  • Propagating hibiscus, whether tropical hibiscus or hardy hibiscus, can be done in the home garden and both varieties of hibiscus are propagated in the same way. Hardy hibiscus is easier to propagate than the tropical hibiscus, but never fear; with a little bit of knowledge about how to propagate hibiscus, you can be successful at growing either kind.
    Daizz's tips:-
    The hibiscus cutting should be 4 to 6 inches long. Remove everything but the top set of leaves. Trim the bottom of the hibiscus cutting to be cut just below the bottom leaf node (bump where the leaf was growing). Dip the bottom of the hibiscus cutting in rooting hormone.The next step for propagating hibiscus from cuttings is to place the hibiscus cutting in well draining soil. Make sure the rooting soil is thoroughly wet, then stick a finger into the rooting soil. Place the hibiscus cutting into the hole and back fill it around the hibiscus cutting.Place the hibiscus cutting in partial shade. Make sure the rooting soil stays damp (not wet) until the hibiscus cuttings are rooted. The cuttings should be rooted in about 4-6 weeks. Once they are rooted, you can re pot them in a bigger pot.

    I've tried this before and I know it works :). Here in the north of New Zealand we have just experienced our driest summer ever, and one of the few plants that did well and continued flowering were hibiscuses. So I'm going to propagate a lot more, using your technique. Thanks for your video!

    Thank you for some great information. I planted tropical Orange Hibiscus last year and they are 7 feet tall and in need of pruning. I will be propagating the cuttings and sharing them with family & neighbors. I have enjoyed many of your instructional videos about bamboo and have 12 new bamboo plants as a result. Excellent video. Clear instructions, great demonstration of all the steps & stages. I am going to try this now on my Hibiscus sabdariffa (thai red roselle) that I grew for tea this year, but know it will not make it through the winter here in NC. I'll see if I can keep some plants alive inside by a sunny window. If they don't look happy, I do have some grow lights I can keep them under until ready to be replanted back out next Spring.

    I grew up in South Florida and now live in CT. My experience in FL gave me an understanding of how easy it is to propagate Tropical Hibiscus from cuttings and a number of other plants as well. Then my hibiscus got blown over in a spring storm and a branch broke off. So I did what dad did - got a pot, filled it with potting soil, clipped some of the length off the broken end of the branch (leaving leaves of course) and stuck it into the soil, watered it, and covered it all with a gallon wide mouthed jar. I put this little greenhouse in the sun, and walked away for about a 6 weeks. Well, now its 4 years later and mom and child are still blooming well, and the child needs its first haircut. nb: You can do this anytime of the year but not outdoors if its autumn or winter (grow lights work well), cuttings should be taken in early spring before buds form for the tropical variety, and don't pull the jar off the plant to check if its got enough water. It recycles.

    I live in the USA , in Ohio it has been a crazy winter sub zero some days other days warm (above freezing) inside our home it is dry and cool and my tree usually did well in our winter days with grey days (not so many sunny days) this year our tree lost a lot of leaves and has began to wilt and has starter sending new branches up from the base, the whole top of the tree is dying. The tree is over 20 years old and has been repotted twice. I think it got too dry and then over watered. The three top branches that have new growth I think I will try to re root from cuttings like you show to save my very old tree. I love the flowers it gives us and the spring warms up the house, and then on and off the rest of the year usually till Christmas. I hope the cuttings save my old tree.

    After rooting hormone is applied and inserted into potting mix, I like to water it from the bottom-up.... meaning, fill a saucer with water and place the pot in the shallow water so that the soil soaks up the water. This way, you will not wash off the hormone powder, if you water from the top.

      Thank you. Do you know of a method for rooting morning glory? I want the weed, not the polite hybrid. A nursery owner told me I needed to start with seeds. I did and they were all hybrid. I need the plant I used to have that will survive me and any weather conditions to make a large field of groundcover over rocks. They thrived under 40 ft pines before. Also, I have a few aerogardens. My first and only try failed when larva was found on the 8-week old herbs and salads. I also read that summer isn't the best time for hydroponics? I didn't have A/C and "someone" kept letting in the mosquito-eaters. I don't know if they caused my plant problem but they loved the three units in the kitchen. I did buy safer soap and it killed all but one herb. Are there any fast-growing trees that can be rooted? I'm in North San Diego County and trying to replace plants lost during the fires. Oh, what about ficus benjamina? It's an outdoors guy in a big pot. Thank you. I intend to learn how to grow things successfully.

    Urban Gardener step by step explanation. very helpful. I live in dubai and I dont get direct sunlight in my balcony in winters. summers alone I get direct sunlight but as you know they are harsh. what do I do? I love plants. they make me happy. please suggest if they can be still grown without direct sunlight.

    • @urbangardeningofficial
      @urbangardeningofficial  7 лет назад

      thank you ma'am for your comment...)If you’re trying to grow houseplants indoors you’ll find that some rooms of your house are low in natural light. Sunlight is the perfect balance of wavelengths necessary for plant growth and blooming, but you can also use artificial light to help your plants along. In fact, low-light foliage plants (such as pothos, areca palm,dumb cane & peace lily etc) can grow quite nicely with enough artificial light.
      For serious indoor growing and starting plants from seeds, you’ll need hanging tube fixtures placed right over your plants. You can buy special grow light kits that include fixtures and reflectors, but for regular houseplants you can really use any lamp or light fixture as long as you choose the bulbs carefully and place the lamps where your plants can benefit most.
      Fluorescent lights are by far the most economical and easy choice for houseplants. They come in tubes or compact bulbs (CFL) that screw into regular lamp sockets, and they’re cool enough to put close to plant foliage. Generic fluorescent tubes and bulbs are higher in blue wavelengths, so look for “full-spectrum” or include a mix of “cool” and “warm” bulbs. When in doubt, buy “cool white” products, since white light contains the full spectrum of wavelengths. For maximum effect, position fluorescents about a foot away from plant foliage.....takecare happy gardening...:)

    Hi Chandan
    You have touched upon the most common of this plant and my question to you is " Can the same hold true for the LUNA HISBCUS as well?
    If not then how is this to be propagated?
    Await your most anticipated response.

    This is very informative thanks! I have several questions. Please could you tell me - what do you do in 6-8weeks? Do I water everyday? When is it okay to put it out in the sun? Thanks!

    • @donnahale5019
      @donnahale5019 3 года назад +1

      Even if it's been 6-8 weeks, make sure you have roots -- nice ones. Planting medium was addressed in the video. Apply the plastic, not touching cuttings. SHADE. Let 'em have fun growing. I think I will give them their own pot when my eyes tell me it's time. I would be more comfortable with moving a nice sized plant? Wishing you success 🌺

    I also looked at your video about rooting in water. It seems that water is faster. What is the advantage of using soil?

    • @urbangardeningofficial
      @urbangardeningofficial  6 лет назад +9

      after roots form on the cuttings u have to transplant them in the soil only....:) if left unchecked cuttings can rot in water and during colder season u can not grow cuttings in water

    • @urbangardeningofficial
      @urbangardeningofficial  5 лет назад +7

      For 8-12 days when new shoots start to pop up... At that time u can Remove the plastic covering

      I just put some green shoots in a cup of water, and they grew root nodules and then leaves before roots, then I planted in the soil...voila

      @@urbangardeningofficial rabbits and groundhogs will eat the leaves off the stems, so place in the safest spot you have. I've had mine outside stripped many times and they do grow back, but I wonder if a newly rooted specimen would survive it.

    Few queries pl ,
    1. Size of pot required ?
    2. Should the sand be Coarse ( river sand ) , or , Fine sand ?
    Thanks.

      1. Normal terracota pot 6-8 inch diameter pots will work great
      2. Use any type of sand... Coarse will also work.. Happy gardening sir

      How are they now?

    • @roshanrathod4154
      @roshanrathod4154 4 года назад

      @@rahman113 they're good. I have tried to gradually decreased the humidity. As after suddenly removing plastic the cuttings will dry out. I made holes in the plastic for aeration. Tried keeping them out of plastic for alternative days and the result were okay. But the alternative switch gave 2 weak cuttings shock and they died. I still have 3 active and healthy. And have kept in plastic with holes still.

      @@rahman113 even though u can succeed in making new shoots into plastic. But this is the worst part of the year to do so. They have low success rate after removing polythene. The April, may, june are Summer months hence the climate is hot. So if u want to do this with polythene u can do after monsoon is over and in winter and until February. Not after that. And for best results without a polythene cover is to do in monsoon.
