly from the charger ? if this is the case then i believe it can enhance battery life . pardon me for the long question . Hey David, to answer your question it will 'trickle charge' so if your device is at 100% battery the power supply will reduce the amount of energy it puts into the battery so it can keep it at 100% but isn't forcing in full wattage to replenish the battery and this is designed to help improve overall battery life. Smart Charging takes this a step further by limiting the battery to 80% WHILE trickle charging to ensure that the battery doesn't get overcharged as it has more headroom with 20% variance from full charge and this is to help further prevent overcharging of the battery. Hope this helps :)

My battery capacity is at 54800mah ... . i given u an average of the past 4 weeks ...checked using powercfg . roughly i am at 97.3% capacity after 12 months usage . i am plugged in mostly , with battery limit mode at 50% . i discharge about 10% to 25% daily . charge back up to 50 only . been using this strategy last 5-6 months ...i did see improvement . i also used a new strategy and i saw that the battery is more stable in its mah reading . less variance . I achieved this by using my wife's spare surface pro 8 charger at 65w . yes it works ...although it says " weak charging " ...i didnt lose any charge . stayed at 50% when i am plugged in . but the benefit is that i saw my temperature at task manager drop by 2 degrees on average . so this helps ? when i have discharged my laptop battery upon usage , i shut down . white its shut down , then i charge my battery . i worked out the maths for the time needed using the 65w charger . so just to share with you . I think my stats for a 1 year old SSL battery is quite good ya ? but i regret i initially didnt use this technique .
I have a Surface pro 8 and win11. Unfortunately even this tutorial didn't lead me to turn on smart charging for my surface. I still only have 100% in the menu and can't change it. I never set anything. So I don't know where the fault lies.
i expected to click on the heart.. I lost 20 min hunting for the way to pause it and shut if off. start menu bings me what it is.. useless as usuall. THIS VID COULD BE 1 MINUTE... TYPE SURFACE IN APP START... PAUSE SMART CHARNG.. ITS THE BEST YOU CAN DO.. WHEN ITS CHAGNED LEAVE THE HOUSE AND GO OUTSIDE AND WATCH THE SUNDAY FOOTBAL... LIFE IS SHORT.
Is there something similar for the Surface Slim Pen 2? It's in the keyboard and the white light glows when I put it in, but it's not charging. (Currently at 75%.) I'm guessing charge kicks in at a certain point but when? How do I know? And, what if I want to force charge it to 100%? Super weird that this is a problem.

Charging laptop battery to 80% triples the lifetime of the battery, so its a good thing, not a fix tbh.

Unfortunately this is inaccurate as of Feb 23. The option for smart charging in any capacity has been removed from the surface app.

My smart charging not work at all. I try set limit at bios. The charging become slow charge and exclamation mark showing at icon.

Eeeee laptop 4 shouldn’t have this feature! Did you get it to charge fully? If not I think your unit may have an issue

hey mate, Pro 8 doesn't have smart charging as a feature so you won't be able to have this feature turned on.
My Surface App did not include the Smart Charge control. Adding Surface Management Extension made this possible.

There is no PAUSE button on the surface app.
Which surface do you have? Not all Surfaces have the option. Only the newer models
let laptop run down to 20% and it will remove smart charging and it will go back to 100% once back on charger.
