Tina marie was a great singer a lot of people slept on her. She deserved more props and fame than she got in life. RIP to Beautiful woman with the soulful voice. 😞👏
Teena was a fabulous singer - all that power coming out of that small frame - I adored her. I don't think she ever got the recognition she deserved. May she rock in Heaven forever.
Teena Marie, along with Stephanie Mills, are two of the most talented R&B singers. However, I don't believe they ever get their proper respect! Teena Marie is one of the best singers period, and she doesn't have to shake her butt to display her awesome musical and vocal skills. Go Lady T!
Teena Marie played sang and produced her own music - a hugely talented woman - the ivory queen - a little pocket rocket - she was a very innovative lady and a force to be reckoned with - in 1982 Teena got into a heated battle with Motown records over her contract and ability to produce new material. She won and the resulting Brockert Initiative made it illegal for record companies to keep artists under contract without releasing new material for that artist. It helped a lot of artists get out of their contracts. These are the sort of people I admire - hugely talented but also making a difference in the music world - Motowns most successful white solo act!!!!!!!!!!!
I grew up in Tampa, FL. In the 90s, a friend of mine worked at a men’s clothing store called Mr Man in Eastlake Square Mall (now Netp@rk). They had the coolest dressy clothes for young men in there, nice silk button-up shirts and slacks. I bought a many an outfit there back then. In the dressing room, nothing but Teena Marie posters. I probably knew her songs but did not know the artist until then. Damn I miss the 90s. Btw, anybody remember their Guess jeans and Z Cavaricci from back then?
First time I heard this I was driving to work. Nasty day. I was in my 20s and so of course I was hungover and late. And then this amazing song! I turned up the volume. I turned it up again, this time as far as it would go. My God, life had meaning again. My hangover was gone. The blood trapped in my headache all went somewhere else. I had a vibe on Teena the first time that I heard her, heard her... Didn't need to see her. And for her I was true blue, and then the song ended. One hit wonder? Who cares? She KILLED this song. Bless her soul wherever she is.
Lady T as Rick James called Teena Marie, was Portuguese, Italian, and Irish. Her ancestors came from New Orleans, and she felt that was her heritage. She played rhythm guitar, keyboards, and congas. She also wrote, produced, sang, and arranged virtually all of her songs beginning with her 1980 release, "Irons in the Fire", which she later said was her favorite album.
She has no italian in her. i watched a vid where claimed her ancestry. Irish, Portuguese. Her main blood but said she believes French and Native American too..
I understood that she was of very mixed ancestry, but identified most closely with her Portuguese heritage. But I've never seen her ethnicity DNA broken down, so I can't say for sure. Her ancestors lived in New Orleans where there were a lot of Italians, especially Sicilians living historically.
you can go online and find an interview with a radio station. go to youtube and you will find it and the ancestry i noted is what she said she is. her words not mine
Got to spend a couple of hours with Teena Marie back in the 1980s when working on a potential project that Rick James's brothers and Management was interested in helping me secure. It never did work out, but I will never forget that day. Teena, such a talent, was down to earth and friendly.
Me love's this song!! Watched & listened to this exact clip religiously growing up.... - Solid Gold - was it & a bag of chips back in the day!!!! THANX HEAPS 4 THE POST!!!
Was a local pyrotechnician for Rick James back then.... Teena was a great part of show... They toured hard being somewhere every day with the sweat stains and holes in their shoes... A schedule that knocked a few years off of some life's.
Teena Marie doesn't get much airplay on the stations in my town. 102.9 will play her old stuff maybe a couple of her newer tunes, but her new music needs more love. La Dona, Sapphire and Congo Square....are ridicilous! They really need to play more of her newer music but until the stations do, she'll be jammin' in my cars, my house and on my ipod.
RIP ... thanks for a great song ... great intro ... great beat ... great lyrics! Thanks for the trip down memory lane - going out to get more Teena CDs today!
I've always loved this song. However, I gained a whole new respect for it when what Teena is singing about actually happened to me. Teena, we miss you, baby.
I remember when this hit first drop my older sister had the 45 and would not even let me hold it. Seeing her sing the duet with Rick James on soul train man!! I fell in love..
@Lonestarry I agree with you 100% that Teena never got the props that were definitly deserved. Such a powerful voice not just in this song Lovergirl some of her song that weren't hits her voice is so amazing. I love her song I Can't Love Anymore from her first album Wild And Peaceful she hits some good c6 notes in that song. I just wih Lady T was giving the credit for here incredible talent! RIP Ivory Queen Of Soul. Miss you like crazy!!!!
I remember back in 1985 at my 10th birthday slumber party my girls and I was up singing this song not even knowing what we were singing about... I just remember I was Teena and my girls were the band....lol... memories...R.I.P Lady Tee....
@@BrooklynPanther Rick James also belongs in the R&R HoF. No small shakes to be a Rick James. But I don't know if he ever made an LP on which he performed every instrument and vocal in the studio the way that Lady T did.
I LOVE THE RHYTHM AND BLUES GUITAR OF THIS SONG FOREVER AND EVER !!! GREAT SINGER TEENA MARIE GREAT SONG WRITTEN BY HER AND GREAT BASS AND DRUMS... FOREVER A CLASSIC! R.I.P. TEENA MARIE FOREVER YOU'LL BE MISSED THE QUEEN OF IVORY SOUL...
This was the jam back in the day!!! I appreciate the talent of the current crop of female singers, but they will not be able to match the originals. Teena had a true gift. She was way too young to die.
Can you imagine...Beyonce....Gaga....Britney or Mylie getting out there with an instrument and putting on a performance like this.....I can't. God I miss her.
I can't believe she's dead, I just found out like literally a couple seconds ago. I wasn't really familiar with her music, but every time I hear a music legend from the golden era of music slipping away from us, it really hurts.

Season 5
LoverGirl = Teena Marie (1985)
Fan Made Music Video
Most definitely one of the top 3 songs for "cuttin rug" in all of the 80's decade! Great beat and tempo from a soulful White Chick!......."Jagar"
WoW,,, listening to her now, it is very surreal, her spirit will keep circling around her family, friends and those of us who were true fans!
She was such a fantastic lady. I'm glad that we still have her music
👁
I was never that big a TM fan, but this tune packs a SERIOUSLY funky groove. And that solo smoked! I am truly impressed.
Wow too bad your not a Teena fan. This lady has so much talent!!! You're missing out!!!!

Tina was a HOT music in my parents house. She had the pipes that would make dance and sing with her. Will never be another Lady T! RIP!
I don't think anyone will ever rock and soul like she did ever again. Goodbye Teena, God bless.

Ahh the fabulous 80's. Thank you Tina! This song brings back memories of my youth and good times.
This song takes me back to a bar called "The Alibi" which was a bar I hung out at as a college freshman in 1984. The DJ played this song a lot.
You go girl, you were at the height of your career. I feel your love: for the song you wrote, recorded and excited the fans....:
