@@d_wigz6418 I dunno, the whole love triangle thing bugs the shit out of me, and there's such jealous tension between them that it makes it hard for me to like them together. (Rory is awesome, though. Love me some Rory.)
The thing I love about Donna is that she doesn't hesitate to call the Doctor on his crap. Rose and Martha put him on a pedestal. Donna treats him like a peer. They manage to convey a huge affection for each other without even a hint of romance. My favorite companion.
@Paula C I agree that each companion was what he needed at that point in time. And I didn't mean to say that Rose and Martha never ever called the Doctor out. But Donna seems to do it more readily than the others. Or maybe it just seems that way. The Doctor is an impressive and unique figure. The last of the Time Lords, The Oncoming Storm, all that. But he's also a person, with feelings and failings. And it always seemed to me that Donna treated him as a person first and as The Doctor second. Of course, she tends to do that with everybody they encounter. She looks beyond the title or position and sees the person, and what that person is going through. Which is exactly what the Doctor needed right then. Not saying that she's objectively better than the others. Like your said, they each were perfect at that particular time. Just saying that that's what I subjectively like about her.
The actor who played Donna's Father in the Christmas episode passed shortly afterwards. They brought in Bernard as her grandfather to replace him. Bernard is a Legend in British TV. And yes, he was in one of the Dalek Theatrical Movies in the mid 60s.
Howard Attfield lived long enough to start filming Season 4 (an alternate version of the first telescope scene in this episode shot with him is on the Season 4 DVD).
SGlitz please rewatch runaway bride. The actor that passed played her FATHER. They did not recast the role. Wilf was brought in as a new and separate grandfather character. His daughter later explains his absence as him being sick.
Fun Fact: The companion for this season was originally going to be called Penny, until Catherine Tate accepted Russel's offer to return as Donna. So Penny in this episode is a tribute to the companion that never was.
@@FANTHEORYTV Read the book "The Writer's Tale". (Actually, get the extended version, "The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter".) It's a long e-mail conversation between RTD and Doctor Who Magazine Editor (at the time) Benjamin Cook, stretching from the start of his writing Series 4 (and with the extended version, he goes through to the Specials). You get SUCH an in-depth look at Russell's thought process while he's writing Series 4 and the Specials. There's also a fairly heartbreaking part of the e-mail chain since it's during filming Series 3 that he's writing Series 4, which is when David Tennant's mother lost her battle with cancer. :(
Penny Carter was also going to be a love interest and that the Doctor was going to fall in love with her at first sight 'with both hearts'. And as much as I love Donna, I kinda wish we got that story as well, as I think he REALLY needed to get over Rose. But no, sadly, a) they made Donna a platonic relationship (though I still ship them anyway, as Tennant and Tate have WAAAY more chemistry than Ten and any other companion, IMO) and b) they treated Penny terribly in this episode (still not sure why they made fun of her -- she was doing all the same sort of sleuthing that Donna was, but Donna ended up getting helped by the Doctor and that was the only real difference. I thought Penny showed herself to ALSO be great companion material and it's not like Sarah Jane wasn't also an investigative reporter, so I don't know why she was treated so badly, but whatever. It's not like the Tenth Doctor doesn't usually treat other POCs like crap too. 😡).
@Nicole Mazza How was Penny treaten like crap? She was snooping around got caught the doctor freed her and instead of hiding or leaving she gets caught again frankly the doctor did more then enough for her. I'm glad Donna wasn't a love interest it made her character 10x better then both Martha and Rose, she was the first companion in new who not to pine after the doctor and hold her own as a good companion. Plus it tons of episodes the doctor mostly focuses on his companion, look at Martha's first episode he says to her come along but to leave the other girl behind because she'll "drag them down".
The window scene is the single best scene in all of NuWho, bar none. I will never get tired of it. XD Also the “a mate” scene. That one especially because it outlines their relationship beyond any reasonable doubt - friends and nothing else. It’s precisely what makes their relationship so great on a serious level, and provides the best running joke ever on another.

Your sentiment about needing a non-romantic companion like Donna made me smile. I think that’s why Donna is my favorite of the New Who companions. Rose and Martha kind of exhausted me, Donna was a breath of fresh air. Donna was the platonic friend that we all (and especially the Doctor) needed. 💕

A comic masterpiece. And I say that as someone previously unimpressed by Catherine Tate, and who actively loathed Donna in her first appearance. This still ranks as one of her funniest performances, channelling Katherine Hepburn at her screwball best. Oh and more Wilf, the most beloved character in all of DW (?).
Bernard Cribbins who plays Donna's Grandfather Wilf here was one of the leads in the 1966 Big Screen Dalek movie "Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 A.D." alongside famous Hammer Horror (and later Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars) actor Peter Cushing who played the movie version of the Doctor.

This is one of my favorite episodes. And you asked for a light hearted episode. I think this one cheered you up. I have an Adipose in my office at work...along with a bunch of Studio Ghibli stuff.
the actors great chemistry aside, i think telling the audience that this season, there wont be a romantic subplot, its just going to be two friends on adventures, it feels like this season has allmost breathing room, and a chance to explore a dynamic the show hasnt seen in a while (imo of course). so excited for season 4!!!
Hmmm. It looks like Paula had WAY too much fun with this episode! The nice thing about Donna as a companion, which you've already seen a bit of this episode, is that she doesn't take shit from anyone. Not even the Doctor! And that is what he sorely needs. And as for Rose. Rose Who? Oh, wait. Wouldn't that be her married name? Nah.
Hoping for a happy episode when watching Dr Who is like flipping a coin, except if you lose the coin toss you get shot So glad to see this is back though
I'm happy to see y'all liked Donna! A lot of people didn't, which blows my mind (but to each their own). I'll be happy to continue watching your reactions, knowing you won't be bashing on her the entire time :)
Welcome to series 4!! Considered by most to be the best series of Doctor Who from the modern era, possibly ever! It's certainly my favourite at least! Also, Donna's back! She's one of, if not the most popular companion ever and Ten/Donna is one of the most loved Doctor/companion partnerships ever. Donna is definitely my favourite and Ten/Donna is easily my favourite Doctor/companion duo. The writers develop Donna's character incredibly well across this series and the relationship between her and the Doctor is lots of fun. They will definitely have moments of disagreement, but there's very little of that childish bickering from "The Runaway Bride" anymore. It's also more of a best friends kind of thing rather than any romantic stuff. They both constantly challenge each other to be better, it's a relationship of equals. I don't think any two actors in Doctor Who had as much chemistry as Tennant and Tate did; it seemed effortless, when they were onscreen together. The next episode is a bit of an underappreciated classic imo, so I'm really looking forward to that one and most of this series tbh. This series is amazing from start to finish and quite like the previous series, the last six episodes is a tremendous run of episodes. This episode itself is a fun first episode, but it gets so much better than this. Get ready for a lot of intense, action packed episodes.
I love watching you guys. You get emotional and that get's me emotional. Where were girls like you when I was growing up??? LOL Looking forward to this new season with the two of you.
I’ve been waiting for this one, this season is my fave cause it is fun. And the return of rose tyler, brilliant, Paula’s reaction was hilarious. rose who? 😂😂😂😂
God the reaction to Rose was on point 😂 pretty much my reaction only less excited giggling and jumping. I will say right now this season is my fave. I freaking love Donna and oh yeah, PATREON PEOPLE! The full reactions are so much better lol
I've been waiting a fortnight to see Paula's reaction to Rose's reappearance - and she didn't disappoint! (PS Paula, you probably didn't read it, but I did say you wouldn't have to wait too long for a lighter episode. But save your happy feelings - you're going to need them! :) ) Of course, there was much more to enjoy in this episode and both your reactions to it and lots to look forward to in the next (which will hopefully be in SEVEN days!).
The Doctor and Donna re-meet by doing the same thing: they walk through the front door and act like they belong, which is how Donna proves she’s the perfect companion - she can adapt easily enough.
One of the reasons I didn't like Donna growing up (this was the first full season I watched as a kid but I saw a lot of Season 1 and 2) was because I was a massive Rose fan and like she is my favorite modern Who companion and secondly I didn't how it seemed nearly every episode Donna would ask to go home when things got really tough and dark. U see that a lot in the next two episodes. Now days I think Donna is great, she is my second favorite New Who companion but yeah thats sort of what I think a lot of people thought about Donna when this was new
Yet another great reaction from the Gallifrey Gals. I can't wait to see Paula's reaction to this series, imo series 4 is both the funniest and has the best written series arc. (Yes I say series not season, I'm British, I watched this show growing up, leave me alone)
That's unfortunate to hear! I truly love this show so much and the direction it starts to head through and after series four! Maybe our reactions to it will help you see what I love so much about it ☺️
@@KatAlysha I love this show too, but series 1-5 is when it was at it's best for me. Series 4 being the standout (I thought most people agreed series 4 is the best?). That's not to say the show was bad post series 5, but it certainly doesn't compare to what came before it, imo. I'll continue to watch your reactions and explain why I think the show got worse as went along. It's safe to say the RTD era holds a very special place in my heart and will always be my favourite.
@@Mrazmatmahmood Whenever you find yourself thinking something like "I thought most people agreed..." about _anything_ 'Doctor Who' related it's always wise to really consider _why_ you think that. Hint: it'll likely be more to do with confirmation bias and the people you discuss the show with than anything else (because none of us actually know what "most people" think).
@@anonymes2884 No, the reason why I think series 4 is the most popular is because series 4 ranks at the top (or no lower than 3rd) on any best series poll and ranking list I've ever seen. It also has the highest average ratings for any modern Who series. The logical conclusion would be that it's the most popular series.
Bernard cribbins was always her grandfather, the guy from runaway bride, im pretty sure was her father, its said later that her father died, and her grandfather wasn’t at the wedding because he was ill
My first time through, I despised Donna. I held to that hatred for several rewatches, but when I started watching reactors, someone mentioned the fact that Catherine Tate's first episode as Donna was meant to be a one-off. She was written as a one dimensional, annoying as FRELL character. That's who I despise. Because once she was cast and brought back, they gave her depth and growth and okay, I no longer hate Donna. I vastly prefer Martha, but I'm excited to watch the Donna episodes more now. Also, I have an Adipose and have taken pictures with it hanging out with my cats and they're adorable.
Dalek Sram it really isn’t. Only those looking back with rose tinted specs think so. It wouldn’t hold up for a modern audience, and I’m not just talking about special effects.

However, it must be quite similar to some of the advertising slogans he recorded when he played a marketer of junk dieting supplements in _Hustle_: "Eat Yourself Slender".
Wilfred Mott is the best! He's an awesome addition to the show.
I think you're going to have quite a journey this season ..and its all going to be fun filled and rosey .....!
Nah.
One of the funniest things about this episode is that Donna killed someone by accident and had no idea...
And never will.
Hoping for a happy episode when watching Dr Who is like flipping a coin, except if you lose the coin toss you get shot
So glad to see this is back though
Bernard Cribbins, one of the UKs national treasures
My favourite companion of all! at last!
I'm happy to see y'all liked Donna! A lot of people didn't, which blows my mind (but to each their own). I'll be happy to continue watching your reactions, knowing you won't be bashing on her the entire time :)
Still the best combination of Doctor and Companion, but be prepared - lots of crying this season! Laughter and sadness!
Look who's back!
Wilf is just about the best character in new who... hes just brilliant!! (Cant wait to see your reaction to what's to come with him...)
lozhallett1 RIGHT?!! 😃
Definately!!!!👍👍
Get ready for a lot of intense, action packed episodes.
the girls are back for the great doctor who. so glad to see them back.
I love watching you guys. You get emotional and that get's me emotional. Where were girls like you when I was growing up??? LOL Looking forward to this new season with the two of you.
I’ve been waiting for this one, this season is my fave cause it is fun. And the return of rose tyler, brilliant, Paula’s reaction was hilarious. rose who? 😂😂😂😂
The adipose are adorable. Wilf is the greatest.
Bernard Cribbins who now plays her grandfather was in the Christmas special he played the newspaper vendor

The girls: 'DO we?'
Me: 'You mean: WHO we?' 😉
airmail dolphin HAHAHA!!! 🤣
ROSEEEEEEEEEEEE
Oh how I've waited for this!
Einar Sigurðsson ❤️ you Einar!
Seeing Wilf there... Oh Bernard, you were a legend. You still are.
God the reaction to Rose was on point 😂 pretty much my reaction only less excited giggling and jumping.
I will say right now this season is my fave. I freaking love Donna and oh yeah, PATREON PEOPLE! The full reactions are so much better lol
I can't tell you how much we appreciate that support from you! Thank you so much!!
The guy who died was Donna's father, not her grandfather, so they didn't have him playing the same character.
No spoilers, but Donna is my favorite companion. Tennant and Tate are an awesome team.
The Doctor and Donna re-meet by doing the same thing: they walk through the front door and act like they belong, which is how Donna proves she’s the perfect companion - she can adapt easily enough.
Here comes the best companion
To anyone who hated Donna, tis' the season of redemption.
Hold your horses I still hate her with a passion. She's just slightly worse than Rose. Terrible.

10: I don't have time to keep secrets.
13: Hold my distrust.
(Yes I say series not season, I'm British, I watched this show growing up, leave me alone)
haha we'll forgive you ;)
@@PaulaDeming firstly: OMG PAULA REPLIED!
secondly: haha thanks 😁
@@bbsj86 :D
Not sure if I agree with Katrina saying the show gets better as it goes along. This series is as good as it gets!
Beautiful ladies, great episode. Well done!
I'm soo happy you two are back! :). You're both so awesome! :)
Not a weak episode in this series....Paula will need therapy by the end of it
Btw where do u get the episodes from? I cant find dvds/blurays of the full seasons...
Ah, brilliant, these videos keep getting better and better!
Bernard cribbins was always her grandfather, the guy from runaway bride, im pretty sure was her father, its said later that her father died, and her grandfather wasn’t at the wedding because he was ill
Priceless reaction to Rose. Had to rewind and most that again a few times.
The actor who passed away played her father not her grandfather.
A cat person? Read, if you can find a copy, Invasion of the Cat-People by Gary Russell. 2nd Doctor, Ben and Polly.
When Katrina said "I love all the companions", is that including or not including the classics?
Of course!! I love Classic Who and the companions from that time 😍
If you watch their earlier Who reactions, you'll discover that Katrina is a font of Who knowledge - both New AND Classic :)
ian smith That’s good, because classic Who is way better than new Who.😁
Dalek Sram it really isn’t. Only those looking back with rose tinted specs think so. It wouldn’t hold up for a modern audience, and I’m not just talking about special effects.
@@dajtoad1 TBH, I'm more of a Gerry Anderson fan than a Doctor Who fan.
Finally Season 4, welcome to what many consider the best season along with season 7. I can't wait to see your reactions to this season :)
My favorite RUclips personalities! Plus, Who and Trek are like my 2 favorite things! Now I want to watch retro Doctor Who with people who are modern Doctor Who fans.
3:43 no the actor who died played her dad.
And so it begins!😊
And so begins the beat season of NuWho...
