I was in a sorority. My experience wasn’t quite as bad as these stories, but I was bullied by the legacies a lot. I was constantly in trouble for just existing, they broke my belongings, one intentionally slept with the guy I was seeing, some pretty gross behavior. It was really miserable to live in the house and I had to fight with the advisory board to get early alum status senior year to move out. The “mean girls” wanted me to drop out of the organization, not be an alum. Ultimately the advisory board granted my petition since I had the best grades in my year and I got to leave the house early.
Ironically, after college I never leaned into the networking because I didn’t trust anyone from the sorority and managed to make my way career wise without it. If I could go back in time I wouldn’t have joined at all.

On the origins of fraternities, keep in mind colleges and college life back then was VASTLY different than it is today. Colleges were primarily for educating professionals (doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists) and presented general networking opportunities. You didn't go to college because you didn't know what you wanted to be, or just didn't feel like getting a job.

My close friend joined a sorority, and for her hazing, they made her stand in front of a mirror (with no clothes on) while they talked about all of her "insecurities and worst body features." TW: discussion of hazing.
When I was a freshman in college, I attended several summer parties after moving in early where older sorority girls were present. They would tell me horrible stories about how their Big hazed them by making them sit on a dryer and circle every part of their body that jiggled. Then right after offered me a spot on their sorority if I rushed (which I then found out is called dirty rushing and not allowed). That same year, a fraternity released their pledge class (incoming group) to a sorority and the sorority was tasked with hazing the boys by doing "whatever they wanted to them". They dropped the men off in the middle of a field without their clothes and then the older fraternity members left their pledge class there to be assaulted by the sorority members. It ended up reaching the university very quickly, and the national officials for both the sorority and fraternity showed up to the campus to hold a week of hearings that resulted in a lot of those members being "delettered" (kicked out) and both were threatened with having their campus chapters shut down if there were any further incidents. A lot of the girls would complain at parties about being kicked out, showing no remorse for what they did. It was so bad. They never even faced criminal charges, it was a slap on the wrist to just get kicked out.

The thing that gets me ticked about the Greek System is that a degree of the people who go through it get into privilege or power due to not neccesarily being objectively qualified, but because of the social connections they made. This completely flies in the face of the whole concept of meritocracy.

I know the rugby team at my uni had a 'hazing' where they played rugby naked with a frozen turkey and my roommate came back from her hockey initiation so drunk and disoriented we ended up taking her to hospital. I have 2 best friends whose family had all belonged to a sorority all 3 of us come from really wealthy families and the stories they told me are quite shocking.
    1) 1 of them is blond, blue eyes, thin, tall and overall the ideal type for sorority, the other one is the same except brunette. My brunette friend suffered discrimination just because she wasn't blonde, while my blonde friend was favored.
    2) They weren't allowed to even speak to me or other people who were NOT part of their sorority often told they would get some sort of punishment if they did.
    3) They were often forced to diet and almost sleep with make up and couldn't eat past 7PM.
    4) They weren't allowed to speak to guys who didn't belonged in a certain sorority and often forced into dating the guys who "choose" them. Yes CHOOSE them as if they were items and not people. Also, the whole necklace thing was more of a way for the guys to kinda claim the girl as their "property".
    5) They often got forced into heavy drinking and one time even drugs, forced to smile and look pretty all the time as well as look like they were having fun.
    6) My blonde friend told me about how her roommate was "sold off" basically human trafficking. Apparently this sororities aren't nothing but a trafficking organization who look for the prettiest girls to actually sell to wealthy older men for sex.
    7) They weren't allowed to wear certain clothing but always forced into very provocative clothing not to mention forced into practicing all this dance moves to gain members and "sponsors".
    8) Lastly, the reason they decided to drop out was when they were getting pressured into sex and again be nice and treat the "sponsors".
Not sure if anyone out there has heard or experienced the whole " sponsors" thing or it was uniquely to the sorority that my friends belong to but to me that is so cult like attitude not to mention human trafficking.

When I was 17 years old I was at a Halloween party with my boyfriend. He had gotten accepted into college the year before and this fraternity had some from friends of his in it. We were moving around in a crowded basement between these 2 rooms and my boyfriend at the time was holding my hand a guiding me through the crowd. He was walking in front of me and I just felt someone grab my ass and squeeze. I was so scared and ask my boyfriend if that was him. He looked at me and asked what I was talking about and I told him that someone just grabbed my butt. He began asking me if I saw who it was and I told him that I was too scared to look and I just wanted to leave. We immediately left and I don't really like to talk about it anymore because it just makes me so mad. I was a minor, they even marked my hand to show that I was still a minor. I have never really believed that any frats or sororities have needed to exist. I understand that they came from pure beginnings, but that is over now. I don't think any college should allow any sort of Greek life on campus.

The hazing in movies and TV shows just made me mad and I knew it was problematic and just looked like bullying to me. Which is ironic because I can now see some of the things In sororities that I thought were “fine and normal” were not because the cult I was raised in did the same things.

My parents attended West Point (college in the US that is training for the army. Degree is free but you pledge at least 5 years in the army post graduation). Hazing is literally built into the entire culture and some of the policies. One of my moms common stories was how the first years unofficially had to serve older students at every meal. You would be told to cut a pie into 17 equal pieces and if it wasn’t perfect you would be verbally and/or physically harassed. The amount of sexual abuse within the military is also beyond disgusting. There are no fraternities or sororities there but the whole school has that same cult mentality. 0/10 would not recommend

    • @_no.one.is.always.right_
      @_no.one.is.always.right_ 3 месяца назад

You are absolutely right. This ragging thing or being in cults, clique trend, heirarchical, judgemental, discriminatory, overbearing, condescending, shadiness, pettiness, perniciousness, slyness and splitting mentality that exists worldwide today was started by people in military. Then University students also accepted and started repeating the same things as a trend because it happened to them. Instead of introspecting and realising that they should Not make anyone else go through the same thing because they know how it feels; they decided to use others like an emotional punchbag to throw their own emotional baggage at others and to regulate their own emotions. People preach morality and integrity and then their actions contradict their words and what they claim that they are and believe themselves to be. I avoid rude people but i can never trust hypocrites. Hypocrites are no different than rude ones and they feel the need to hide their reality because they are even more disgusting.
Those who don't ask themselves the same questions they have for others need introspection and truth more than answers. This line fits perfectly on hyporcitical people who take pride and think they're morally superior because they hide their reality and are calm in public. They don't understand the difference between diplomacy and Hypocrisy and they can never be morally superior because they lie to themselves. They cannot even look at their reality.

Great video! One note: Being a lavalier means that you're allowed to wear the letters of your significant other's organization. It was more than a necklace. In order to lavalier someone into your organization, the entire sorority or fraternity had to vote to approve the person to be lavaliered. It meant you had approval of the brothers or sisters in that organization.
Greek Life can definitely be dangerous. I was an Alpha Xi Delta at a small private college and I had a positive experience. I was taught a lot by my sorority sisters, and I feel part of a community. Sure there was drinking and partying, but we weren't hazed and we had to maintain a certain GPA to stay in the sorority.

I was going to say this- Hazing is terrible and I think it’s a bigger issue at big schools. I went to a small school where our Greek life was 3 sororities and 3 fraternities and everyone knew everyone. Our school had super strict hazing rules and we had a lot of things we weren’t allowed to do because it opened the door to hazing. The worst story that happened was actually right after I graduated and became an alum of my sorority. The girls in my chapter had been caught throwing out newspapers due to being accused of hazing (which ended up being unfounded after investigation) and it was a huge story at the school and got around to the point all of us Alum had a text thread about it.

I was a Sigma Alpha Iota at a small private college. Our 'hazing' consisted of this - at the start of pledge week you got a safety pin with ribbons tied in a bow to wear. You had to have it on every time you stepped out of your room. If a sister caught you without it, they went and grabbed the "pin of shame" which was a huge safety pin with a huge ribbon bow on it. You wore that the rest of the day and then went back to the regular pin the next. It was all in a good fun.

    TRIGGER WARNING- SA
I was raped by a frat guy who said he'd walk me home from a party. I think this was my second week of freshman year. I was 17. I'm also autistic, and unfortunately after it happened the first time I did was take a shower. Once I was finally thinking straight enough the next morning to actually process what had happened to me I made the decision not to go to the cops. I blamed myself and didn't tell a soul what had happened to me for 5 years.
Another girl who was raped by a frat guy... Everyone turned on her, tried to ruin her life. She ended up just shutting up and leaving I guess because I never saw her around again. I saw what happened when you accuse a frat guy and that further reinforced my decision.
These guys would talk about running train on girls passed out up in their rooms. The girls they considered "hot enough" would get brought up to their private lounge rooms and sometimes bedrooms. They kept the drugs and the good liquor up here, and they always had some girly cocktail mixtures and stuff on hand. They would be very forceful that we drink and drink and, "That's right, good girl, keep drinking." Pretty much how you escaped was saying you had to go to bathroom and those were in the hallway so you had to leave the room. That was some crazy stuff...

This was a great overview. I am a brown Apache Indian and have had mixed experiences - some very surprising. Others were horrible. In graduate school, I had a roommate who went onto become a fraternity president at Arizona State. He was a nice Italian guy from Boston. When he moved into his fraternity, I actually helped him move in - a brown Apache guy from the reservation. He wasn't racist at all. He even told me my Native American appearance somewhat resembles some Italians. At first, I thought he was joking but I learned some Italians are very tan due to intermixing with surrounding countries of the Middle East - different color shades resulted in Italy. In the corporate world, I had one coworker from a high-ranking fraternity at Nebraska who was very polite and supportive of my career. He gave me good reviews. Those two guys were not "racist frat guys" at all.
By contrast, I did run into racism with two fraternity guys in Tallahassee. I used to go to a local gym and there were two frat guys who always lifted weights together. Over time, one of them said to the other how ugly he thought I looked. Eventually, they tried to pick a fight with me. I contacted the Division of Student Affairs at Florida State. They wanted me to call the police on those two white frat guys who clearly wanted to get violent. But I just quit the gym and left.
After that experience, I started going to the main FSU campus gym seeking safety in numbers. I thought I would run into racist frat guys again. I even notified gym staff and asked them what to do about calling police. They said they would help me. But I never ran into two racist frat guys like that again in the main campus gym. This was notable because there were MANY frat guys at the main campus gym as well. I played basketball with them numerous times over years.
So, in my opinion, some fraternities can have "problems" which can include racism. But they are not all like that. I think it's important to look at the individual and local context. With that said, the negative clusters are clearly out there as you pointed out.
As for sororities, I know Alabama has had issues with racism. I read one article about a light-skinned Latina who made into a southern sorority in Mississippi. And she noted harsh racism behind the scenes and a clear preference for white segregation based on Eurocentric beauty standards. Such horror stories are common on the internet about southern sororities. So, at FSU, when I studied the MPH I was totally avoidant of a southern sorority girl in the class from Georgia. She often came in with her sorority letters on shirts and events they had sponsored. I didn't even want to acknowledge her presence because I thought she was virulently racist. I was cold and distant at first. But over time it became clear to me she wasn't racist. Ironically, she was actually the nicest person in the class to me. I got to know her in the courses and from the state job where she worked in the next building. I often saw her there. I learned it was wrong to assume all southern sorority girls are racist. She clearly was not. I was surprised but happy about it. With that said, the negative clusters you pointed out are there for sororities too. There were a few racist white women at FSU - not very frequent but annoying at times.
So, I think sororities and fraternities are not always bad. The population is large enough nationwide that many of them are nice normal students. But it's best not to pretend the negative clusters don't exist.

From what you said in the video, the whole "rush" period is weird AF. It's like who can impress each other more. The initiation process is also weird, creepy, culty and so WHACK. Like how is this even a thing?! Also the amount of drama, back stabbing and childish bullshit there was is unreal. Not to mention the hazing! During my time, there were a few frats and sororities that actually got kicked off campus for super dangerous and disgusting hazing. I, thankfully, was never hazed, but my other friends in other sororities were and the things they had to do just to "prove" that they were worthy of being in the sorority was wild and truly shocking.

What I found interesting when I went through rush, is that when you sign up to participate, some academic institutions or Greek systems have an almost NDA clause about rush embedded in the contract you sign. In my particular case, I was 17 as a freshman, so my NDA was never legal, as they just assumed I was 18. This was also never corrected later either. So when I watched the Bama documentary (I did not attend that university) it makes soo much sense why “big chunks” are “missing”….this put me in a very unique position, because I couldn’t hide behind an NDA if legally questioned, but I’m also not bound by one so I can legally say everything I personally witnessed…….yeah….yeah…wow…..it’s mind boggling how the system works to protect their own, and the lengths they go to………it gets to a point where trauma becomes almost normalized and in some cases, even celebrated “as a right of passage”. Yeah…uhh….yeah…Ummm..errr…there’s not an emoji for the face I’m currently making…..not all of it was bad, and not everyone does bad things. I wasn’t making an all encompassing statement.

    2. Who responds negatively without watching the video? That's stupid.
    3. You're not the first person to point these things out so there has to be some truth to it. I also went to a school where someone died due to hazing at his fraternity. I love my sorority sisters, but to defend Greek life while people are dying is pretty messed up to me.

But there is no hazing etc, although some people do still drink quite a lot of alcohol.
Also the memberships are usually only 10€ and only the events cost as well as no part is mandatory unless you are in the board for example as a corporate relations person or freshmen captain.
Altough here they are mostly called guilds instead, such as guild of electrican engineering, etc and the members are often the students of that major.

Frats/sororities are inherently good for students in my opinion. However, I think the honor societies that arent necessarily greek organizations are a better choice. There are people that abuse others in any organization. When a person has authority or influence over others, abuse is likely at some point, especially in a group setting. Frats/sororities are not cults. When drugs and or alcohol are involved with people, your obviously going to get crime. Many student organizations are doing a great job in what they do. I wouldn't lump all frats/sororities into one group as each is different. Im Christian ✝️ and so I follow Christ. Helping others is the name of the game. Take care.

Hey! I know this video is pretty old but I love watching stuff like this because since I'm an active member in a sorority, I feel like I can debunk some things and clarify. Obviously, there are things I'm not allowed to speak on, but it is nothing like what you think when I say that. I hate misinformation so the stuff I'm sharing I'm being serious about and genuine.
terminology: Chapter (a specific sorority/fraternity at a specific university (e.g. Sigma Delta Tau, Gamma Lambda Chapter (SDT at FSU) is different from Sigma Delta Tau, Upsilon Chapter (SDT at IU, Bloomington), Ritual (personal information that each chapter has which it is not allowed to share with 3rd parties not in those frats or sororities (they can still share with other chapters in their own sorority (so SDT Gamma Lambda can share with SDT Upsilon chapter))) POC (people of color). PNM (potential new member)
For the hazing and rape/sexual assault I totally agree, there are way too many greek chapters in the US that haze in very unsafe ways when they shouldn't be doing it at all. I am lucky enough to not be in a chapter that hazes and they're all like my best friends, but I am in no way saying that it doesn't happen. It's a terrible issue, and I wish that panhellenic would do more than showing awareness slides to PNMs to stop it.
For the social media posting limitations, the only limitations that most chapters have are to protect ritual information (aka personal things different chapters have to initiate new members, elect board members, voting etc.) and the image of the chapter. For example, my sorority sisters are not allowed to post pictures of themselves for initiation, but lots of other sororities allow it to celebrate! It's less culty in my opinion as it is just what has been done over time because of how personal it is. If we were to expose those things, it would not feel as personal and sweet because we're just sharing it with everyone. Greek life secrets can definitely vary from dangerous to terrifying, but in my experience, the secrets are for bonding purposes and not to keep outside parties from seeing any cult-like activities. Secondly on this issue, to me it makes sense to have restrictions on what members can post because they are representing their chapters and obviously their chapters don't want to show off underage drinking or anything illegal since they're a professional organization. Nothing I personally am restricted from posting hinders my life in any way and it doesn't feel controlling since it's information I wouldn't have if I wasn't in the chapter and it's just respectful to my sisters and alumn.
On the topic of sororities only having girls that look the same, I definitely think there is a diversity problem at almost every school that permeates not only greek life, but just the school population in general. There have obviously been racist circumstances where some greek organizations don't even let in poc, which is terrible, and this is something else panhellenic needs to recognize as suspension worthy on a higher level. There are black sororities and fraternities, however, I would like to see a greek norm one day where poc are in every chapter consistently. I can't say that there aren't some chapters that judge girls on their looks, but I also genuinely believe it's more about fitting in with the girls at those chapters than looking the same as them. When I went through recruitment, there was a disproportionate amount of women with platinum hair and tanned skin. Nothing wrong with that I love a good sunkissed look, but I'm saying this to show that since the pool of women rushing are disproportionately white and blonde, the amount of women in the sororities are also going to be mostly white and blonde. It's encouraged for PNMs to be themselves and wear what's comfortable during recruitment and as far as I'm aware this is true for all panhellenic associations, but it has become the norm over time to dress your best and show off the best side of yourself, which definitely causes many girls to get stressed over looks. I wish that every PNM could understand that if a chapter doesn't invite you back because of your looks, you wouldn't want to be a part of that anyways. I know lots of chapters at other schools do it and I could not be more disappointed because it's very shallow and definitely not a good representation of what sisterhood should be about.
With that being said I really do love my sorority and greek life culture because it hasn't been toxic to me and I've found some of my closest friends in my chapter. Sisterhood events (things like painting pottery together, watching a movie together, etc.) are so fun too it's honestly just the biggest excuse to spend time with people you automatically get along with as long as you put yourself in the right chapter. If any PNMs are reading this, I have 3 little pieces of advice.
    1. Go greek, but not at the caust of your life, safety, or mental health.
    2. Greek rank is very petty and rarely accurate to how you will experience those chapters. See if you like it and if they're a-holes, leave. Everyone has different experiences.
    3. Be yourself in rush/recruitment and you will have the best time. Being anyone else would undermine your stellar personality!!!
If anyone has any questions def comment and I will answer! Like I said, I love talking about this and debunking misinformation so be my guest!

First time watching your content. Just so you know, gossiping is ALWAYS bad. There is NEVER a time when gossiping should be considered "sharing information." Gossip is MISinformation that's harmful to other people's reputation and usually is untrue in part or wholly.
Nobody likes a gossip. If they're talking about other people to you, they're talking about you to other people. Not a friend.

Ive been in the army for 4 years we dont lie about the stuff that happens to new guys or fngs the stories coming out of fraternities and or sororities is sometimes horrible my first barracks party/ initiation was to chug a redbull with a 50 50 mix of Hennessy and vodka and then down 10 shots sucked but was fun in the moment

I did Greek life in university. I was in a service sorority and an academic one.
A lot of the ones in the news are social. (If it has a house, there's a 99.99% chance it's social.) Social Greek life has always interested me, but in how they function. I'm curious to see what you have to say about them. I'll probably have another response after the video.

i was in a sorority.. i’m so sorry for all these bad experiences, but i wanted to shed light on the good side! my experience was amazing and not every sorority or fraternity indulges in “hazing” or “bullying”. sure, you won’t get along with every girl but at the end of the day those are your sisters and they’re there for u when you need them most. depending on the sorority if you don’t attend an event you don’t get fined, all depends on the amount of sisters u have. and lastly, it’s not just about paying for friends, you’re apart of an organization that raises money for their philanthropy and bring in the legacy going for your specific organization!

there was a rumor at our school that alpha phi hazed their newbies by making them sit on washing machines and circling all the areas of fat that jiggled with a sharpie. another guy i remember hearing about was “kidnapped” and dropped off in the middle of nowhere in the dark without a phone so his objective was to find his way back
