To be fair, while Rebecca WAS indeed the villain ,Valencia was hardly a 'princess or a 'humble yoga instructor' - she had a somewhat 'questionable' personality in Season 1 and was quite controlling of Josh (or at least, she did come across as such).

This is one of the best songs in the series! Besides being hilarious, it's a poignant moment of clarity about her own shortcomings, that most people never have the perspective to realize about themselves. It's some of the most ugly truth that you NEVER see in romances, or stories in general. No matter how bad someone is, they never want, or even think, to see themselves as the bad guy.

Nah people can deal with those issues without realising how awful their behaviour is & what role they play in contributing to their, or more importantly others peoples, suffering. Many people who are mentally ill actually turn it into them suffering & the world is out to get them, they have a victim complex & are unable to see the big picture or view their experiences or situation clearly, including blame & accountability.
The great thing is that in the song itself as she is coming to the realization she also realizes it isn't just black and white. She points out how she donates to charity and helps little old ladies cross the street. But her actions went too far and she became a villain. That doesn't discount the good she has done or can do. Just that she did bad things too out of jealousy. And that was what made her a villain in her own story. Because when she realized she crossed that line she was now the wicked witch with no clue how she got there.
@@Crux_JCre x a c t l y , as someone who is trying to get over a victim complex and has gone through the very same realization as her, she was low key scary to watch cuz it hit very close to home. Especially the part where she's like "but wait how am I a villian?" Bc I've had thr same reaction. I've talked allot of people down from suicide to the point where I've lost count so when i had my first friend breakup where i was the cataylist i didnt understand how i could be the problem because ive done so much good. Coming to the realization that youre the problem and working on yourself can be challanging because in my experience you tend to do from one extreme to another. So you start out with "im a good person" to "im an irredeemable horrible toxic monster" and all your faults reaffirmed that belief. Long story short , we all need therapy lmao

and funnily, in season 4 when greg and rebecca get back together, they were casually talking and rebecca thanks him for staying with her that night she got too scared of the dark and greg says "yeah i'm a hero" and later in that episode, greg sings "and i hate the phrase love conquers all and i hate that it's true" and idk its just so perfect. idk if the creators intentionally did this but i love it eitherway

Not only do I adore this song in itself, but it perfectly encapsulates the show. There’s comedy and some self-aware tongue-in-cheek, but also the tragedy of Rebecca struggling with self-hatred and insecurity every time she takes a step back for an honest look at reality-which is of course why she didn’t often do it until the end of the show.

This really hit different for me, because I just saw on the BPD subreddit today, someone say they had come to the realization that they were the villain in their own story. So when I just heard this song moments ago, that person was in the back of my head.

Marius Visser I went back to watch this for insight since it was briefly reprised in the finale, and noticed for the first time that the neighbor yelled at her for singing! Did that happen in-universe? Does she sometimes sing OUT LOUD these things that I assumed were in her head? Does she go into a fugue state or something? The evidence has been there all along that she is seriously mentally ill

"Gettin' Bi", "His Status Is Preferred", all of Greg's songs, the list goes on. I think most of them are in-universe. At the top of my head the only ones I can remember that were dreams / imagination: Friendtopia, Research Me Obssevely, Maybe This Dream, Ping Pong Girl, A Boyband Made Up Of Four Joshes, Stuck In The Bathroom, Feeling Kinda Nahghty and obviously Dream Ghost. I'm only on season 2 so this list can grow hahahah but the point is they mostly sing in-universe
What I love about this show is that in most TV this would be the minute the character would turn themselves around but Rebecca isn't even close to rock bottom yet...

That's clearly the "all or nothing" mindset, if I'm not the nicest person in the world then I'm the worst, she is making a lot of mistakes in this moment of the story but she's human, there's always room for improvement
The research they did though... Its funny yes, but in BPD you have a realization that you are doing bad things.. but in 15 minutes to an hour you're happy again.

This is by far one of my most favorite songs of the series. I love how it portrays Rebecca as someone who think she's sweet and innocent but realizing she's been a villain the entire time. The weird thing is that I can see some Andrew Lloyd Webber influence in this and I've never gotten into his music.
My favorite lines are the ones she sings at the end, starting with "I'm the villain in my own story, my actions have gone way too far." I love that whole verse.
