I'm reading The Warden again and it always tries my patience. But I really want to read Barchester Towers, so I'm determined to get through it. I really liked Marion Fay, and that was my first Trollope. But boy oh boy, The Warden is the only book in the whole corpus of classics that I don't like. It's quite an incredible achievement on Trollope's part.
@@Bookslovejenna I am here sadly to report that I have once again given up on "The Warden". I picked up "Caleb Williams" by William Godwin instead and felt myself put into a sort of trance. I'm loving it so far.
I too have a complicated relationship with Thomas Hardy, I did read Return of the Native and liked it. If you didn't like some of the Barchester series, I don't think you will like the last book. Read a synopsis of it. But if you do read it, you may not be sorry. It completes the story of Barchester and its outward residents. Please read The Way We Live Now by Trollope, That was last years group read. He has about eighty books. How am I to get to all of them? They are chunkers.
I've been wanting to read Hardy but I'm a little intimated since I've heard conflicting things about his themes. Whould you mind telling me what were some of the elements you didn't like about his works? Would you recommend starting with Tess of the d'Urbervilles? (I own a copy 😅) Great selection of books for october!
@@sds7613 Hardy is a terrific writer. You feel deeply for his characters. He does not treat them well. There’s not much hope in most of his books. It really depends on the reader though. If you like books you want to throw across the room in outrage - some people do :) then start wherever you like with Hardy - except Jude the Obscure. That’s a tough one for anyone. If you like redemption arcs then I wouldn’t start with Tess. She’s treated poorly throughout and that never changes. It’s worth a read - again, he’s a fabulous writer - but her story is really tough to read. I’d start with The Woodlanders, The Trumpet Major, or Mayor of Casterbridge. And don’t trust Hardy with the hearts and lives of his characters. Never trust him. :)
