    One argument you hear against taxing large tech companies is that it will hinder innovation, seems like it would only hinder them buying up the small companies doing the actual innovation

    • @aoe4_kachow
      @aoe4_kachow 3 месяца назад +41

      Except this empowers creative people to get seed funding and perform innovation and R&D at lightspeed without the red tape of giant companies, and the investors know that in just a few years they can get bought by a big tech company. This means the profits go to the workers who do the R&D rather than back to big corps

    • @jonasson27
      @jonasson27 3 месяца назад +36

      You know that getting bought up by a company like apple is one of the most desired outcomes for a founder of a startup. They finally get their payout. Removing that and there would be less incentive to make a startup.

    • @FromDesertTown
      @FromDesertTown 3 месяца назад +56

      Taxing the rich is bad because they innovate and create jobs. Taxing the poor is good because it gives them motivation to move up the ladder. You literally find this argument in conservative circles - the "solution" to inequality is to enrich the rich and make the poor poorer, effectively taking away the ladder. The irony is completely lost on them.

    • @JellyLancelot
      @JellyLancelot 3 месяца назад +37

      Not directed at you; "taxing large tech companies is that it will hinder innovation" its a complete fallacy. A lot of modern inventions aren't from private interests at all, its a misnomer thats sold to ensure that people buy in to that false rhetoric. Innovation would happen regardless, to be human is to be curious. It has nothing to do with private equity.

At that point she assumed I was done and closed the list. She would never reopen the list no matter how I phrased the request so I had to finish it manually. Not long ago I thought I would try it again so see if it was better and now she won’t even start the list “I’m sorry, I can’t help you with that”. the scenario at the beginning of this video is an example of why AI is dangerous. siri will replace the sentimentality of you actually planning the date, and obscure the fact that you are prone to forget things like valentines day.. maybe due to your busy schedule or simply the fact that this is the type of thing you are prone to forget. this may sound harmless. but this minimizes our personal responsibility for, and the working through, these kinds of things that exercise our patience and understanding for one another. multiply this by millions of cases, and you can see how AI is creating a shell of social reality that will affect things like long term relationships and many other societal bedrock realites. deferment of responsibility to AI OMHO is dangerous.

    Apple’s M.O. has always been to let others take first dibs on something, watch how they screw up and learn from it, then come out with a much more polished version of it later on. In this case Siri is really an exception rather than the rule to the way they do things.
    In any case I’m pretty sure that, with regards to generative AI and machine learning, they are already whipping something up behind-the-scenes while learning from how the first movers (looking at you, Microsoft and Google) are screwing up and taking the lessons learned into account with their own implementation. This was also basically their strategy with smartphones, smart watches, tablet computers, and - with the recent release of the Apple Vision Pro - AR/VR as well.

    I had an Archos Gmini 400 series in the early 2000s. It could play videos on a color screen, or you could use included RCA cables to play the videos on a TV. At the time, Apple's iPod still had a monochrome screen... Then the iPod photo came out and had a color screen but still couldn't play video. It took them nearly 2 years to catch up. Granted, Apple has the iTunes store and video publisher deals and the Gmini was basically for people with pirated or DVD ripped content, so couldn't really be mainstream. Apple has always been way late as far as I'm concerned. Never owned one of their products and probably wont.

    1) Siri is not on-device. Try using it without internet. Your queries go to Apple's servers, unless it's command based (e.g. "open calendar").
    2) Siri privacy policy: "When you use Siri and Dictation, your device will send other Siri Data to Apple, such as: ... addresses, contacts, names of all apps installed, etc"
    3) "Leaking" a report that the Siri team is unable to improve Siri due to privacy reasons is called "narrative control". As described in this report, the truth is Apple is unable to improve Siri because Siri simply gives canned responses instead of an actual GPT that makes inferences. Llama.cpp (etc) runs fully locally on my mac mini. Why doesn't Siri? That Apple preserve your privacy is an excuse. Even when an App on the App Store says they don't use your data, developers still receive tons of usagedata/analytics directly from Apple because you tapped Agree the first time you opened the App Store. Swipe through and read the 100 page terms and conditions next time.

    • @Knevitzdoug
      @Knevitzdoug 3 месяца назад +1

      currently you need to have the full amount of RAM to run the model. With this new approach, it is possible to load the model on the SSD and process only the command to be executed, using only a fraction of the RAM. for example, a model that requires 128 GB of RAM is impractical for mobile devices, but if that same model is stored on the SSD, which currently exists exceeding 1TB, and to execute the command it only consumes 2GB of RAM when in use. This same model becomes viable on mobile devices. But of course, the models to be loaded on mobile devices will be much smaller, around 7BI/14BI of parameters. nowhere near the more than a trillion of chatGPT 5.

      I literally don’t see the point of pushing for on device ai. The only benefit is you don’t need a connection. The rest is a huge list of downsides. Worse battery life, longer processing time, more expensive devices requiring more storage memory and cpu power, inability to continuously update the model and interact with online applications, etc.
      Given that the whole industry is moving toward IOT and cloud computing, this on demand thing is working in complete opposite to this effort. Don’t companies *want* to handle user data to improve their services?
      And Siri isn’t even on device. It can’t even do basic offline tasks without an internet connection.

    • @user-fk8zw5js2p
      @user-fk8zw5js2p 3 месяца назад

      @@Jwellsuhhuh You make good points. But, let me state Apple's options IMHO. Currently the AI cloud that Apple would need for Siri comes from proprietary software running on expensive hardware running in an expensive to maintain server farm with internet connections fast enough to keep up with the demands of a large user base. Apple would have to pay for the overhead of that infrastructure and their internet would be provided by a telecom company who is incentivized to sniff all data packets routed through their own WAN. Despite what they have said, Apple doesn't champion user privacy; they are against other entities duplicating their user data without permission and compensation as information is a valuable asset. I guess Apple could also outsource their cloud infrastructure, but again they wouldn't be able to guarantee that Google Cloud, Azure, nor AWS weren't going to mine their customers' data somewhere between here and legal immunity.
      On the other hand, what if Apple's AI cloud infrastructure was instead a distributed system of customer phones? Like a CDN or torrent, the micro intelligences resident in each phone support each other with direct communications and by performing co-computations and swarm complex queries like a multithread application. This is especially true for phones that are idle at the time their hardware resources are needed by Siri for other users. Apple could encode all direct communications between phones at their factories so even cellular providers couldn't read it. And, the burdens of cloud infrastructure expenses, overhead, and risks are shifted away from Apple: onto their customers. It's kinda brilliant if they can get a solid edge in the ARM race and are able to patch together a cohesive AI system for Siri from tech buyouts.

At that time, 1993-ish, there were also at least a dozen major competitors in stylus devices, most notably palm pilot, and psion (which I could afford) - and then came the feature phones, first dominated by Motorola Flip Phones, for 10 years of improvments that incorporated text and video camera in addition to all of the palm device features like calendar and planner - though dumbed down.! The iPhone was made possible by the advent of I think it was 2G with the promise of 3G data at the same time in 2007. So - yeh. But it was also the first to offer an actual operating system and "apps" - which was the "third leg" of the trifecta.
