Mikhail Gorbachev funeral: Putin absent as Russians pay tribute to former Soviet leader

  • Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who launched drastic reforms that helped end the Cold War and precipitated the breakup of the Soviet Union, was buried Saturday after a farewell ceremony attended by thousands of mourners but snubbed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin’s refusal to formally declare a full state funeral reflects its uneasiness about the legacy of Gorbachev, who has been venerated worldwide for bringing down the Iron Curtain but reviled by many at home for the Soviet collapse and the ensuing economic meltdown that plunged millions into poverty.
On Thursday, Putin privately laid flowers at Gorbachev’s coffin at a Moscow hospital where he died. The Kremlin said the president’s busy schedule would prevent him from attending the funeral.
Gorbachev, who died Tuesday at the age of 91, was buried at Moscow’s Novodevichy cemetery next to his wife Raisa, following a farewell ceremony at the Pillar Hall of the House of the Unions, an opulent 18th-century mansion near the Kremlin that has served as the venue for state funerals since Soviet times.
At the ceremony Saturday, mourners passed by Gorbachev’s open casket flanked by honorary guards, laying flowers as solemn music played. Gorbachev’s daughter, Irina, and his two granddaughters sat beside the coffin. "I [will] always remember him from the first moment I saw him,” said Suzanna Massie, a historian and former advisor to U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

For the West, Gorbachev may look like a great leader.
But for Russians, specially those that lived in the USSR, he is looked as a weak leader that collapsed their system
And the current Russian government has a lot of former USSR officials on its higher echelons.
For them Gorbachev's death means finally the greatest traitor is dead.

Being God Fearing, Respectful to Human Rights and Human Lives is not a trait of a weak leader ! President Mikhail Gorbachev is a Patriotic Leader of a once great country. Unlike today, it is being led by people who doesn't give importance and honour precious lives, wantonly disregards the rule of Law !

@@mikkiemouse6118 its a matter of perspective.
Unfortunately to be a World Power, you require to have the ability to wage war against anyone.
And the fact Russia lost that power, the power to rival the USA. It's something the powerful within Russia will never forgive Gorbachev.
Its easy to talk from our perspective. But the collapse of the Soviet Union screwed a lot of powerful people.
Imagine going from being the 2nd most powerful country in the world, to basically a 3rd world country in a matter of days. No matter how much you love peace, the fact your country became worse and split up, is something the Russians refuse to forgive.
Peace, but at what cost? Their country got screwed and divided arbitrarily. You cannot expect everyone, specially the power to just accept it and move on.
Those powerful people spent the next 30 years trying to regain that power back. Once you taste power its impossible to go back.
We have grown way too accustomed to peace. So much that we value it too much. It is because of that that Russia and China have gotten away with a lot of things.
We can never take peace for granted. The threat of World War should always be the US strongest card to keep Russia and China at bay. And its failing.
The things you speak are nice. But those are idealistic points of view. Idealism is not the approach you should take in times of war, it allows the enemy to get away with it.

Contrary to what MSM tells us daily, this funeral shows that Russians, including the authorities, are a civilized society and respect its past. The way communism was in those days, Gorbachev did the right thing.
If it was an error to dissolve the Soviet Union, the republics themselves made it. The Slavic tragedy was that the three Slavic nations did not remain united. The tragedy also was that care was not taken for the Russian population that reminded outside the borders of the Russian Federation.
