Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the capital Dhaka amid violent anti-government protests on Monday. Soon after, thousands of protesters defied curfew, marching on the capital's streets and later storming Hasina's palace. Visuals showed crowds running into Hasina's official residence in Dhaka, waving to the camera as they celebrated. The protesters also vandalised a humongous statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Hasina and the former president of the country. The protests initially started by students seeking to end a quota system for government jobs escalated into violent confronations with police and government supporters. This violence spurred more protests demanding accountability from the government. At least 91 people were killed and hundreds injured in the clashes on Sunday. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.
