    Interesting, I bought this powermeter initially based on gplama’s review (after the find my update) but wasn’t happy about its seemingly high power readings even when compared to my kicker v6. Appeared to be a faulty unit and they replaced it under warranty after I contacted them but have not been able to trust the power readings. Seemed to always report higher than the kicker. Later bought the Assioma Mx dual sided based on the reviews and trust their readings much more. Your channel is such high value for us consumers. Thanks for your work. I’ve experienced first hand how much work it is to record this data and compare it. Most mortals don’t have access to multiple power meters to compare the accuracy. This might explain my high readings I still have. Since I mostly ride gravel.

      You're always going to lose power between the crank and the rear freehub because drivetrains are not 100% efficient. You can lose 5w just from the drivetrain lube type and cleanliness alone, for example. Also, if you're talking about a single sided PM, and that side is your dominant leg... Also worth mentioning that kickrs smooth power A LOT.

    I love my Stages GRX left side power meter! I was going to send in my drive-side in, but the company went belly up before I had a chance. I haven't paid super close attention, but I haven't had any apparent power reporting issues, regardless of terrain.
    Now, I'm leaning towards the new Favero Assioma pedals to get L/R reporting to help with monitoring recovery from total knee replacement surgery.
    Thanks for all your great research and informative (and fun!) videos.

    Many Thanks! Another great deep dive video; we all appreciate the time you put into the testing and video editing. Anything on the technical side preventing a rider from just mounting a SRAM/Quark PM crankset with a Shimano drivetrain? I've had 4+ SRAM Quark PM cranksets and they just work out of the box and to my knowledge their reliability has been proven by GPLama, DC Rainmaker and others testing PMs. Whether it be 4iiii, stages or Shimano, so many seem to have issues; the SRAM doesn't. Kudos to those Assioma pedals, which also seem to just work flawlessly as verified by several reviewers.

    I had a grx 3+ and it was completely unsuited to wet gravel conditions. Also the warranty isn’t worth the paper it’s written on as 4iiii aren't easy to deal with (from the uk anyway).
    I also have a precision integra and that was fine but it rarely got wet so no idea if would be the same outcome.
    I swapped to favero mx-pro (which had only just gone out and was seemingly the only viable option)and have never been happier. So far so good, and you don’t need to calibrate and it’s waterproofness is rock solid.

    Since a few month, I've get stage gen 3 left powermeter (just before their bankrupt). The battery seems to hold 60 to 80 hours. About the cadence, you have the choice between internal gyroscope or sensor + magnet (off road purpose) which drain more battery. I'm using the magnet, and it's work fine for my usage (mix offroad and road)

  • @gadsgsadgsadg4668

    I had a one-sided Precision 3+ power meter that died after few months (drained coin batteries like crazy in weeks instead of promised 800 hours of actual use). The warranty replacement unit failed in similar way after only a couple of months. I used the crank indoors and on road in dry conditions. A painful and slow warranty replacement process with the company. Luckily I got my money back and ended up with Favero pedals instead.

      The precision 2 was plagued with phantom-drain too because of that damn chipolo tracking that you couldn't turn off and nobody ever actually used. I have to replace the battery every few months whether I use it or not. I hope they drop this tracking gimmick on the precision 4...

  • @LongbranchOlivetti
    @LongbranchOlivetti 28 дней назад +12

    It's worth noting that the FindMy function on the 3+ does not work in the same way as an AirTag, as advertised by 4iiii. The powermeter uses simple GPS to determine if the bike is being ridden. Or in other words, if the bike is inside the van of the criminal who just stole it, and the van is moving, the device is in powermeter mode, not FindMy mode. FindMy is only activated 4 minutes after the powermeter stops moving on GPS. I had my Precision 3 upgraded to +, which meant sending it to Canada from the UK, but when I demonstrated that the FindMy function was being missold, 4iiii acknowledged this and gave me a refund. I'm only saying this so that other people know not to expect their 3+ to work exactly like an AirTag.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  28 дней назад +3

      It’d be interesting to know exactly what causes it to switch modes. I’d hope general moment (not rotation) would keep it in Find My beacon mode.

    • @LongbranchOlivetti
      @LongbranchOlivetti 28 дней назад +6

      @@gplama This is what I was eventually told by 4iiii after a stressful and unnecessary amount of back and forth:
      "The key difference between the PRECISION 3+ and a regular AirTag is that the PRECISION 3+ cannot be a Find My device all the time, unlike an AirTag. As it is a dual purpose device, powermeter and Find My device, it does not act as a Find My device when the powermeter is in powermeter mode. It will be in powermeter mode anytime the gyroscope in the powermeter detects movement. Movement is essentially anytime the powermeter is physically moving, regeardless if it is specifically being ridden as a powermeter. The powermeter has to sit stationary for 4 minutes for it to switch into Find My mode and start broadcasting to the Find My network."
      So even though the gyroscope is able to accurately measure cadence, it somehow can't differentiate between rotation and linear movement.

    • @viljamip
      @viljamip 28 дней назад +4

      @@LongbranchOlivetti not 100% sure but I think that mode switching with movement is a requirement Apple has set for all third party Find my devices. Airtag doesn’t have to follow this rule as it has the speaker to warn someone if they are moving and Airtag which is not nearby its owner. If the third party device doesn’t have a speaker, they try to mitigate stalking by this rule I guess. While its impractical to sneak a power meter to someone’s purse to stalk them, I guess someone could install it to someone elses bike. Anyway, Apple’s rules and Apple doesn’t like to do exceptions.

    • @LongbranchOlivetti
      @LongbranchOlivetti 28 дней назад +4

      @@viljamip Yep, you’re absolutely right, it is Apple’s 3rd party rules, 4iiii told me this. My gripe is that 4iiii don’t state this in any of the Precision 3+ literature; they say only that it works exactly like an AirTag. It is misleading. 10 months ago when going through this with them, I suggested they amend the marketing, but they have so far failed to do so.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  28 дней назад +1

      Thinking more on this - Not having it beacon as a ‘AirTag’ while moving means it’s unlikely to trigger the stalking alerts. In the event someone is moving with an unknown ‘AirTag’, they’ll get a notification one has been moving with them when they reach a commonly frequented destination such as home or work. If the 4iiii implementation doesn’t register as ‘moving with’ and only beacons when stationary, this could potentially be a better operation in some instances. Hmm.🤔

As you can imagine it’s neither a quick nor cheap process. However, I settled on 4iiii on the basis of its accuracy and the bonus of the AirTag. It’s disappointing to see your review noting these shortfalls. Nonetheless, always a good report by yourself and for me thanks for flagging this with 4IIII. Hopefully, by the time I get mine back the false-positives of when powered down might be resolved. If not, it’s a liveable problem I can live with. Its like a sign telling me what i need to do. I will have to test coasting on my interval rides. Did you test any precision 3 non plus to see if this occurs or is it only the 3+? I'd guess it would also happen on the 3 non plus but maybe something went wrong when adding the air tag functionality.

    My grx meter was always unreliable. I’ve had to stop multiple times during rides to calibrate. Cadence didn’t seem quite right and power was grossly wrong. I could be pushing hard and only reading zone 1 and sometimes barely pushing and getting high numbers. Last straw was when it was reading a fixed reading of 900 watts when soft pedaling then would drop out all together with no cadence reading then jump right back over 1000 watts. Calibrating and completely unpairing then re pairing did nothing. Tossed in the parts bin after that and switched to sram. Real shame, my road arm with the old sensor was always solid.

    In this instance your suspect the frame flex and vibration is more than any crank-based PM could handle and your pedal based PMs have a whole bunch of unique problems of their own - so hardly comparable. Now that's not to say 4iiii is perfect, I have had to return a defective conversion product in the past , but contrary to your experience, the folks from Alberta Canada were incredibly responsive and a replacement was on my bike within 9 days - they admitted to an error in adapting the crank arm I sent, so provided a brand new one instead..and since not problem! The bottom line is I have concerns about your credibility and motivation; you seem to be in the pockets of Chinese manufacturers.
