Modern House Part 14- Top floor decking and roof sheeting

- Had two projects going on site for this video. Managed to hide most of the second one for this part. The two ends of the house are roof sections so they got 3/4 square edge cdx with blocking at all edges. The center section has 1-1/8" T&G for the top floor. The space is taken up by primary bedroom and bathroom with a fantastic room across the hall that could be an office, or nursery or workout room looking out past 700 sqft of green roof and into the forest.
Keep an eye out sunday for a video on the other project that was going on at the same time. I may have enough footage for a quick crane video that will allow you to tie it all together when you see it.

When I was an apprentice back in the 60's one of my tutors told me "You can learn a ton just by watching the way a skilled man plans his work, lays out his materials and then how he works without wasting effort". How true that was back then, and now I'm watching Jake do all of that and more on this build, something that is never easy, and even tougher on a tight site. Really enjoying this build and watching it come together.

Thank you sir! Yeah, it felt pretty good to get a nice week of weather finally. It’s currently trying to be winter again here but next 10 days starting tomorrow is supposed to be great.

I imagine about the time you get it weathered in the weather will turn for the better.
Yeah its' been thrashing the last couple days but the lower roof got dried in without ever getting wet and the upper roof will be the same next week
@@ShredPile What's the worst thing you have seen dropped by a crane? For me it was a 40' C container dropped on the third floor of the turbine deck at the power plant I worked at. That was a loud BOOM. Contractors messed up the pick/rigging. Extremely lucky no people or equipment was damaged on that one.
That had to sound like the sky fell down on that one:-) Cranes are the worst thing to be on or around if they get out of control, You're pretty much helpless until whatever is going to happen runs its course. Better to just try to always pay attention :-) @@Z-Bart

Even dragging them in from the forklift at the edge of the roof would be a whole extra heap of work since I really only have driveway access on this one and it Has to be close to 100 feet to the far end of the house at that level.

Those tele-handlers definitely make jobs a whole lot easier. Glad I don't have access to your crane. I'd be tempted to put on a safety harness, hook onto the crane and pretend I was flying, lol. On a serious note, just curious how far behind the videos are compared to the progress on the house. I mean, are the videos backlogged by weeks or are they being posted as you progress on the house?
+/- 2 weeks George depending on how much I can or can't shoot. I'm currently almost most of the way thru the upper roof. (you really don't want anything to do with riding that crane. not recommended, will not repeat:-)
@@ShredPile Okay. Was curious about the timeline. Noticed the weather was pretty comparable with the video timeline and it wasn't like a month or two behind. Thanks for the reply. Do you think it would make a difference if I wore a cape if I tried riding the crane? Lol. Kidding of course... just one of the first thoughts that came to mind when you first brought the crane to the site and you were controlling it with the remote. 😜

No construction adhesive for the upper deck underlayment?? Finally got the weather where it would go down much easier.
Not the best idea to glue roof sheeting to I-joists.
The two end areas I deck first are flat roofs that are sloped with rigid foam. Only the center1300" is upstairs on this top level. All edges are blocked and ringshank nails do the rest. Sharp eyes though, I was wonder who would pick up on that:-)
Not sure what people are thinking but pretty much all...repeat all houses are built in the elements, materials are made to withstand some weather, now if it was left open for a year your gonna start having problems, nice work again man.do you just do work around the area and how many houses have you framed.always been a framer or perhaps a millwright turned framer.nice little set up on the portable crain too!i love you're episodes, do not stop making utube videos,there's a lot of money to be made there!😊
Will do Mr. Schneider, yeah, these two roof end we got dried in before they ever got wet so the floors below them are already drying out even though we’re getting dumped on again. The upper roof will get dried in without getting wet as well by next week my time
Btw, you got me pegged, I was primarily a framer and still am since I started in the late 80s But I end up getting into quite a bit of work as a contract millwright as well. I also end up on a bit of commercial stuff where I just run around fixing stuff in four or five trades. I’m currently kind of looking at an offer I got for a year plus out of state commercial job but I’m sort of on the fence about it. I still got eight months to decide :-)
@@ShredPile I started out a millwright, then started do wood projects, but not to the extremes of what you're doing, I'm almost 67 driving city bus cause my body wore out ...both knees replaced...what city would you have to do the work if you took the job?

How many sheets of 3/4 plywood are in the second floor subfloor? You sir are a monster framer!
Thanks man! There’s 50 sheets of three-quarter on the roof. In the center section which the top level floor is all inch and an eighth, which is another 40+ sheets.
Two half sheets of black plywood with a lot of blocking, recessed a bit from floor plane. What is this for?
Curbless shower pan. The rectangular tile runs the long way with the room and and the break line will just tip towards the drain trench in the shower area. Super clean look

This guy thinks houses only get built 4 months a year. Imagine how much worse the housing shortage would be if that were the case. I haven’t seen a single sheet of OSB used yet. This thing could sit a year and be fine.
