I work in the sleep industry as a registered polysomnographic technologist. What’s happening is people were using a non FDA approved method of cleaning for their machines using ozone generation machines instead of the manufacture recommendation of warm water with a mild detergent. Because of this, and due to some patients not having AC and living in high humidity areas, it was causing the foam to break down. So far from the reported incidents it’s only been 0.03% of machines which again, user improperly cleaning them and/or the machine being stored in high humidity areas. It has nothing to do with the machine itself causing these issues

@@lucindalandphere860 actually if you research the recall you’d see the issue being brought to attention was user error. Patients using non FDA approved methods of cleaning their cpap machines and being stored in high humidity areas which was causing the foam to break down.

If you sleep for 8-10 hours and never feel rested. Do not dream. Excessive snoring. Wake up with your heart pounding and your head on fire, and breathing hard.
Please, for you own life get a sleep study done. It changed my life. I was a fool for not getting it when I was young.

One of the problems, is when one or two corporations are the only ones in charge of most of a given product such as these machines. Some medical supplies such as medical equipment (same with big pharma) need to have as many corporate players in the game as possible. If one c-pap machine is under recall there are thousands of others available to the patient. Here Philips is the big player and refuses to help any faster than they choose.

I’m so glad that after the 30 nights I chose to stop using it, because it wasn’t improving my sleep any. My minimal exposure to possible toxic chemicals angers me, but it angers me more that there are people out there like the ones in this video who don’t have the same luxury I did, of being able to go without. Phillips should have to pay for new machines, especially in the case of the woman who got denied for a new one. Thank you so much for reporting on this!! I didn’t even find out my machine was recalled until sometime in August! Once I knew that - I IMMEDIATELY registered on the Phillips website and contacted my prescribing doctor as well as the supplier of the CPAP. Both referred me to the other!! and ultimately to Phillips. Philips intern says they are working as quickly as possible to resolve this but it may take up to a year!!?? My doctor recommends not using it but like these people on your interviews will suffer greatly with the debilitating exhaustion if I don’t and I’ve been very conflicted of what to do!! The Phillips website says up to a year and that just seems unacceptable especially with a breathing related condition!! I hope your broadcast gets national attention and get this thing moving - thank you again for reporting on it! I really don’t understand why Phillips is not just replacing it with the dream station 2 if it in fact is clear of the issue???

Call your health insurance plan and see if they will allow and approve a replacement machine due to this product recall with Philips. Some insurances will approve it as they are aware of this recall. Some insurances will approve a replacement that is NOT a philips device but rather one from ResMed or other supplier as this is not the fault of the insured. Some insurances only ask that you contact your physician to submit a new referrral for a replacement. Be sure to get the name of whom you spoke with at your insurance company and phone number in case the provider needs to verify it. Some insurances will cover it, some may not but it's worth a try to check if they do especially being the length of time before a machine is replaced by Philips may exceed 6 months or longer.

So, I went to my pulmonologist yesterday and we discussed this. He said, if you use a CPAP cleaning machine it breaks down the filter inside because, it produces ozone gases that break down the filter. He told me if I have never used a cleaning machine on my CPAP machine I don't need to worry. I also have a water chamber which will catch any thing that may break loose from inside the machine. I decided to check the water chamber for particles and I found none. Do not use those face mask and tubing CPAP cleaners. I have always cleaned my masks, tubing and nasal pillows in hot soapy water and rinsed well and air dried.

That's not consistent with the news piece which claimed that the degradation occurs naturally. In addition to off-gassing toxic chemicals which would not leave particulate in the water, the C-pap does not run/push the air through the water. It is not filtering the air. Some particulate might end up in the reservoir, but not all particles will be caught.
