  • This webinar brought together experts from our Children’s Rights Group and Climate and Environmental Justice Group for a webinar that will feature a series of expert rapid responses to the seminal rulings on climate change issued by the European Court of Human Rights’ Grand Chamber in Verein Klimaseniorinnen Schweiz and Others v. Switzerland, Carême v. France, and Duarte Agostinho and Others v. Portugal and 32 Others, which was delivered on April 9th.
The webinar were joined by Margherita Cornaglia, Academic Expert Professor Aoife Nolan, Harj Narulla, Krishnendu Mukherjee and Gerry Liston, Senior Lawyer with GLAN who instructed counsel on behalf of the Duarte Agostinho applicants. The webinar was chaired by Tatyana Eatwell.
The experts explored crucial issues raised by these decisions, including the extent of ECHR rights obligations concerning climate change (particularly those related to Articles 2, 3 and 8), discrimination, the rights of children and future generations, and standing.
The webinar also discussed the impacts of these decisions on State obligations to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and the implications for current and future climate litigation at the national, regional, and international levels.
