This song and Asleep in the Light by Keith Green are two songs I describe as "kick us in the butt" songs. I could listen to them over and over. We as God's children need to internalize this and start living it. Less "what can you do for me God?" and more "what can I do for you?" And always done in love. Love for God and then love for others.
Ya! It's based of Amos 5: 21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!
I was just reading Amos 5:21-27 today for the first time. I immediately recognized it from this song, which I haven't heard in years. I just remembered how the lyrics struck me.
This song wasn’t meant as a sword or condemnation, it’s literally a passage of Scripture put to song. The point is not that the “worship” is loud or noisy, it’s that there’s blood on their hands. That they stopped the flood of justice, that there was no righteous living. I’ve been in traditional Methodist services, they’re just as carefully planned and have just as much potential for “just going through the motions” as Hillsong or Church of the Highlands. I’ve been in Baptist services just as rowdy as a Young and Free concert. God isn’t tied to our own western traditions of what is or isn’t “holy” music. If the song is what you think worship is, you’re worshipping music.
Yeah, I think they’d love it. Biblical worship is loud, that’s why God calls their useless worship “noisy” in the Bible- they did everything the “right” way but with the wrong heart. Hillsong is tame compared to what David did.
