No there will never be any other guitarist like Mr Allan Holdsworth I met him in Cleveland Ohio at the Winchester club and he's taught me a lot about guitar in general thanks to Allan I wrote a song influenced by him with the chords
This 2000s era holdsworth was his pinnacle. Sixteenth man of tain is just unearthly and flat tire is groundbreaking too. His soloing is the most fluent through this period. And his tones were more tight I feel. The Then! album is his best soloing for sure.
When I first heard Allan, I was 17-18 years old and wasn’t ready for him yet. Now that I’m older and have been playing for 20 years, I say with confidence that he is not only one of the greatest guitarists ever but also one of the greatest improvisers ever. A genius in the realm of John Coltrane, Ayden Essen, etc.
I met Allan Holdsworth in Cleveland Ohio at Winchester club I'll miss him thanks to him I was able to write a Jaz metal song using some of Allan's unique chords
Man...He is totally on top here! Seems totally focused and sober. Immaculate playing and language! Outerwordly... I read your comments about his personal life...Thats sad. He seemed like the healthiest ego best humourous person. Anyway...he never really got divorced, his better half was in fact his guitar all along. Rest in Peace and Love Allan
Rest In Peace Allan. I was 19 when I saw the Road Games tour with Berlin and Wackerman at a local club here in Tempe, Az. On acid. I also saw Metal Fatigue and Sand (on mushrooms). And again in 2007. Allan made a deep mark on my life. I'm so grateful for him. These were perspective-shifting experiences for me.
I don't even think you're exaggerating about the perspective shifting; Allan had that kind of power; beyond normal, and I can only imagine the effects of seeing him in that profoundly altered state. I saw him many times, but never while tripping; I did see Mahavishnu Orchestra on mescaline once; it was awesome but a bit tense! That sounds both exhilarating and terrifying; I love it!
@@Gregorypeckory Unreal. A jazz fan since the 80's, I JUST LAST WEEK started to listen to Mahavishnu for the first time EVER. Birds of Fire and Inner Mounting Flame. I can't possibly explain how I never got to them. Maybe fear. I've even seen Cobham twice (2nd time two months ago). Now I love them. I can see how there are some sharp elbows in the McLaughlin/Goodman riffs for some people, but from the right perspective it is breathtaking. Thanks Greg!
I heard Allan Holdsworth the first time when IOU came out….at that time I was 14 years old and heavily into Al Di Meola…..His approach mesmerized me….. many years later I was able to transcribe Secrets……spent endless hours in my room jamming to that record and Metal Fatigue…..met him while living in London in the late 80s/early 90s……I was invited to audition for Level 42, but as they told me, Allan is also trying out, I declined…..
At first I said "Oh no..another iPhone recording..."..but turns out it doesnt matter....Allan is totally ON for this gig..I havent hear a false note for the last 6 tunes!!
Here he still had "16 Men of Tain" CHOPS. I don't know what went wrong in this tune, but it had Allan smiling. Allan was like that. I smile when something goes wrong onstage. Allan even bites his tongue outwards tool. Allan apologizes to the audience during applause. In between shows he's practicing. It's difficult for Allan to play under bright lights and cameras. He took many years to front his own band.
I have searched and searched for tour dates for the Road Games tour, Metal Fatigue tour, etc. and never found any online. Does anyone know if any exist? Thanks.
Allan is such a methodical (and brilliant) guitar player; his playing displays his genius--as does Mr. Ernest Tibbs (bass). Not sure who the drummer is (*Gary Husband, perhaps - as it is a European tour?). *Corrected - Drummer Joel Taylor. (Thanks @Manuel Cebada)
Between 21' and 24'50 is beyond understanding. I Always wondered what kind of music would be played (if any) in the spiritual realms. For sure, this is the best approximation to the Music of the Spheres. Pure joy. We'll never know what Allan had on his mind, but it must have been really wonderful to be able to manifest it in such a brilliant way. More than music, it's a key to a spiritual path. Thank you for this.
I'm 33 and my wife is 87, I had this playing and she said "That is the ugliest music I have ever heard in my life" ....been pondering divorce ever since.
With proper EQ the muddy mids can be scooped and there's always a EQ/Filter to scrub the noise. If this is attached to the .mov first separate the audio then Pro Tools for processing. the audio only. Reslip after to the video. The performance is worth it.
Michael Powell, this concert was filmed by my friend Peter Arends. We tried to eq and stuff but it is all mostely distortion from the (wrong set up) cam mic which can't be removed unforunately....
Anyone who might be in any doubt that God has never taken time out of his busy schedule, and visited his creation of Earth......well I hope this satisfies all of your questions! ;-)
I do not believe in or advocate any kind of God, and I agree with you. I hope people do not take my comment too literally, other than to realise just how magnificent Allan was (from the same hometown of Bradford as me too). Hard work, practice etc are one thing, but some people are just "wired" differently to everyone else, and so when looked at like this it can be regarded as natural born talent too.
I am right there, and I agree as an atheist who reserves the right to use the god delusion as a concept for the sake of making a point now and then too; in that spirit, Allan was indeed, god of guitar!
@MorbidManMusic God is "vengeful man" for the persons that taught this way. Jesus is freedom not slavery. Allan was incredible and yes he did it by "himself" but the definition of an atheist and a believer is another story....The personal morality of each individual is another story too. There are "satanists" with better moral values than many "Christians". ..but it has nothing to do with God. After all peole are free (and made to) do whatever they want.
Why the hell was he losing so much weight? I remember reading that he was couch surfing after his wife divorced him, so maybe that had something to do with it.
I mean it was 2003. Sorry -losing the plot lately. And I don't know about his personal life, except that he's hyper self critical and has basically been unproductive since his divorce.

He was a brilliant musician. And at the same time humble as they come.
Can't get enough of Sixteen Men of Tain-era Holdsworth performances at the moment. Absolutely excellent!
Holdsworth and his endless noodling. I love every second of it. Thank you Allan for sharing with all us your wonderful talent. RIP Maestro
As if he's looking for something and I don't wanna miss it when he finds it. It's a lovely search.

Yeah, he's on top of his game here and this is a much more approachable piece for the uninitiated, in my opinion.
Allen Holdsworth - człowiek który zmienił na zawsze grę na gitarze i w 30 lat pchnął świat fusion-jazz o 100 lat

Allan's music itself is an experience. But I'm not condoning using whatever you want to appreciate the music.
A strum-free guitarist. Will there ever be another like him? 💜
I doubt there will be. but just 40 seconds he did 1 strum haha
i dont strum because I have problems in the hands
@@ivonsmith4255 ...by golly, you're right. *Mostly* strum-free. 😀
I play pretty much the same way with my right hand. Almost always pluck rather than strum. What were you expecting, Pete Townshend?
of course !

Would have made sacrifices I never would make if there was one chance to have Holdsworth sit in with Spyro Gyra.
Some dreams just never happen 😢.
1st tune is "Leave Em On" from Gary Husband's solo record. so nice!
I can't put in words how great Allan was.
Band members (from Allan's words): Ernest Tibbs (bass), Joel Taylor (drums)
Can t find the correct adjectives to express the magnitude of this awesome music!!! Reminds me when I first heard Charlie Parker
Good lord, finally a drummer that doesn’t play to loud and a bassist that’s carful about his notes, not to mention an Allan that’s reaching.
Better sax player by far than most sax players
What an absolutely killer drummer!!!
Simply amazing, Allan is one of a kind. Thank you so much for sharing these great videos.
Listen to any other guitarist and you’ll see why in 2 seconds holdsworth is the greatest guitarist to ever live
At first I said "Oh no..another iPhone recording..."..but turns out it doesnt matter....Allan is totally ON for this gig..I havent hear a false note for the last 6 tunes!!
He was superhuman! So sadly missed.
There is only one Allan Holdsworth !
Not any more :/
Hi, SpiritNirvana, I filmed this movie 'live' in De Boerderij okt 29, 2003.
Edited it yesterday and added some pictures also made.

I read that fronting his own band was more about money than stage fright.
Spirit Nirvana, ur the man! ty so much!
Back in 2002 Allan told me this (16 men) was the first Really complete album he had done since Sand.....
defo the coltrane of the guitar
Wonderful. Takes me back.
the one and only...

Oh my God ,this really deserves a better quality of sound.

The sound could be crystal clear but the music will always be awful.

a one off... his love for headless guitars and tarantula spiders spoke volumes..
Great playing from Alan, as usual!
Great camera angles too, clearly taken by a guitarist, cheers.
i second that. many hours of quality viewing thanks to you!!

Leave Them Alone was sick !!

Most innovative chordal composer since Debussy
I was just wondering how anyone cannot love this, then I saw 4 thumbs down. Sad.
There was a general hate on the internet for Allan Holdsworth some 10 years ago. It seems to be less hate now, when he’s gone.

So far, it's the only version of Water on the Brain live ? Thank you for sharing this document. Such a pleasure to see him perform.

this playing reminds me of a Focus track with Phillip Catherine on guitar. Can't quite remember the title.
sweet!
