So, she has been trained. I love her voice. I almost cry when I hear her sing on old recordings. The loss of most of that voice is one of the most tragic things ever to happen in the realm of music, I think.

it's nice to notice how her voice gets lower as time goes by. it was SO high in her teenage years, then it was absolutely flawless at her Broadway/movie star years, and here it's more grown up, less "coloratura soprano". she sounds almost like a mezzo. wonderful still. wish she could sing nowadays. In this instance, however, when I heard her pronounce 'excelsis' in this song like 'ihks-CHEL-sihs' instead of 'ehks-shEHL-sees' (which, correct me if I'm wrong, is the correct way to pronounce it), my tongue caught in my throat; I've always been taught to pronounce it 'ehks-shehl-sees'.
I happen to be a linguist, thus my Latin is not bad, though naturally I don't speak it fluently. There are several types of Latin pronunciation; in one, "v" is pronounced the way it is in English, in another as "w" (salve/salwe). What I was taught was to pronounce "x" always as "ks", like in "excellent". That's how it is taught in Poland, where I am from. Bene vale :)

Trust me it is. My choir teacher is making me sing this song and it took me like 5 tries to get that part all in one breath.
