For those who don't know, the blower (roots blower) on the thunderbolt basically supplies air at a high volume to the siren. This does two things for it: A) It magnifies the sound, since more air is running through the chopper and B) Provides constant amounts of air during it's entire running. One problem other sirens have is that because of how they work, they get quieter when the wind down during the attack signal (the alternative high and low, also called wail now); the blower circumvents this and that is one of the most defining features of the thunderbolt. The low point in the signal, when the pitch drives down, is the one where most people recall hearing it because it carries outwards forever. High sounds penetrate, while low ones carry. The thunderbolt is only one of two sirens that were like this ACA, a competitor of Federal Signal who made the thunderbolt, made the hurricane. Together these sirens are classified as Supercharged sirens because of the roots blower that supplies the air.
I live next door to this guy and now I am deaf. My dog is deaf. My cat I'm pretty sure is deaf. I'll find out for sure when I am able to scrape her off the ceiling!
Sirens are typically tested at a particular day and time, most places tend to do the first Saturday at noon, and if you hear it outside of testing time, it's probably an emergency. if an emergency happened during testing time, I guess they' switch to a different signal to indicate an emergency.
I've always wondered how loud the T-bolt is without the blower running. Given I hear the relay for the chopper motor trip on and off a few times, I'd say that it's not that obnoxious without the blower!
Imagine hearing that Attack sound during a tornado warning. It would be so scary everyone would be in their basements\storm shelters already. Also, I can see why there was no blower run for this test. No blower belts.
Definitely it's not a toy but why not. Looks like a good backup if one of city sirens fails or went trashed. Just like this one lol ruclips.net/video/GunlZXQMFv4/видео.html
We used to have alarms with choppers here in Sweden in the past, but nowadays we only run pneumatic horns from Kockum Sonics. Search for "Hesa Fredrik" here on YT and you will find tests of it. It's very rarely used for real situations, but the do a countrywide test run 4 times a year. It can sometimes be used for large fires or spills (there was a sulphuric acid spill in Helsingborg a couple of years ago when it was used, for example), but it's extremely rare.
The Thunderbolt 1000T I cannot find anywhere. Can an ordinary person buy one and if so, what are the installation and operational requirements in doing so?
I love it! As a kid in the 60s I would dive under the coffee table as my Dad said the commies are coming, the commies are coming! I wish I had a Thunderbolt!
Hmmmmm, I might need one of these instead of the hand cranked one I was thinking about, I live in a pretty rural area with no sirens and a tornado came up on us about 250 yards from the house last year, and about 100 foot from my neighbor's house, so I would need something to warn my neighbors since I monitor weather 24/7 and practically never sleep.
I live in Holyoke Massachusetts and there’s a world war 2 air raid siren it’s the super sirex or something like that it’s so loud you can hear it throughout the entire city and it doesn’t even rotate
"Your neighbors must love you." It can be true, especially in cases like my area where we have quiet sirens that sometimes don't even go off. my county sends everyone a special weather radio that only goes off for my county, and most people tend to disable them because the batteries they use are rechargeable and tend to fail, resulting in the thing beeping every 2 minutes 24/7. So most people in my area tend to step outside when the sirens go off to hear the siren tell what type of warning it is. It's particularly quiet in my neighborhood because the closest siren is busted.
That must hurt your eardrums but your neighbors must love you when you hear a tornado siren of any kind just sound that big ol baby no really I love Thunderbolt sirens you're so awesome
It's kinda ironic how they have been straying away with all of these mechanical sirens because of maintenance and convenience cost to service them and being cheaper to just broadcast it on tv, but by getting rid of these what if something really was to happen and tv and regular power gets knocked out and we can't watch tv. So, how are they to alert people of something? It's sad how we're becoming to complacent and dependent on computer technology. I know these air raid sirens were hooked up to a regular back up generator for that purpose if power does go out, but about the Emergency Broadcast System on the tv is what gets me and you won't be able to depend on cell phone service either to get the word out; 9-11 in New York proved that with cell phones going down to people who needed to call in and call out. I used to know of a some state land that I used to pass going along I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson where the entire state of Arizona had dumped all of their Emergency Air Raid sirens from the whole state and piled them up in the desert to rot away. Some lucky person here on RUclips shared his story on how he got lucky and was granted access by the state to scrounge up a couple for his collection to restore.
There is a device for this exact reason. A weather radio. Buy one. Sirens are meant for warning people outdoors only, not to alert people in buildings.
Logan's Reactions Yes. Regulations state that you cannot sound your siren when there is a storm nearby, however, you can activate yours if the county's are activated.
There are no regulations directly referring to use of sirens. Now you can't just set them off whenever you want. Only during tests or other sanctioned events. I have permission to sound my siren(s) in my tiny town during monthly tests.
Play the Emergency Broadcast System tone (the scary one) in the middle of the night, then activate this thing before setting off exploding targets in the woods nearby. Your neighbors would either have PTSD or put in institutions afterward.
That siren will hide the sound of the gunshots when the rest of your neighborhood pays you a visit
If I was your neighbor I would love that siren.
No really, thunderbolts rock.
me too
Hey your the back up if one of the towns siren's fail
try running it with the blower
Derek Wall he did run it with the blower

He collects them as a hobby
