I just wanted to say how happy I was seeing the reactions on last weeks Conveyor Belt Video! I wanted to make another kind of video showing things actually working. Its fun filming beauty shots of the Marble Machine X, it just looks cool from any angle. It has been a huge part of the design process to try to achieve that. So many times I took a tougher road design-wise, to keep moving parts visible and so on. The easiest would have been a MIDI keyboard and a computer, we took another route with this one :). Thank you for all the high fives in the comments, I was really touched by it and it is a huge motivation forward that helps me to cross this elusive finishing line.
Are we going to see a video of it all being mounted on the machine? We havent seen a video of the pistons and the ratchet stairs being made and mounted. As far as i know
Martin, by God, make sure you put witness marks on all those pipes so you know which goes where if you haven't already. I can't imagine the headache of trying to figure which ones go where!

@Wintergatan , Considering that Electricians bend PVC pipes (in the past) etcetera. I can say from experience, that the bend radius should preferably stay within the radius of the pipes width/diameter. So, if you have a 21 in the outer diameter. For a good and clean bend, you should have around 21 in the U-bend. Of course, a tighter may be possible. But you have much more risk of running into that "crinkle" issue. Something that novice electricians experience a lot when bending normal Copper cables. Pressing two thumbs against one another and bending from that angle, with an even pressure, works generally the best. Basically, the thumbs work as a 'support' to as you pivot the wrists inward. Minimum bend radii are generally set to preserve strength and wall thickness. In any sort of pressure application, at least a 4d radius is recommended, and 5d is preferred, though the exact value varies up with certain material types and such. In conduit applications, the main two considerations are not stressing the cable jacket too much, and being able to pull cable (if you're not pre-running it). There's more to it, of course, as you know. But Martin is not putting much load at all on the tubes, nor is he carrying anything that could be damaged with too tight a bend. As long as the marble can easily pass through, then the tube will serve well. What I would think might be most beneficial is to work on getting the preheat absolutely perfect. One trick Martin may not have considered is a hot sand bed. Basically, you make a small metal box with fine, uniform sand in it, and holes in the bottom connected to an air manifold. The heat gun(s) blow air into the manifold, which 'fluidize' the sand bed with hot air. Use a bleed off of the manifold to control the air into the bed, and you should be able to reach an equilibrium temperature very controllably. That way he doesn't have to vary the distance from direct heat to control intensity. He can simply plunge the parts into the bed to preheat them, and get a controllable, uniform, and easy preheat every time. I've seen it used for a few applications, but I'm not aware of a commercially sold tool for the purpose.
@@TheSpacecraftX Basically what Geo Y said. At the bottom of the U, it rounds off. Generally, as a rule of thumb. You don't bend a cable or a PVC pipe a smaller radius than its diameter. Of course, generally you are much kinder with copper cables. Since, tighter bends increases resistance of said area. But regarding PVC pipes, it is a way of avoiding crinkling which is Ugly. Since PVC pipe bending and Acrylic bending is very similar. Just, we tend to use a metal spring to assist in the bending while he uses a silicone tube that provides a cleaner end result. It is all about practice in the end. So, if you do U-bend like Martin is doing, leave about the pipes width in between, and the chances of crinkling will lessen drastically. It will also look much cleaner and professional. Since the bend will look more natural.
One of my favorite parts of these videos is when you can hear Martin's smile while he's explaining something like the stud welded prototype. For some reason that always makes me very happy.

Even though I like the black programming plates better based on their looks and flexibility, I think having a pre-programmed song on hand during concerts would save a LOT of time. So yeah, this collab could potentially save years from your life haha
A shinny well polished sheet of metal for live performance could be interesting in terms of visual effects. Put a beam of light on it and "voila" light show. Would be awesome if the plate could be faceted, it would act as a disco ball maybe. The sheet could also be printed with funky psychedelic patterns. I'm sure Martin creative as he is could come up with nice graphics to put on it.
I think the metal looks awesome and is cleaner looking then the million empty holes in the rubber. It also allows you to have even more songs programmed since it should be easier to have them made vs drilling all the holes and manual programming. More songs is better, after all the work put into making this instrument it would be a shame to only have 2-3 songs!
@@h82fail You don't have to drill new plates for each song though, it's just that he would need to set up the song before intermissions. Which could take a lot of time.

The whole process of getting here has been such a wild ride ranging from country to country, dragon slaying, success failure and success... Cannot wait to see more of the build process. Lol... Real Acyrl Tubes need +160°C for Bending... And Water can only be max 100°C (if you are not in a Pressure chamber). So you cant Bend Acryl Tubes with hot Water! Maybe you use PETG Tubes or something like that... there you need only a Temperature 70°C+, that would be possible.
@@rrdrone90 There is no problem heating up water to 160°C. Water boils at 100°C but that doesn't mean that at 101°C all the water just instantly evaporates. I heated up water numerous times above 160°C on electric stoves in the lab, so no fancy bunsen burner.
Well, just use a liquid with a high boiling point like cooking oil. So unless these liquids react with the tube at high temperatures, I don’t see the problem.
Here in the USA, The Union Pacific Railroad has been restoring a giant steam locomotive that everyone thought was too big to restore. Their goal is to drive it from Cheyenne, WY to Ogden UT for the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad. On Saturday, they cancelled the entire excursion of their smaller steam locomotive to concentrate on getting the larger one finished. Six days left, and they still hadn't installed the new pistons or connecting rods. It always takes 10 times longer than you anticipate! Everybody that makes anything experiences this. Keep going Martin. WE BELIEVE!
I really need to express myself. I've been following this project more or less since it began. In the beginning, I thought it would not work. The process seemed to be very slow and it looked like it wasn't going anywhere, I didn't believe that a guy who is now living somewhere in France alone would have the physical and emotional strength to create such an amazing project. But I was wrong, and I want to thank you very much for helping me understand that, I had never followed a process of creating such a detailed machine and your videos really opened up my eyes. Normally in social media, everything seems to be quick and made with no effort, but your videos showed the reality that exists behind everything and made me understand that most of the things I see take a long time to do. I don't know if I explained myself very well but in conclusion, I just want to say thank you for all of the inspiration that you give to me, and of course all of the community that follows you.

Third (on the main thread) ! On the uh... stud welding... 0.0 holy moly. That would perfectly suit your system on tour!!! However, I'd recommend blue-tempered or some sort of black oxide stainless steel if you are going to have it on stage. The reason would be for the dark background it would provide... shiny stainless would probably ruin that aesthetic. The black background really rounds out the contrast of the contraption! (Never thought I'd be able to form a phrase that... apt...)
I vehemently agree, having such a bright, reflective material would ruin the asthetic balance between the warm wood, the silver marbles, and the clear pipes.
I really, really, really want to see this thing working live, can't wait for the world tour. I'm sure the feeling is 1000 time stronger for you. Keep it up, and just know that we're all excited too.

Thank you for this today. There is something so peaceful about your videos. It helps me to find my calm. I found out that my aunt, a woman that was like a second mother to me, passed away this morning. I'm in turmoil and feeling lost, but your video lessened the pain a small amount.

I would recommend making wooden curves for various angles or one that's adjustable that you could set the pipe into while you bend it. That way you have perfect smooth curves every time.
That would be excellent to build multiple machines, OR if every pipe had to be more precise. But 38 jigs to make 38 parts seems excessive. There also is no guarantee that it'll work. As a jig is made, then the pipe, both parts have to be removed to do the next one, so there's no reference to the previous piece as the one is made. Given the result, a calibrated eyeball is often good enough even in this age of supertechnology.
I have been waiting for poster since I saw the T-shirt !! Your work inspire me so much that I want to be able to look at it when I look up from my work as well and keep going to acheive my goal. Hey, to prevent such unfortunate cases where you're forced into the sunlight by some marble rolling down the stairs, could you maybe put some thin magnetic sheet over the top step, which would grab marbles before they roll down? Or do they carry too much kinetic energy to be stopped by such a solution?

I just called it the marvel machine in my head because its astounding how cool this is and the fact all these different people contributing to it and its growing this art peace almost as an organic celebration of human ingenuity and cooperation. It's so inspiring and beautiful and to know its a functioning piece and is an astounding accomplishment .We are now all saying .World tour, world tour, world tour, we are all rooting for you. and watching the process is so enjoyable. I was thinking the same thing and looking for this exact comment. I'm affraid it would affect the music, if he ca not compensate the different "runtimes" of the different channels on the programming wheel. The asjustable clutch from a couple weeks ago can only compensate for the difference in different bpm of all the channels. But I might recall that there is another tuning mechanism in the marble releases to compensate for the individual channels. Please elaborate on that. You are one of a few of this generation! Thank you!
@Wintergatan: I have a question: the way through the different pipes is not equal, so the way down will last longer for some Marbles than for others. Does this affect the timing?
The release mechanism that drops the ball is after the pipe, and triggers a new ball to traverse the pipe and "stage" for the next release. Only becomes an issue if trying to drop two balls within less time than it takes a ball to make the trip, and that led Martin to two channels per note.
I did it. I finally caught up with the series. It took me 4 weeks of heavy youtube IV drip directly to the eyeballs but I made it. So excited to see how far this has come.

At work we use hot water to bend pipes. Since it gives even heat and there is no problems with accidental bubbles due to too much heat

On the uh... stud welding... 0.0 holy moly. That would perfectly suit your system on tour!!! However, I'd recommend blue-tempered or some sort of black oxide stainless steel if you are going to have it on stage. The reason would be for the dark background it would provide... shiny stainless would probably ruin that aesthetic. The black background really rounds out the contrast of the contraption! (Never thought I'd be able to form a phrase that... apt...)

dequinox yes this! Black oxide would look so awesome! Perhaps they could even make different tempers to have different colours for different songs?
You could even laser-etch a custom image into it and/or drill holes though it, putting leds inside to make it truly look like a wintergatan!
I vehemently agree, having such a bright, reflective material would ruin the asthetic balance between the warm wood, the silver marbles, and the clear pipes.
I really, really, really want to see this thing working live, can't wait for the world tour. I'm sure the feeling is 1000 time stronger for you. Keep it up, and just know that we're all excited too.

I would recommend making wooden curves for various angles or one that's adjustable that you could set the pipe into while you bend it. That way you have perfect smooth curves every time.
That would be excellent to build multiple machines, OR if every pipe had to be more precise. But 38 jigs to make 38 parts seems excessive.
There also is no guarantee that it'll work. As a jig is made, then the pipe, both parts have to be removed to do the next one, so there's no reference to the previous piece as the one is made.
Given the result, a calibrated eyeball is often good enough even in this age of supertechnology.
It's crazy that the original Marble Machine was only a prototype for this beast. No compromises, it's a gorgeous work of engineering and art.

Hey, to prevent such unfortunate cases where you're forced into the sunlight by some marble rolling down the stairs, could you maybe put some thin magnetic sheet over the top step, which would grab marbles before they roll down? Or do they carry too much kinetic energy to be stopped by such a solution?

I just called it the marvel machine in my head because its astounding how cool this is and the fact all these different people contributing to it and its growing this art peace almost as an organic celebration of human ingenuity and cooperation. It's so inspiring and beautiful and to know its a functioning piece and is an astounding accomplishment .We are now all saying .World tour, world tour, world tour, we are all rooting for you. and watching the process is so enjoyable. We can all feel a little part of it. I have to get on the patrion bandwagon here.
Some marble spend more time in the pipe (because all the pipe are not the same length). Can this cause a problem for the rhythm of the music ?
I was thinking the same thing and looking for this exact comment. I'm affraid it would affect the music, if he ca not compensate the different "runtimes" of the different channels on the programming wheel. The asjustable clutch from a couple weeks ago can only compensate for the difference in different bpm of all the channels. But I might recall that there is another tuning mechanism in the marble releases to compensate for the individual channels. Please elaborate on that. You are one of a few of this generation! Thank you!

It feels like it's not even been a month, You have done so much progress that it's nearly unbelieveable.
@Wintergatan: I have a question: the way through the different pipes is not equal, so the way down will last longer for some Marbles than for others. Does this affect the timing?
The release mechanism that drops the ball is after the pipe, and triggers a new ball to traverse the pipe and "stage" for the next release. Only becomes an issue if trying to drop two balls within less time than it takes a ball to make the trip, and that led Martin to two channels per note.
I did it. I finally caught up with the series. It took me 4 weeks of heavy youtube IV drip directly to the eyeballs but I made it. So excited to see how far this has come.
