You make a great point about priorities. I have such a good time getting out in nature. Taking photos just goes along with that. The problem I have is that I worry too much about the photos and let it take away from the experience. I'm constantly asking myself, would anyone else like this shot. The answer should be, WHO CARES!! It's my photo and my moment plus I'm not out there as a professional. Even if my photo turns out to be absolute garbage, and it almost always is, its ok. I had a LOT of fun being out there. That's all that should matter to me. Now if I could only remember that next time i'm outdoors.

I think you are right on target. When I was younger I was “driven” every time I went to get a wall-hanger photograph. Now I tell myself that great photos are a bonus! The real goal is to get out, have fun and enjoy my surroundings! When you do, the great photos will come! Thanks!

I'm feeling so much in sync with it, so connected. Nature is such a treasure trove. We just need to allow ourselves to dive into it deeply and we will come up rich. The things we stumble upon, to be happy where we are. So many valuable messages here.

Highly enjoyable, and wise words, and I really enjoyed the abstract images. Chasing likes and popularity is like fools gold, you end up never being happy and will end up falling out of love with something that brings one joy.

The Drone work in the Gobi is superb and the shot through the windscreen and quite a few more. Took me a long time to get to the point where I now do it for me, photography is a pleasure these days, not stuck in one genre, and I am not stuck in the golden hour either.

Hello Alister and thank you very much again for these beautiful photos. The last 2 weeks I have been taking pictures of autumncoloured trees reflected in a little river nearby and I am absolutely fascinated by these abstract patterns. What I want to tell you: It was your video of the patterns in a shallow river near your home that inspired me to look for such patterns in moved water and I love these phenomena that I didn‘t perceive till now though walking by watersurfaces frequently. These patterns and random structures are absolutely crazy…you only need to become aware of them! Thank you very much for this inspiration, it gave me lots of fun and some photos I like very much.

Absolutely on point Alistair. The best images I find by accident are the most treasured. I take the typical image but walking about or to the viewpoint I seem to find something that catches my eye. That's what I should be there shooting and I instantly engage with it. Of course after a carry on. After all the reason I'm out has to be addressed and I shoot that but mostly I find that the little scene is the best image of the day.
You continue to be a presence in my and many others minds. Please never stop talking and showing your passion and craft. I look forward to your up coming book. Thanks Alistair

A timely video for the young new year. Indeed, I find myself in transition on what I want from my photography and why I choose to do it. I think to have evolved from understanding the technical elements and searching for a deeper meaning from the journey itself. The photograph is simply a residue of the experience. Great video!

I had an experience the other day - similar to what you discuss in the video ...
I went to a location for a hike and photo session - and as I walked a long (slowly) I notice things and quickly composed a few shots and moved on .. then I started searching for a scene to "properly compose". It was fun to sit there, I enjoyed the scene and work on the composition ..but when I came home I noticed I liked the quickly composed shots more. go figure.

such a beautiful video, and yes creating for yourself is so important. You've been inspiring me these last day through yr videos. last night I slept really bad and woke up too early kind of depressed. Got up and I was out and about with my camera about 1 hour before dawn. I needed to photograph Nature with the mood I was in, it was so therapeutic got the right shots to express my mood and by doing so, this feeling of satisfaction brought me back in the good mood I enjoyed the rest of the day. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge 🙏🙏

Great video Alister, over the last couple of years I’ve definitely shifted to putting just being present in the landscape first, not putting pressure on myself to ‘find’ compositions. Nowadays a like to just go for a hike (normally with my better half and two badly behaved whippets) and take my camera along, but I make sure if something catches my attention I spend the time trying to make an image of it. I’ve ended up with so many more images that mean something to me than I even achieved on dedicated photography trips.
