- Whoa it's been too long since my last upload. I'm really excited to be uploading this episode because I've really grown to love creating pixel art buildings for my game, Insignia, so it's great to be able to share my process with you. I'll likely do a follow-up next to show the whole thing from start to finish, so stay tuned for the next one.

Your content is completely on another level, the workflow, the depth, I don't know.... a joy to the eye.
The quality of content is what you would only expect from a paid course or subscription program. But he give it away for free, maximum respect.
Thanks for making these videos! The "orange blob" technique of getting the basic silhouette right first and then worrying about details later has helped me a ton.
I remember trying to get into pixel art about 3 or 4 years ago. Back then, I couldn't watch long art videos (I preferred speedart). I know, I know, shame on me. I wanted to see everything quickly, fast, immediately! I recently came back to making some art, and now I can't get enough of those videos. Seeing the entire process and listening to how the artist thinks about every detail of the art, seeing how they correct things, how they try different approaches to a problem, the tips that they give -there's nothing like it. It is amazing! Thank you for everything!

Adam, I have been playing games since Atari.... 37 years to all you awesome young people out there lol and I spent my whole life avoiding Video Game Design to be what my parents said is "Responsible" But your videos have spawned something amazing in my life and I have been slowly learning how to make small things like doughnuts, animals etc in Aseprite. Its the best thing I've ever done and even though your not done this pub you made is so amazing! :) Thank you so much for such a great video/Pixel Art Class. Peace and One Love my friend.
I love your use of silhouettes for sprites and even architecture. I never would have thought to do that. I'm obsessed with being pixel perfect from the start, and you're right - it takes forever to resolve the artwork as a result of working with small details only. Definitely going to try this approach.

I love how you show how much work goes into creating this and the process. It made me feel so much better that I was “slow”, in these times, all we ever see is the result so, really great content, love this.
I was looking for something like this, I was thinking about starting trying backgrounds and buildings but I had no idea if I should just open a blank canvas and start drawing or how to go about starting the process, this helped a lot! And the style you have is amazing too, can't wait for the next ones!
8:10 is such an importance piece of advice, I don't want count the many hours I wasted in the sketching phase getting the shape 'perfect' only to change it later on anyway. Very important for a good workflow.

Loved this tutorial! Most pixel art tutorials are very ‘in the box’ so to speak. I really liked the techniques you used to give the building more character and fluidity! Excited for part two. :)
All the advice you give is so helpful for any kind of art; you manage to make it very general while still getting to the point, which is something not a lot of people manage.

Great stuff. For a newbie like me with little art skill you are almost too good to get a lot out of but still very entertaining.
I have searched so many styles in drawing pixel art which are nice but this is the only one that really worked for me.

I've been watching through a lot of your stuff lately to help me on my pixel art journey and this concept you've been using of sketching out a block shadow first has helped SO MUCH. I'm an amateur in art overall but when I'd been drawing in CSP and sketch books, I'd always drawn lined sketches, and when trying to transfer that idea over to pixels it just wasn't working. Everything looked ugly and I couldn't get shapes riught with a 1px brush. Working with blocks of shapes has been so much easier for me to process that I might transfer that back over to other art too.
Your art style, especially for this game, has been inspiring too. I was feeling a little defeated with seeing quite a lot of pxiel art being so intricate and using dithering etc, as my preferred art is about big, blocky colours, and you seem to be hitting that sweet spot soooooo well of detail, but in could clumps of colours instead of lots of single pixel dithering.
That lesson r.e. selective detail inside mostly flat space is one that I keep learning. Every time I think I've learned it, I find six months later my style has shifted to be even more selective. Maximising this skill is the only way I'll be able to output the volume of art required for my game at the canvas scale I'm using.
@@AdamCYounis I love it! I saw your video showing some of your first backgrounds and how busy they were compared to where you were at years later. There was so much improvement in focusing on the parts that matter.
My own work is still in the stage of wedges of colour, but watching you is helping me understand where I should be focusing on improving in the first instances , and also how to suggest concepts without a lot of single pixels. I'm also trying to use very limited pallettes (5 to 10ish colours) atm to really force myself to work within parameters.

what is the program that you use to drawing
Id love to see tutorials on handling architecture perspective like im struggling with doing overhangs. I am trying to do an animal skin overhang look to a front door and its been a nightmare to get it to look right
The beauty of drawing on the computer with tools is that you can change anything pretty easy with tools. I am learning about pixel art with aseprite and think as of right now, it would take me longer with your process then to simply start drawing the building especially since you already have a stretch. To me all those blobs of solid colors would be distracting then just to simply pencil the sketch in first and go from there. Probably just my inexperience talking though.

Maybe call it the Mochas-Inn, as a reference to Moccasins (the shoe-wear) and that they sell the best Mocha in town.

About the research phase, how fast you usually do it? Do you just grab-n-draw or do you took some time for in-depth research of cultural/purpose significance of the architecture?

When you make pixel art it more or less looks me like you are just doing normal drawing and then touching it up🤔
For larger canvases, that's right.
