- A covert team of Israeli contractors who claim to have manipulated more than 30 elections around the world using hacking, sabotage and automated disinformation on social media have been exposed in a new Guardian investigation.

The unit is run by Tal Hanan, a former Israeli special forces operative who now works privately using the pseudonym “Jorge”. In more than six hours of secretly recorded meetings, Hanan and his team spoke of how they could gather intelligence on rivals, including by hacking Gmail and Telegram accounts.

This is amazing, congrats to the journalists who were able to uncover this. Manipulating public opinion using underhanded means and bots is illegal or needs to be illegal and exposed and prosecuted. Especially when governments do it, regardless of intention. Winning politically must never mean winning because of trollbots. Tell that to every republican you meet.

“Israel based….” Well, that’s it. All I need to know.
Have a look at "How Israel censors the Internet" - they literarily employ a while army to manipulate Wikipedia and all kinds of social media sites to bend the narrative in their favor.
i mean they are far from the only ones doing it, but what's always interesting is that when its israel, it takes so long in the video to even mention that they're who's been talking about, whereas for anybody else, the nationality would be right in the title of the video and mentioned in the story within the first ten seconds. they're completely aware that by 1:35, the majority of the viewers will have already clicked off after getting the gist of the story in the opening.
This will only get worse.

I like how Telegram advertise themselves as the most secure platform and when they are pointed to a flaw they have, they just say that they were aware all this time but others have it too.
Almost every platform does have the flaw, it's the fault of old phone infrastructure and people relying on convenience. At least with signal and google you can choose the less convenient options and not be vulnerable (don't verify with texted codes). Question is why they offer the less secure option at all, might as well just let people have "password" as their password.
All social Media sites have direct backdoors to secret services and Team Jorge kind of entities.

We have been using it since there started to be claims about Russian interference in the elections. There is no problem with that, given that the counting of the ballots is done by the electoral tables themselves it is a parallel process which is just as fast as canning the ballots electronically and in practice just as fast as an electronic system, even if the results are instantaneous, you still need to check and set up some things so that in practice you may only win a an hour or two, if anything.

@@RiffGlitchard I could have answered my own question. The State of Israel (to differentiate it from the people who live there) operates under the same laws as
the US, the UK, and everywhere else. If money is involved, there are no laws. A lot of lip service is given to equal justice and free democracy and individual rights, but it is just that, lip service.
They should be careful though. It is a 2 edged sword (as Crime Minister BooBooNetyeryahoo is about to discover).
One can always rely on the mobsters to eventually fall out with each other.

I doubt that would help. This is probably not the only team of hackers out there and gmail is probably not the only mail provider that gets hacked.

@@krsslim personally I think we just have to accept (at least for the moment) that potentially any channel of communication can be hacked and watched by 3rd parties. It’s a bit like living in the GDR when you never knew if your home was bugged or your mail was secretly read by the “state security”… not the nicest thought but I don’t really see any solution to it unless one would want to remain completely offline.
