Is PLAYA DEL CARMEN Safe?

  • With all the hype and media coverage of Mexico and Playa Del Carmen, and all the safety concerns, we decided to show you around the town to see for yourselves whether or not the area is safe. We are frequently asked if Mexico is safe to visit so now we’re answering that question!
    We start the day going for a run on the northern area of 5th Avenue. It’s a quieter area without many people, but has great sidewalks for walking, running and biking and very little traffic. You’ll find many condo buildings, a few restaurants and some great street art.
    After that we work up an appetite and head to Choux Choux Cafe for a late breakfast.
    Next we head to 10th avenue, which is not as touristy as 5th but has some great restaurants and fewer people. We come across a street market and get a chicken tamale and fresh juice.
    Later we head to check out the beach, going through Fundadores Park to get there. After exploring the beach we had up to 5th to show you how busy the street can get and also talk about the shopping. We don’t spend too long there before heading back to the beach for afternoon drinks.
    Lastly we head to a restaurant called Trujillo’s, we start with cocktails and then have a delicious meal.
    To sum up our day and all of our time we’ve spent in Mexico, we’ve never had a moment of feeling unsafe. You’ll see many police officers around making rounds throughout the city to ensure the safely of tourists. That being said, wherever you go in the world you should always be careful and cautious, know your surroundings and do your research.

    We just got back from Mexico and the only time I felt unsafe was when I was reading the internet. :-) We had a great month near Akumal though the best experiences were away from the resorts and tourist infrastructure. Hope you make it to Valladolid and Rio Lagartos! Thanks fro sharing - Henry

      The best experiences are always away from the resorts 😉right?! We're so glad you had a great time on your amazing adventure. We did not make it to those 2 spots but they're on our list for next year. We know exactly where they are as we've been to Holbox and Merida passing through Valladolid. We've always felt completely safe in Mexico. - Trevor

    We are here in playa right now and i have never felt safer...hellova lot safer here than in Seattle!
    The locals struggle kindly with us as we try to communicate, even fellow tourists help you out. We went shopping at centro mall and there was a brit in the line up to translate...go figure.
    Feeling Safe...absolutely !

      Completely agree! Playa is great.. and we felt 'safe' there too. Too funny that the brit was your translator. If you haven't already, go check out our best tacos in playa vid. Lots of good tips there! Especially since you're there right now. - Trevor

    The maremade sculptures are located in the old centro of playa del Carmen, that part is being there since playa was a fisherman's village.

    Thats what im going to miss when going to Guatemala is the mexican food, those tamales look so good! Have you had any Alambre yet? I have been backpacking around Mexico for 2 months now and I honestly feel more safe in this country then I would in the US. The people are SSOO friendly its unbelievable, totally has the wrong preconceived notions. With anywhere you go if you go looking for trouble then you'll find it but keep a smile on your face and look for great people and great times then thats what you'll find in my experience. Another great video as always! Until next time friends, keep having an amazing trip! Cheers!

      Hey Adam! Mexican food is the best right? We just love it. I don't think we had an Alambre no... but it looks amazing. We hear you on the 'safe' part. Honestly there is more crazy stuff happening in the US right now. Are you still in Mex or travelling? - Trevor

    Well there's always crime in every country. I've been to Tijuana, and Ensenada consistently even during the time when it was more dangerous (according to talk radio) in 2008 - 2010. I've lived in California most of my life, and the one comparison I can say is if anyone has ever lived in Los Angeles, one knows to stay away from certain neighborhoods and places after a certain time of day. Other than that it is safe.
    1. Don't walk down a dark alley by yourself (especially drunk)
    2. Mind your own business (don't be a tough person/start trouble)
    3. Show respect as one would being a guest at your friends house (treat people the way you want to be treated).
    Keep in mind is to do research on places to go, things to do, and the customs of the culture/environment. Watch videos like this one, as well as others and come your own conclusions. I'm hoping to make it out there December of next year. Should be fun.

    One thing I have learnt travelling is that no place is how the media portrays it. I try to always go with an open mind. We went to Mexico last year with our family and never once did I feel unsafe. Great channel, I'll be following your adventures.

      We so agree! We've been to so many places now and the result is always the opposite of how the media portrays it. Go figure! The key is an open mind like you said and of course be aware of where you are and what you're doing. Common sense stuff. Thanks so much for watching! We look forward to having you around.😀 - Trevor

    To be safe just follow the same rules you would in your city. Stay out of the hood. Here most of the murders are happening west of 307, mostly at night. At night we feel safe between the ocean and 30th all the way to Calle 54. This is where we go, others may say otherwise. Don't get wasted and wonder around late at night. Do a little research before you arrive. There are great places off of 5th and if you really want to enjoy Playa you really should try them.

    Hi, would you recommend getting a rental car while in Playa Del Carmen? Would that be safe as well?

    • @DelightfulTravellers
      @DelightfulTravellers  5 лет назад +1

      We've not done that before but it would be very handy given how there's so many amazing locations around it. It's completely safe to drive around there. We've taken local buses everywhere in this part of the country and that's safe too. I think (I've heard) the thing about rental cars in Mexico is the insurance can be expensive. It doesn't look like it is on websites but it may be when you actually get there. Look into that one - Trevor

    • @MrTomlarge420
      @MrTomlarge420 4 года назад

      I agree, my wife and myself have visited Mexico approximately 30 times, renting a car is expensive as the site says one thing, and that you'll require insurance that clearly states it's valid in Mexico, my wife is an insurance broker and we actually have worldwide coverage and umbrella coverage on top of that we confirmed was valid in Mexico and printed off prior to leaving as the site states you would need. ( we booked our car through Alamo) We booked prior to leaving Canada for 11 days rental, $600 CDN funds was the total upon getting to Mexico our "worldwide" coverage was not acceptable and we had to pay another $379 US FUNDS ...it equalled and doubled what we paid. Be careful. Very misleading, and upsetting.

This will be 1st time in Playa, Did a little research on how to get there from the airport.... ADO bus in like $10 usd per person with maybe a $5 cab ride to our actual hotel from the bus station. Compared to a private shuttle, roundtrip for $100 usd. What kinda advice would you recommend on the transportation from the airport.

    Hi guys thanks for the vlog.. This is so random but has Anna ever had a rhinoplasty her nose is so perfect! As for the man in the vlog he needs to brush up on his Spanish because every word he tried to say was pronounced incorrectly including Playa .. it’s pronounced Ply-a not Play-a.. but none the less I still appreciate the vlog! PS .. Pollo is Poy-o Not Po-yo lol!!

      tonnes! That was certainly on the higher end so we wanted to show that side as well. Check out our taco video we filmed before this. That has some of what you're looking for. You could do dinner for 2 away from 5th ave with some beer for $10-20.
