    Yeah. I found this channel bev I've been working on my Alienware for two days. I recently reimaged it and it booted up with that fresh build. .
    Then, for no apparent reason, I got " no input" on very single monitor or even TV I connected to.
    The only thing that I could think of that it was really dusty inside so I opened it up and carefully, very very carefully cleaned the components with alcohol. And made sure I was static free with my static bracelet. I got everything back together-all connections as they were before and still no video. I have tried hdmi, DP, dvi, vga. And any combo using adaptors. Tonight. I have been going through hundreds of Google search pages for my Alienware r7 pc. I had learned about cmos on one of those really lengthy threads. So I drove to Walmart and got a couple of 2032 batteries. I even waited for 20 minutes after removing the battery to put the new one in. I booted it up. And it flsshed 5 times. For cmos failure. I tried to catch a glimpse of the bios screen but I don't think it came up.
    I am now getting ready to try another 2032,Although I do not believe that the battery I bought yesterday is dead.
    Any thoughts would be helpful. Looks like this RUclips video is a year old. I hope you're still creating content.

      @LifeMeetLightning  2 года назад

      Hey, you didn’t notice any electrostatic discharge when you were cleaning or replacing the battery did you? It does sound like a CMOS problem, and CMOS memory is particularly vulnerable to that. I would also note that I have on numerous occasions bought ‘new’ 2032 batteries only to find they were dead straight from the package.
      Sorry it took a minute, life has gotten too busy. Still hoping to get back to making videos eventually.

    I have about 9yo pc. But for a last few months it has done several weird things. At one moment display started to show small white squares all over my monitor and after few restarts gpu fans stopped all together. So i assumed my gtx 780 had died and i bought new rtx 3060ti. Now for a month all was good, only my mouse started to skip and release mouse button holds while draging, so i changed mouse to a spare one, but soon this started to act similarily. Today my pc crashed 3 times in a row while trying Photoshop Neural filters on old BW photos. After that pc didnt start anymore. Thanks to your video I think now this is probably CMOS. Oh, i just remember another weird thing, Windows 10 was always after startup showing wrong time until I manually synced it. In Linux clock was OK.
    Now i am thinking perhaps my gtx 780 is still OK. Tomorrow morning I am gona buy new battery and try if it helps. Fingers crossed.

      Did swapping the CMOS battery fix your issues? I'm in a somewhat similar situation. Just bought a used motherboard. Popped it in with a new 650W PSU, used GTX 1080, and "new?" 2x8GB DDR3-1600. Ran fine for a few days, then shut down on it's own one night. Freezing and shutting down at login or even during scandisk operations or in USB boot environment.
      I did as much troubleshooting as I was able to before asking and receiving a refund on the mobo combo. Though the seller let me keep it, which is awesome. I've basically narrowed it down to either the motherboard, RAM, or the CMOS battery - which I just realized last night was very low after testing it w a multimeter.
      PSU is running my old board with no issues. If the GPU were an issue, it most likely wouldn't cause a forced shutdown with freezing beforehand. Though there is a chance the CPU is toast also. As it appears to have a small heat mark on the top portion of the lid, and one of the crystal resonators on the board might have gone bad (which apparently is tied to the CPU and some capacitors), as it has residue near it which could either be corrosion or glue.
      Haven't checked under the chipset heatsink either. Possible that someone could have put thermal paste under there, which is BAD! Thermal padding or adhesive only for those.
      Anyways... Life stories and such lol. Just wondering if the CMOS swap fixed it.

    • @LifeMeetLightning
      @LifeMeetLightning  3 года назад

      The majority of the time when you can’t save bios settings, it’s a battery issue. There are some other things that can have issues though. Motherboards do go bad, for instance, and you might need a new one. If you have a CMOS reset jumper on your motherboard, I’d make sure that it’s set properly. People that like to build their own computers sometimes over look that. You could also try to re-flash/update your BIOS, but that can be risky.

    What if you have some RAID setup? Will everything still work if the battery is removed?

    • @LifeMeetLightning
      @LifeMeetLightning  3 года назад

      There’s a lot of variables to answer that directly, but I’ll try to summarize. On newer computers, as I mentioned in the comment I pinned, a CMOS battery basically just power your RTC (clock). However, some computers still allow you to reset your BIOS settings (assuming you’ve changed anything, which you probably have if you set up a software RAID) by pulling the battery. Most, though, require something extra like changing a jumper setting on your motherboard. So, it is possible it won’t mess anything up if you pull it on a newer system, and if you have a hardware RAID set up with a dedicated controller, it should be fine. Older computers are a wild card, but you’ll likely still have to set some SATA settings at the very least. Some older computers stored RAID set up in non-volatile memory, such as on the drives themselves or on the motherboard (most newer do this also), but your motherboard will still need to know what is where if you’ve added stuff (SATA settings). I recommend a hardware RAID setup, there are a lot fewer headaches involved typically. Bottom line is, you’ll probably have to do some digging in your motherboard manual to get a straight answer.

    • @LifeMeetLightning
      @LifeMeetLightning  9 месяцев назад

      Does the computer operate fine as long as you leave it powered up? It isn’t normal for a battery to deplete that quickly. However, I’ve seen some cases where bad engineering choices do cause batteries to deplete that quickly. That would be a question for the motherboard manufacturer to see if that’s normal or not for your specific board. My suspicion though is that there’s a diode or something shorted in the battery circuitry that’s causing it to deplete so quickly. That could be a result of static discharge if you didn’t ground yourself properly when changing out the battery.

      You can revert to a restore point in windows before the update or just go to AMD’s website and find your card. They should have different revisions available so you can go back to a previous install. They might have some info about bugs with whatever version you’re trying to update to also.
      Either way, I’d try to install back to an older version at least to determine if it’s actually a hardware problem or not.

      I bought a computer that was set up specifically for audio recording one time and they gave me a disk with all the BIOS settings they tweaked along with windows settings.
      There are tons of great tutorials out there if you do run into issues. The main concern would be if your boot up drive was changed in your BIOS, and when you reset it, it tries to boot up from another location that doesn’t have windows installed.

      @@maskedredstonerproz I’d lean more toward it being your power management board or something in the power circuit. It could be the battery if it has one. Most don’t these days. If you’re not getting any indication when you plug it in, that usually doesn’t rely on anything the CMOS battery would handle.

      @@maskedredstonerprozIf you still have it, research how to test your laptop's adapter, power port, and battery charging port fins with a multimeter. The 2 most likely culprits are either a bad adapter or a damaged charging port. Sone laptops have charging port assemblies which connect to the board with a connector, rather than being soldered to the board, making it - relatively easy - to replace. And replacing the adapter is a cheap fix most times.
      Some eBay sellers will even let you return the power adapter if it doesn't charge or power your laptop. Just gotta read the return policy carefully. So not a loss if it doesn't work.

    Is a dead or near dead CMOS battery prevent a laptop from turning on? is the CMOS battery a rechargeable battery being recharged by the laptop itself?

    • @LifeMeetLightning
      @LifeMeetLightning  2 года назад

      Newer laptops, like within the last decade, likely won’t have a CMOS battery. Just like your phone, it will reserve enough power in the main battery when it ‘dies’ to perform the functions of a typical CMOS battery.
      If your laptop does happen to have a CMOS battery - and it died - then yes, that is one possible reason it won’t turn on.
      A CMOS battery is almost always a button cell type lithium battery (non-rechargeable) as opposed to your laptop’s main battery which is most likely lithium-ion (rechargeable).

      Usually a bad CMOS battery would cause startup problems not shut down problems - unless it’s a super old computer… Make sure your fans are all working. Most CPU’s will shut down if they start overheating. It could be a bad RAM module also. In any case, it doesn’t sound like a battery issue. If you want to replace it though since it’s cheap and easy, just get the same type that is currently in there.

      If it’s a newer computer, I would be looking elsewhere. Try reseating connections. Maybe even reseat the video card if it has a separate video card. If your computer isn’t on a surge protector and there was an electrical storm, that could cause some weird intermittent issues like that too. Some people assume a lightning strike would be noticeable when it damages your electronics. It doesn’t take much transient voltage to mess stuff up though, particularly in a computer, and if that’s what happened it’s going to be a difficult problem to trace down.
      But.. if it is an older computer, a CMOS battery getting low could also cause intermittent problems like that. You’ll know if eventually it simply won’t turn on again, and it’s completely dead. You could always take the battery out and measure it with a volt meter and see what the voltage is. It should be 3V or higher (around 3.2 or 3.3V). Remember if you do that though, if you’ve ever changed any BIOS settings, you’ll have to re-enter whatever you’ve changed again, assuming it’s an older computer.

      It could be. If your fans and lights are coming on, it means your power supply is working, but you should hear a beep from the power on self test. Your operating system won't load until after this occurs. The battery is just a basic coin cell battery. CR2032 is the most common size, but you should check what you have. You can get these batteries almost anywhere that sells batteries. Amazon, Walmart, etc. If you happen to have a multimeter, you can check the battery voltage (check it on the DC setting). It shouldn't be below 3V. Typical is 3 to 3.3V. If you don't have a multimeter, it would probably be cheaper to just pick up a new battery and install to see if it works.

And after that if I try to start it, it gets stuck on motherboard icon loading screen and hangs (but the keyboard caps lock key and that num lock key works), then I have to turn the power off and again turn on. But after several restarts and trials, the computer boots up to dekstop and even I'm able to play high end games with no problems. And this pattern is followed each and everyday.
    In the even viewer it shows event id - 41.
    Are these symptoms a sign of bad cmos?
    Sir please help.
    Thank You.

      It could be. Possibly graphics problem or PSU also. Do you have a separate video card or is it built in? If it’s a CMOS battery problem, it will likely eventually not boot at all if it’s causing these issues.

      @@LifeMeetLightning I have a separate video card. But according to my knowledge I think if I'm able to play the fps games smoothly with no lag when the system becomes stable so maybe less chances or I got it wrong. One thing I noticed is that the frequency of it getting stuck on boot screen is increasing day by day. Just now I opened and it is stuck to boot screen.

      @@devman8119 Well, a battery is a cheap and easy thing to try.. but the fact it boots all the way before it shuts down makes me think it isn’t that.
      Cold or cracked solder joints can cause intermittent problems. As things heat up, metal expands and makes better connection. But then more warpage occurs over time as it cools. Makes a bigger difference with tiny components. Capacitors can intermittently short too, and they only get worse with time and cause very random problems. Those issues can turn up in any component.
      A failing power supply is probably the most common thing though that causes shut downs like that.

      Under normal circumstances, a newer computer will probably still boot up. Older ones, not so much. It’s not really a black and white problem. It depends on the system. And if ‘other problems’ means you have some kind of ransomware virus. The only way to deal with that is to re-flash your BIOS typically.

Less than 2.7V, it should be replaced. There are lots of other things that could cause those issues too that are less common and harder to troubleshoot. @@6zozo I was referring to actually measuring what voltage is present on the battery. Less than 2.7V means it’s bad and should be replaced. Also, if you’ve taken it out to reset the memory, note that if your BIOS settings were changed, say to boot from a specific drive that has your operating system, it could be looking in a different location when you boot up where there isn’t an operating system to load. Was it crashing and rebooting originally before you took out the battery? Or did that symptom occur after pulling the battery?

    Is cmos invalid problem in my laptop is dead or weak

    • @LifeMeetLightning
      @LifeMeetLightning  3 года назад

      Dead or weak? Sounds like you're talking about a battery problem? New laptops may or may not have a CMOS battery. Cell phones don't tend to have one anymore (many of them never did) as they are designed to be always connected to the internet... That and devices shut down before batteries are fully depleted, reserving power to run things like keeping track of time and to keep your battery in good health. On older laptops, sure the CMOS battery could be an issue same with any computer.. but 'dead or weak' isn't very descriptive of the problem. If it's an older laptop, and simply won't boot up when you push the power button, the CMOS battery could be the problem.

      @@vincentliao2585 If it's a new build, it won't be your CMOS battery. It could be your BIOS settings (CMOS is what we used to call user settable BIOS settings which is pretty much always stored in flash memory now in newer computers). It could be a number of things, but a common issue is the boot order settings. You'll want to make sure the first hard drive to boot is the one that has your operating system installed on it. Way back in the day, last time I built a computer, I remember having to set this with jumpers on my motherboard, but things have probably progressed since then. I use Adobe fresco on an iPad with an Apple Pencil for the drawings and then import them as .png files and use keyframes in Adobe Premiere Pro during the video editing to animate the drawings. For actual traditional frame by frame animations you can make layers in Adobe fresco and import them into Adobe After Effects. It’s a bit more tedious though. Then there’s also Adobe Animate, which you kind of need a separate drawing pad for.
