    i appreciate how real your renovations are. there are channels with big budgets that crush through renovations in weeks and create unrealistic expectations on the average person with a modest budget. thank you for showing us the beauty of the slow and steady.

    • @old_school_moaboa

      Thank you for saying this :-) I had a budget to start with, but I spent most of this on tools and buying new waching machines and stuff like this that broke down the first year. I hope this channel will generate enough in maybe a year to be able to do more costly things that is needed, for now I need to focus on what I CAN do something about :-)

    Don’t do the rods, they will make more cracks. You have a water problem, the gutters are not adequate. It may pay to put in better ones or install French drains. It may help to put up barriers around areas where the water flows into the house foundations. Like down a hill flowing toward the house. You may want to plant water drinking plants to block the flow, weeping willows are heavy drinkers.

    • @old_school_moaboa
      @old_school_moaboa  9 дней назад +2

      I don't understand what it is you don't think I should do? The rods? I think the loose stone is due to water damage in the past, before I hung up new gutters there they were broken. But the new ones I hung up is not as close to the end of the tiles as the previous ones so I need to place a piece of metal sheet (there are ones sold made especially for this purpose) to lead the roof water from the tiles into the gutter. But the problem is also I think the trees growing along the facade with their roots. Also to repoint the foundation also below ground.

    Dear Moa, your to-do list is formidable! One suggestion regarding your plans for planting roses...I would not plant along the foundation until the foundation is stabilized, as moving the newly planted plants would be stressful on you and the plant material. Why not plant a few roses/plants in large containers for this year, so you have flowers to enjoy, and once the foundation is repaired, then transplant from the containers to the ground. And remember, roses require full sun. Best of luck! XX

    • @old_school_moaboa
      @old_school_moaboa  5 дней назад

      Thanks for the tips! The stabilizations won't require any digging so I'm not so worried about it. Repointing however is another matter but I don't mind digging up a couple of bushes if it can save me from years from watering (it's a very sun exposed place and if the roses are in seperate containers they will need daily watering when it's warm and sunny

    You've certainly set yourself some goals for this year. Just in case - please try not to stress if you think you're not going to get to do everything that you've set for yourself. It's renovating - the unexpected (*shit*) happens when renovating, which throws the timeframe out the window. Looking forward to seeing it progress. You're doing a great job, considering you're doing the majority of it yourself.

    I love all your plans! Thank you for sharing with us all - it's exciting & is going to be a lot of work - I have great faith in you & know you'll do a great job! You showed the areas around the house that you will put flowers & patio in - may I suggest that you add dirt next to the house to create some slope away from the house while you are doing all of it, so when it rains or the snow melts, the water will flow away from the house. That will help too with the foundation not sinking quite so much. It doesn't need to be a lot of slope, but sort of like a shower or tub, enough to have the water flow away. It should be higher than the driveway so it doesn't stop at that edge, but doesn't need to be very tall. Maybe 5mm of vertical for every 25cm of horizontal at a minimum.

      Did you see the link I made to chapter 11? But I don't talk there about the first day of the course, when we learned about different styles. Like in 1920, when my house was built, the cabinet doors were super simple, just a frame around a wooden board. Before 1920 they were made with profiles on the frame and the board. We also learnt about mid-century kitchens and how to build them authentic. And how to make the kitchen look old but with modern features. There is also a book that I have looked into www.sekelskifte.com/product/bok-tidstypiska-kok-bad-1880-2000 but it's in Swedish.

    You have plenty of work ahead and thanks for the update. How about a Yew hedge (evergreen) to shield the property from the lorry parking area. Good growth and wind & dust barrier, can shape it easily. Also having a dense growth Yew hedges are good for birds nesting and small mammals.

    • @old_school_moaboa
      @old_school_moaboa  9 дней назад +1

      Yes, this is what I want, but I've been told it's too shady for them to thrive and grow tall enough to provide privacy. So I need to remove trees to be able to do this. The other option is a fence. But a high fence is more work and costs more (and requires a costly building permit if I want it tall enough to provide privacy from truck drivers, fences up to 1,8 meters don't require building permits).

      Thank you! Yes I have never told the story of how it got so neglected, but the last owners bought the house as a young couple and started a family. But the wife died and the husband entered a 10 year long depression. You see signs of hordering in the garden and indoors. I think he moved out years before the house was sold, and he or his now grown up children spent a few years cleaning up the worst mess, but didn't do anything to the broken roof tiles and windows and things started to detoriate.

      Well it's not a truck stop, there are truck drivers sleeping there now and then but definetly not every day. It's a private property belonging to a freight company, so most trucks just pass by. A few everyday. And I think the trucks that spend the night there do it so illegally but the company doesn't seem to mind it enough to do anything about it. I plan to talk to them eventually and maybe ask them to hang up security cameras on this spot to maybe prevent it? In the mean time I would like a fence but I will start with an ever green hedge I think. A high fence (over 1,8 m) require an expensive building permit
