I am a six string fretless bass player improviser I play on and off a lot with Joe Berger but I swear at the last thing that we just got on my house because this Saturday I would have loved to have a guy like Jeff sitting on those drums simple set so much sound nevertheless I got a chance to check him out when I saw John McLaughlin close to my home and then North performing Art Center amazing and especially I got turned on to him with the Jonas hellborg stuff even more amazing this guy rocks
This album has never left my car cd changer ever since I first bought it - stunning - esp Jeff's very sensitive interplay - he should give Wayne Krantz a hand - Alex brilliant as ever - meant to have left the industry with the previous album - praise the Lord somebody saved him and brought him back to this...
One of the many joys of living in Los Angles is getting a chance to see and hear Machacek play live! He plays often at The Baked Potato quite often in several different combinations of musicians. He's arguably the best modern fusion guitarist on the planet. Scott McGill is another one that's up there.
love the intensity, its very musical in an abstract way, reminds of brand x, holdsworth, bruford, all the bands I love, but unique too, brilliant stuff!!
+1 dude you're spot on...if no one took from other people there wouldn't be any progress...no fusion of styles...music would be stuck. Fortunately most musicians aren't close minded and draw from many people/styles/experiences etc
How does Jeff Sipe even think this fast, let alone actually do this? Alex is relentless on this tune. This entire song doesn't even seem possible to do. Their sense of timing is unreal.
That's some incredible musicianship! Nice to see real musicians playing thru an entire piece of music in the studio and not doing all this cut and paste nonsense everyone is doing these days.
Hey Kudos ! this is fun , I dig it and these cats can play. Alex your lines and tone are great. Clever and yet not too full of itself and natural sounding to me. Keep it up !
its this weird ass little green multi fx unit, i did a guitar clinic with him for a week last summer and he showed it to me. i dont remember what it was called though.
Machacek has written many great pieces on various albums. This is only 1 piece off of 1 of his albums. "otherwise I'm listening to Jimmy Herring's excellent "Lifeboat" album which John McLaughlin recommended" By the way, John McLaughlin said this about Alex Mchachek “Alex Machacek’s music starts where other music ends. He plays some amazing guitar on (his CD) SIC…. He has done some very deep excavation in the mind of music.”
"When this guy writes a "Meeting of the Spirits" or "Peaches en Regalia" or "Beelzebub" then I'll listen" God, he must be WORRIED SICK about whether he's going to get your approval...
@jerefelis How is he the future of the guitar when Allan Holdsworth was already there 35 years ago? He sounds like Allan on steroids here. These guys need to forget about trying to outdo Holdsworth in technique & write a good composition meaning something that has both soul & complexity. When this guy writes a "Meeting of the Spirits" or "Peaches en Regalia" or "Beelzebub" then I'll listen, otherwise I'm listening to Jimmy Herring's excellent "Lifeboat" album which John McLaughlin recommended.
Music theory isn't rules. It is a theory to explain naturally occurring phenomena in music. If this is acceptable to your ears enough to play it you are starting to think in a place beyond most theory. Not better or worse just different. Extreme dissonance doesn't mean random either. The notes are chosen deliberately to be outside.
Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I just don't like when theory is called 'rules'. I am a big theory guy, and as you learn more you realize there is a name for literally anything you can do, and that realization is kind of liberating.
Alex's playing initially bored me - I didn't want to hear another Holdsworth wannnabe. But I really hear his own voice in this clip and man I'm digging it. But why oh lord are we seeing the Alex's back? Ugh!!!!
Jim, everyone rips off of everyone. Its called "influences". Describe for me how it is a rip off of Bruford. I guess it is a matter of opinion you think it sucks.
The drum genius - Jeff Sipe.

I like when they incorperate that 'ethereal' atmospheric parts, like at 4:30. Need to grab that cd.
Tribal Tech RULZ!

reminds me of king crimson's improvisational approach
Somewhat, yes--but at a neck-snapping tempo!
What a great drummer... wow...=| Not to mension the other guys..

The riff at the start is fucken low down mean and dirty.
