The loading doors is a homage to sweet home. RE is essentially Sweet Home and Alone in the dark. Without homages to those, it isnt RE. Without the loading doors, it's not Resident Evil. It was immersive, how the doors switch to first person, each door having a unique visual and sound, and it created tension at times not knowing what's on the other side (ie Code Veronica). I used to be a frequent lurker/member of RE fan forums back in the early 2000s, and it was a real exciting time to be an RE fan back then. When this game dropped it was clear to the fandom that this is the definitive RE experience (and the definitive Remake at that), crazy to think that two years later RE4 was out and for a game that became so iconic it had such an controversial response within the community at the time.

Option 4 of your three options: do as with three (kill and scorched earth), but make sure you drop as many zombies into a large pile as possible. When zombies are close together, they all light up at once, which saves kerosene and lets you clear the majority of rooms without worrying too much about crimson heads.
Option 5: Save pistol ammo for dogs and bosses, and juke zombies until you get the shotgun. Aim up while close, and you'll get a crit nearly every time. If not, you should have plenty kerosene from cheapskating so much.

"It's one of the few gaming remakes that I really look on with a lot of respect. Partially because it's just _good,_ and despite the ones we've made today, it doesn't really rely on comparisons to the original to stand tall. It doesn't just look better than a 6 year old game, it looks better than most games of its time. But I also respect it as a remake because it's a game that works as a distinct experience, with enough new and different to justify both versions existing. It feels like it was made with care; it didn't take assets and graphics from some franchise sequel and then quickly slap them onto an older game. We get visuals and graphics crafted with care specifically for this loving remix. Can't argued with what RE1 remake had done, the perfected the classic RE game formula, or even survival horror formula. RE4 is still my personal favorite game of all time, but REmake is by far the most wholesome and polished RE game ever made, surpass even the later Remake titles. I still love RE2 remake and enjoy RE3 Remake. But for me REmake will still be my standard comparison for all RE remake titles.
REmake and RE4 are, objectively, the best games in the series. REmake being a perfect survival horror game, and RE4 being a perfect action game. To bring a comparison to Castlevania, Castlevania Rondo of Blood is the best Classicvania, and SOTN is the best Igavania, and they are both the gold standards of the franchise despite being entirely different genres.
i really enjoy your deep dives into this series. way too many analysis videos of resident evil boil down to the person making it just not liking item management, tank controls, or fixed camera angles. its nice seeing videos talking about the series that arent just dismissive of it for being unconventional.
How about because its a dime a dozen channel. every other gaming channel these days is doing long form analysis like this, and quite a few of them do it better and with higher production values. There's the answer to your confusion.
@@idrinkmilk282 Charlie is always first in what he is saying or presenting, his opinions are his own. That's why he is better than the rest. Most long form shit is the same games and the same opinions.

Inconsistent uploads. TGBS doesn't upload with a consistent schedule, so it's hard to draw a consistent viewership. Somecallmejohnny, who arguably inspired a lot of RUclips reviewers who had faster growth than him, has the same issue. Also, quickly, to idrinkmilk, you have the association backwards. Those channels don't have higher viewership because of better production values, they have better production values because higher viewership gives them more money and thus more resources to use on better mics and video quality. Consistent uploads get more views, more views get better equipment and software, better production values help keep schedules more consistent. Everything cycles back around.
Beating real survival mode as chris was one of my favorite experiences in gaming. And i would be remiss if i didn't mention that chris is arguably the stronger character overall especially for higher difficultys. other than the inventory space id take chris's higher health and critical hit rate any day of the week. But my favorite small detail is the fact that the broken doorknob doesn't break on real survival, a small mercy on the developers part
@Ruthus, They literally called these two "remakes" and banked on nostalgia to sell. Now that both are out and only one turned out fine, Capcom and their defenders are calling them "reimaginings." RE3 Remake is not made for RE3 fans and especially RE3 1999 fans. RE3 2020 is literally Baby's 1st RE Game. All the challenge and difficulty from even RE2 2019 is gone. No real puzzles, no S+ rank, no Ink ribbons, and poor Nemesis is totally neutered. Look up the sales. Out if the 3 recent RE games, RE3 Remake sold the worst. Beaten by FF7 Remake and Animal Crossing New Horizon. Even many positive reviews for RE3 Remake recommend waiting for a deep sale. Well, if you don't count IGN and GameInformer's shill reviews.
Pretty sure he's talking about the Yakuza remakes mostly there. I can't point to them since he's deleted most of his old tweets but he was very critical of Kiwami 2 especially.
RE2 Remake is still a great game, bad remake. RE3 Remake is laughably bad. Rushed and feels like the devs did not care about RE3 1999 at all. Very worried for RE4 remake.
@@Gruntvc RE4 is supposedly being developed by many studios and is releasing in like 2 years. If this is true, I don't doubt it will be better than RE3, but there's still reasons to be worried.
My niece's dog once broke a handle in her room. Yes, it is possible that the door becomes un-openable from one side. You have to rotate it with more pressure and eventually you need to apply more and more force and that can lead to it breaking entirely. But actually - you can just carry the other handle which has a square shaped rod attached and insert it into the mechanism to open any other broken door. Which could be a cool addition to inventory management too.
I got Remake a few years back but never played it back then, I loved the first three games and played every RE game I could (even Zero, Survivor, the Outbreaks) but never this one. I was afraid Crimson Heads would ruin the experience I was so used to. In the beginning of this month I finally muster the courage to play and I gotta say I should've done it sooner. It's an absolute masterpiece, Crimson Heads are actually genius like you explained in this video. It's not my favorite in the series (I like 2 and 3 a bit more), but no game has ever come close to the perfection of the survival horror genre than it. And perhaps none will. I had such high hopes for 2 Remake, and it was pretty good, but not perfect like it could have been. We don't talk about 3 Remake.
The greatest remake of all time and should be the standard every video game developer looks to when they try to create one. I just wish Capcom would actually do the same considering they're responsible for it!
Shinji Mikami was responsible for it, he created RE! Once he left Capcom, that was when Resident Evil fell as a franchise. It’s no wonder! It needs Shinji Mikami to be great again!
@@eropandasennin13 Remake 2 had some very significant flaws even though it was a blast with some phenomenal tweaks in the early game. The hand of "Sorry, low budget! Cut corners and put the game out" seems very heavily imprinted on REmake 2 and permanently engraved on RE3make
Finally. Well done. The same format can also be applied to Zero and both Outbreaks as they are the final old-school RE games. RE 4 will need its own tool of analysis.
Agreed. Loved the Outbreak series, too bad we will never get a chance to see the other 10 scenarios planned for it (Outbreak = 5 scenarios, Outbreak: File #2 = 5 scenarios)
Capcom be greedy. Sad we lost Shinji Mikami over that PS2 RE4 port. Worse, all the HD Remasters available now are based off the weaker PS2 port and not the GC original.
At least it actually was exclusive for some time. Unlike Gex 3 on N64 which shows off the "Only For" logo on its box despite being an inferior port of a 1-year-old game from day one.
@@tan4296 Disagree. The cutscenes on a PS2 port were condensed FMV's while on PS4 and Xbox One versions were fully real-time. Which tells me they were based on a Gamecube version since it also uses the real-time cutscenes. I think Separate Ways was the one based on a PS2 port since it wasn't in the Gamecube version because it still kept the low quality FMV's.
@@Gruntvc This is completely incorrect. The only other version of RE4 based on the PS2 version is the 2007 PC version. The Wii/360/PS3/XOne/PS4/Switch/Steam versions are all based off of the GameCube version.
Great to see this series return, probably the best breakdown of how these Resi games work. I do have one question/request however. Can you make / Is there already somewhere a comprehensive yet understandable guide describing how the branching choices in this game are laid out? Much like the flowchart you provide to graph out exploration I want one that plots out every little cutscene that can be found and what other cutscenes they affect. For example - (based on the original Resi 1) At the start of Jill's campain once she separates from Barry there are 3 possible places she could meet him next (Forest's balcony, Jill sandwich scene or back in the main hall) and getting one excludes the others for that playthrough. Or when 'investigating the dining hall' Jill can instead keep trying to return to the main hall until after a few tries the zombie bursts in from the other door without Jill having to explore through that one herself. Resi 1 is full of these situations which leads to a complicated web of possibilities in each playthrough for each character but I don't see a clear way of navigating these possibilities anywhere. The closest is to find a full in depth walkthrough guide that is aiming for specific endings. Would be nice to have one for RE2's zapping system too, though that would not be nearly as important/useful. There are still a few things that can be missed however.
@@Gruntvc I have only played the demo for both, haven't liked the gameplay. But i do recognise it's a good game. Wish they had done that do Outbreak and kept the mainline RE games with the fixed angle
@Diogo Rodrigues, Recommend getting RE2 Remake when it is on sale. Can't say I recommend RE3 Remake unless it is on deep sale. The demo for RE3 Remake is honestly better than the actual game. You get to explore what little of Raccoon City is in the game and Nemesis is like Mr. X on steroids. Nemesis is a complete joke in the full game. Even RE Apocalypse Nemesis is laughing at him.
@@Gruntvc RE3r is incredible... its the best looking game. Best playing game. Its not as long as RE2 ( and I prefer that game over re3) but its still a great time. The original Re 2 was longer then the original Re3r too. Re3 also includes Re Resistence which is a good time aswell.
I love this video and there are many things I would love to talk to you about concerning Resident EviI. I want to address something you mention toward the end about Birkin's relationship with Alexia. In a way REmake was giving you a backdrop to their relationship similar to how they contextualized Wesker and Chris. While Alexia was young, It has been established that she was a prodigy and that Umbrella had given her enough weight that she was put on a level that could realistically make an egotist like Birkin feel threatened in having his standing and recognition overshadowed among the researcher's circle. The last he had heard of her, she was on her way to some major breakthroughs and it isn't unheard of for one of them to reappear after years with their new project. That actually seems to be the norm for them. Anyway, I have been an RE fan since 96 and REmake has been my favorite of all since it came out, as one who has beaten it countless times and still continues to do so on occasion to wind down, I appreciate your analysis and suggestions on the subject.
the re1 remake is fantastic, thanks for covering it. you just uploaded this after i got done catching up to your other videos. looking forward to what you had to say about 0
@m_hicks12 eh, the mgs2 gameplay breaks mgs1s level design too much way too easily, to the point where all challenge is gone in some instances, and several bosses are basically ruined by it. The overall atmosphere is made much worse by the remakes much more boring grey-brown visual style than the original, just compare the endings of the two versions. Also I feel the new cutcenes are significantly worse and clash with the games tone, and the voice acting is frankly awful compared to the original, though on it's own it's not that bad but nothing special either.
I honestly miss this level of detail and faithfulness for a remake. i think RERemake and Trials of Mana are probably my favorite remakes I've ever played.
Is Trials of Mana remake great? I've heard it's way better than both RE3 Remake and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Heard Mana even outsold FF7 Remake in some areas lol.
@@Gruntvc Trials of Mana is pretty much an almost perfect remake. its only downsides are that the budget is lower than most games, the voice direction ranges from ok to actually charmingly funny, and the multiplayer aspect has been cut. But if you loved the original, it pretty much captures the magic, while also shaking off a ton of the annoying stuff (like spells stopping time every five seconds lol). I also suggest playing on Hard mode.
But there's still the choice of compromise for both just like RE3.5, the fixed, cinematic camera angle mix with ots aiming (only when you aim the game change to ots) like we saw in Hookman.
Pillars of Eternity is a CRPG that uses pre rendered backgrounds and it's only a few years old. They look fantastic and remind me how immersive pre rendered backgrounds are. They also didn't lose the original RE0 backgrounds, so the HD version has amazing high definition backgrounds.
@M. Sami I understand what you mean, keep zooming in the ots everytime you get bitten or when you just quick shooting to stun the zombies and the camera keep snap in and out could make the experience worse. Well they could fix this by keep the camera behind your back for a sec or two until you go to the next fixed angle change. And for the animation, well yes, I have to say the zombie bite animation is top notch in recent zombies game. Right now I cannot think of a way they can both show the animation but doesn't make the camera snap like crazy.
Shinji Mikami, RE really went downhill after he left Capcom. RE1 Remake 2002 turned out so excellent as Shinji, the original creator no less, made it. Neither RE2 Remake or RE3 Remake were handled by the original creators. RE3 Remake turned out so bad as it was rushed and not even made in house supposedly. Or by the same team who did RE2 Remake.
I might be weird but 3 is my favorite remake. I loved the second remake but man Mr X gives me the fear and I don't want to play anymore. Also loved 4. Any game before that I just couldn't enjoy with the controls.
@@Pretzelcoatlus I forgot that about RE4. If I had to think on it, the reason why it didn't bother me is because I always knew where pressing forward would take me.
@@Pretzelcoatlus True. I should clarify. In the ones with a pre-rendered background moving forward always means hold up. Direction is relative to the direction the character is facing. Im more accustomed to traditional controls where you press left to move left, right to move right, etc. Having the camera behind Leon helped make it feel more natural to me.
Really in-depth review, straight to all the points! Aside from harping on the Resi 3 evade mechanic a little much, I agree with almost all of this, and aside from the suggested replacement of the metal object (though I'm not too fond of the 2nd courtyard visit, so i agree that something should be changed there) great vid!
Literally my only complaint with this game was the addition of the mandatory One Dangerous Zombie mode, which you can't turn off and I feel is a really annoying, unneccessary addition to New Game + when it's forced on you regardless of your desires.
32:49 - "it doesn't just look better than a six year old game, it looks better than most games of it's time" My dude, this game looks better than most of the last 18 years worth of releases. It is only very, very recently, like maybe since RE7 was released, have games been consistently able to look *as good* as this game from 2002. Even today the environmental lighting and details are honestly fantastic. A lot of it comes down to framing, and if you frame a decent shot anything made in high budget games today can look this good, but you'd need to use photo mode, it's not built into the game like it is here. You don't get those shots like these in games because utility and function trump artistic direction and composition. REmake2 probably has just as good of environmental detail, but it doesn't have shots like 10:08 or 26:49 unless you take yourself out of the game. Man, I still remember opening EGM and seeing screenshots of this game and just... I mean I'd seen Code:Veronica, I'd seen Final Fantasy X, I knew games were getting better looking all the time, but still I was very, very confused when everybody was praising Halo to high heaven and I was like "yeah, it's bigger and better than N64 and Dreamcast, but it still **looks** like a game" REmake didn't look like a game. It looked like a movie. 18 years on and I am convinced we're never going to see such a huge leap in visual quality as that jump from 2000 to 2002.
This is pretty out-of-the-blue, but speaking of remakes, I've always wanted to see a proper Turok remake -- one that's aware of the ridiculousness of its concept while still remaining somewhat grounded. Not in a meta, "Dinosuars and aliens?!? What's up with THAT lol??!??!" kind of way, but in a deadpan, "Ryu Hayabusa in Ninja Gaiden 2" kind of way where the characters take the idea of "dinosaurs and aliens" very seriously despite the weirdness of it. Like, imagine a cutscene in which your commander is briefing you on the plan, and with a completely straight face he says, "So we've strapped rocket launchers to the T-rex. . ."
I feel like turok was at its best as an ominous Sci fi horror game series rather than "the dinosaur game". Turok is boring when the money shot Is just a big T Rex
I'm always disappointed when people say that they don't like these games because the inventory management and clunky combat are annoying. You perfectly explained why those are the exact elements that make these games compelling.
Hello! Im using your video as bibliography for my final project on the Level Design 1 course for Game Development Degree. Thanks for all your material and opinions, are very useful! About your suggested chart to avoid guardhouse linearity, the problem is that swaping the helmet key from plant 42 for the metal object, is that the continous time spent on mansion inmediatily after getting the helmet key will fatigue the player. I agree with the idea about that the guardhouse being paralallel with caves on chart. But maybe there's a new area / key missing in replacement of the full emblem to unlock the courtyard, thought that would be a great idea expand the area where you use the masks to get the emblem to make a transition to another area instead of the return to mansion in your suggested structure Love your content!
24:20 I think it would be remiss of me to not point out that after Plant 42 is when the Hunters show up, bumping up the challenge. Yes it’s less open to railroad the guardhouse, but it helps to keep the rising difficulty consistent.
Resi 1 remake is a masterpiece, it easily makes it into my top 5 games of all time! I love modding the pc version so it has upscaled backgrounds and PSX cutscenes, music and voice acting!
To add into option 3 there's also the means of staggering a zombie and then letting them grab your leg so they'll be done in with the headstomp. Of course that comes with the cost of health so you need to manage your healing items. I like that if you know what you're doing you can plan a route so that you can avoid the majority of crimson head encounters.
All the points in this video highlight why even though I loved RE7 and RE2R I just can't help but wish for another game in this classic survival horror style. So much potential is here, and with next gen resources and tech, I can only begin to imagine what the design can achieve. RE1R really felt like the starting point for more games like it to come, and it even proved that it could be popular in modern times when it got re-released on pc to great sales and acclaim, but sadly it just wasn't meant to be. Instead, it was more like a final send off to this particular kind of game. I guess if it was gonna go out anyway, at least it got to go out with a high note.

Nice vid! At ~ 28:00 you talk about Alexia and that she was asleep. But Alfred was impersonating her! So Birkin could be referring to her without knowing what happened
Recently replayed this game and it's still so perfect. It doesn't have anything that bothers me like the re2 and re3 remakes. I prefer the tank controls over the revised ps4 controls too. Feels a bit more satisfying to dodge zombies and explore, instead of carelessly flinging the thumbstick for easy dodges.
Yeah, the new controls in the remake were a really questionable decision. It would have been one thing if they redesigned the enemies to accommodate the new controls, but keeping everything as it is and just giving new controls makes the game way too easy when your character can manuvere in ways the game wasn't designed around.
@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 Also, they're just not good. Silent Hill 2-4's non-tank scheme has an actual sense of weight. REmake HD just gives you DMC1 controls, and it doesn't fit at all.

@@Pretzelcoatlus Most of the forums started to fade out and lose momentum after RE5. If you ask me, majority of the community by then didn't want to follow the series after Mikami's sudden depature from Capcom. Can't say i don't blame them, the franchise was in a really low place after RE4.
i remember that, i was permabanned from there. RE Horror was it called?
Because of that, the franchise along the fan divided into two distinct group, the classic RE and the modern RE with a small number of people standing in between.
Yeah,Imma be totally honest,I don't like the 3 first RE at all. Im not just a "dumb millenial duh" either. I love MGS1,Silent Hill 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 7,9 etc. But I don't like the 3 original RE at all. Very boring, clunky, and to me,not worth the effort to play, games
Also, people who bashed RE4 were clearly nerds who grew up with the original RE's and were hating on purpose
WHAT?! 😲 I didn’t you know can light up multiple bodies if they were together. 🤯🤯🤯
@@bluemoon9501 Well, now you know.

It's _the_ videogame remake, when I say the word, it's the first thing to come to mind." - TheGamingBritShow 2024, discussing Silent Hill 2 Remake
Remake was far, far ahead of it's time, it looks as good or better than some of the PS4 games today.

so was the original I used to think that Resident Evil 1 had better looking backgrounds then Silent Hill obviously the worst looking character models but it turns out that the pre-rendered backgrounds safe space to make the character models look better too.
The pre-rendered backgrounds are works of art and they aren't even static, they move.
Just wanted to point out that the graphs you make (presumably) for the progression of this game are really helpful images that add to the video's production value a lot
Fantastic work! You're RE6 video was what brought me to the channel and when you started "The Road to the Rocket Launcher," I became a patreon. This is high quality analysis and I'm glad to see that while they may take a while to come out, the quality has never waned.
@@northwindkey Sympthony is really not that good. I'd take Aria of Sorrow and even Dawn over SOTN. The entire back half of SOTN is dreadful.
i really enjoy your deep dives into this series. way too many analysis videos of resident evil boil down to the person making it just not liking item management, tank controls, or fixed camera angles. its nice seeing videos talking about the series that arent just dismissive of it for being unconventional.
I'm confused why this channel is stuck at around 140k subs. I thought it'd be at 500k or 900k with how good the vids are.
@@RealTrachta Better than the rest? charlie's great but compared to whitelight and matthewmatosis, he's not quite there yet.
Themtube tends to ""pick"" winners and losers nowadays. Censorship, shadow banning, like/dislike deleting, content deboosting, legacy media, establishment narratives, and Televised tripe from the old days being forced on you more and more in our new world.
I've been waiting so long for this. Thank you Charlie.
33:00 That subtle burn to Resident Evil 3 remake
...and Yakuza Kiwami
also the Yakuza Remakes and ratchet & Clank (2016)
@Ruthus, They literally called these two "remakes" and banked on nostalgia to sell.
Now that both are out and only one turned out fine, Capcom and their defenders are calling them "reimaginings."
RE3 Remake is not made for RE3 fans and especially RE3 1999 fans.

Glad you're back with this video :D
I'm still hurting for not having an Re2 Remake done the way Re1 Remake was done
This and Classic RE2 are my favourites in the series, love your Road To The Rocket Launcher series Brit 👊
Absolute treat seeing Road to the Rocket Launcher make a return!
So true
Shinji Mikami was responsible for it, he created RE! Once he left Capcom, that was when Resident Evil fell as a franchise. It’s no wonder! It needs Shinji Mikami to be great again!

I wanted so much for 2 and 3 REMAKE to be like this
2 Remake is a great game, bad remake.
3 Remake is an absolute joke, worst remake done yet.

One year has passed since this video and we’re STILL waiting for The Road to the Rocket Launcher on Resident Evil Zero
Been waiting for this. Thanks mate

Still the best Remake of all time.
Totally
@m_hicks12 eh, the mgs2 gameplay breaks mgs1s level design too much way too easily, to the point where all challenge is gone in some instances, and several bosses are basically ruined by it. The overall atmosphere is made much worse by the remakes much more boring grey-brown visual style than the original, just compare the endings of the two versions. Also I feel the new cutcenes are significantly worse and clash with the games tone, and the voice acting is frankly awful compared to the original, though on it's own it's not that bad but nothing special either.
Absolutely loving these videos charlie! easily in my top 10 0f all time re1 remake ^_^
I waited so long for a new video 🥰
Can’t wait for the RE:0 video 😁😁😁
It's a shame we don't get pre-redndered backgrounds any more. I understand their drawbacks and that we don't have the types of limitations any more.
Indeed
Oh hey you uploaded a video on my birthday! Now my days complete 😎
Finally the gaming Brit returns!
Great video as always, sir.
Good stuff man. The layers to this game are often overlooked.
It was crafted like a masterpiece it is. I still cannot belive how Capcom dropped the ball with RE3...
Camera is half a control scheme. RE4 had the tank controls, but it had the shoulder camera, so it has more wide appeal.
32:49 - "it doesn't just look better than a six year old game, it looks better than most games of it's time"
My dude, this game looks better than most of the last 18 years worth of releases.
I mean I'd seen Code:Veronica, I'd seen Final Fantasy X, I knew games were getting better looking all the time, but still I was very, very confused when everybody was praising Halo to high heaven and I was like "yeah, it's bigger and better than N64 and Dreamcast, but it still **looks** like a game"
REmake didn't look like a game. It looked like a movie.
18 years on and I am convinced we're never going to see such a huge leap in visual quality as that jump from 2000 to 2002.
Well said. This game absolutely looks better than some games 18 years later
Skip to 14:00 that’s where the interesting content starts.
Before that it’s all about the hypothetical ways one could tackle zombies...
Nah dude, I'll gladly watch the whole video
Ok cool but when's "THE LAST OF US 2 COMBO MAD"
I'm always disappointed when people say that they don't like these games because the inventory management and clunky combat are annoying. You perfectly explained why those are the exact elements that make these games compelling.
the flow charts in this series are beyond anything other video game related essay channels are doing right now, fuck yeah gaming brit
Really wish you had discussed Real Survival mode which comepletely changes how you plan and navigate the mansion
But maybe there's a new area / key missing in replacement of the full emblem to unlock the courtyard, thought that would be a great idea expand the area where you use the masks to get the emblem to make a transition to another area instead of the return to mansion in your suggested structure
Love your content!
24:20 I think it would be remiss of me to not point out that after Plant 42 is when the Hunters show up, bumping up the challenge. Yes it’s less open to railroad the guardhouse, but it helps to keep the rising difficulty consistent.
Fantastic video
Hell yeah comment 500!! I do love this series, gets me all nostalgic. Any word on the next episode?
Love the video! Will you ever tackle the DS version?

The PAL RE4 boxart is so fucking awesome!
The Resident Evil Remake STILL holds up today! :D
Damn brit back at it again with the dmc reference
Can’t wait on your take on RE0
Is there a really slow version of moonlight sonata playing behind this at points? That's a nice touch.
Awesome!
I must have played REmake at least 7 times and I never knew about the secret hunter attack
