  • Professor P.L.O Lumumba speaks to the issue of corruption in Africa, pointing out that at the heart of the African development challenge is poor leadership. He critiques democracy, as a potential tool for propagating the post colonial project which is the exploitation of Africa and its resources. He also calls for a regime where elections in Africa is devoid of bribery.

Prof. Lumumba is one of his kind on the African soil. His inspiring and eloquent presentation of Africa is great and very inspiring. I do agree with professor that Africa is the cause of the African problems. I still believe that Africa is not yet close to solving her problems, not in the 21st Century. A German philosopher by the name Hegel once said that history repeats itself and despite all the struggle for independence from colonists were are now back to another difficult episode for the continent. Prof. should guide us to how we can develop new crop of leaders. Where is the problem?

Paul, Listening to your interview saddens my heart more about the future of Ghana and perhaps Africa. We have such a brain in front of you and all you do is ask about past and history? We need questions that point to concrete ideas about building the new Africa. The hour is wasted talking of history and past that we already know. What critical ideas did you elicit from this great mind?

    • @JamesENjeruN

The only way to understand the present, is to look into the past. I think it is a very insightful interview. History, accurate history is the only best kickstarter to a better tomorrow. It allows one to understand why the present is the way it is.

Appreciating the vision of Prof. Lumumba I would really question the African renaissance and how long Africa still needs to wait to get the right leadership. Prof. Lumumba once attempted to get into the Kenyan politics but he was disappointed by the system that does not tolerate such brains. Africa is not yet fully liberated from the world powers and we must still consider Africa as culturally colonized. Leaders are also products of a none developing culture. Our problem first is that we hate our own cultural identity and the Professor is one of those who perpetuate what was once a Western interpretation of the African failure. He is not speaking to the Africans but to the Westerns.

...Don't forget South Sudan. When Riek Machar was fired from vice-president position, he collected his army, formed a rebellion and killed the Dinka Bor people. The Dinka then retaliated and things became ugly across South Sudan. In fact, that was the second time Riek Machar has done that. John Garang was alive during the first rebellion in 1991. My father was among Riek's victims in 1991. So, African democracy isn't really a democracy for some African nations. I'm proud of those African nations that are trying to educate their young generations so that we may weed out corruption in Africa. This is an insightful interview. Well done!

Like South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, DR Congo, Burundi etc. Otherwise corruption will continue to reign in Afrika.

Shida ya Kenya si raia wake ni viongozi wake. There are some intricate cartels in the Kenyan government that would not let him do anything substantive within the borders (other than giving lectures). He was once appointed to head the Kenya anti-corruption commission, but that glorious tenure was shortlived. He started probing deep into the state and realized his employer was calpable. The commission was degazetted and rebranded into Ethics and anti-corruption commission, the effect of which all it's independent commissioners lost their jobs. Very convenient if you ask me. Tuiombee Kenya watu wake waamke wajipiganie.

Ndugu Lumumba, kidogo kidogo hujaza kibaba(Kiswahili proverb). Ndugu, every little positive word or sentence you say or write will always have an impact. You have inspired me to speak up about what I feel is wright or wrong. However, I tend to speak about what is right rather than speaking about what is wrong. Why? Because I think we, humans are stupid by nature but what balances Humanity is the degree of stupidity...in other words...Good always cancell out the evil. There are always agents of evil working each and every day trying to destroy the Agents of Good, Possitivity, Peace, Love, Unity, and Human Development. All that is visible online...on tweeter, facebook, youtube and more. Ndugu Lumumba, please, prepare our young generation for the "unkowned worlds" out there. I will do my part here in Canada. I'm a South Sudanese-Canadian from the Lost Boys of Sudan. I know, humans are kind by nature but some are more kinder. Education is knowledge, "that used to be the motto of Moi University, Eldoret" when I was in grade 3 in 1993. Walimu wetu walitufunza lugha ya Kiswahili kabisa, lakini mimi nilikua mkimbizi kutoka Sudan. Kiswahili was a foreign language to us Refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp by then. We just came in April of 1992 and knew nothing the language and culture. The only culture we.knew was ours, the Dinka Bor Culture. Other Sudanese had their cultures. At first, there was lots of peace but as we interacted with other cultures, conflicts began to arise. My Thesis that got me the scholarship to study in Canada was entitled "Conflicts in Kakuma Refugee Camp: Causes and Recommendations". I did an extensive interviews with community leaders. I even did an interview with one of the local tribeman, the Turkana. He used to call me Garang even though he knew my name but I started to like the name Garang because John Garang was my tribesman. In a nutshell, our humanity supersedes our tribal egos. We Africans MUST learn from the past in order to build a better future for our children.

INTERESTING HOW THIS DISCOURSE IS RELEVANT TODAY. THE POLITICAL PARTY IS ONLY A VEHICLE TO WHICH POLICY STRATEGY AND DIRECTION ARE ARTICULATED.

Paul...please, PLO knows Kenya. If you begin your political campaign with handouts, you have to maintain it with handouts. People have to be committed to a cause and not to whatever temporary gratification they can get

Around the 34 - 35 minute mark, the host makes an error with the Liberian presidential term. It is two 6-year terms; not the first 6 and the second 4 as he said..

Lamii Kpargoi you're right! Liberia has six years for each term.
