Gastroparesis- A Gut-wrenching Condition

  • It's a gut-wrenching condition for almost 2-million Americans. Gastroparesis is a disorder of the digestive system that occurs when the stomach doesn't empty properly.
Dr. Michael Bays is a gastroenterologist on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System.
"The bottom end of the of the stomach has a small valve that opens up when it has liquid to move out. It has to grind the food. So if you put something like a carrot in there that hasn't been chewed well, that's going to sit in the stomach a long time until the stomach can grind it down to a liquid," Dr. Bays says.
Nerve damage from illness or injury is the most frequent cause of gastroparesis. It is linked to both diabetes and eating disorders. With a constantly full stomach, patients can have mild to major symptoms.
"It's not a comfortable thing -- abdominal pain mostly, nausea, vomiting. Those are all symptoms you get with it."
There is no cure for this condition- it comes down to a matter of management. Patients find what works best for them, from nerve stimulation to drug therapy and modifying meals. Diet is usually the starting point.
"Small amounts, more frequently, 5-6-7 meals a day things that are easy to digest," says Dr. Bays. "As unhealthy as it sounds, no fresh fruits and vegetables. If you want those kinds of things you put them in a juicer."
Working with doctors to diagnose and treat the condition, can help people enjoy a full life.

I had a surgery to repair this. They found so many ulcers my stomach adhered to my liver. They gave me kinda like a gastric bypass and I was underweight. I'm tall (5"8). It's been a full year now and I still cannot stomach anything but 2 foods. I'm either now totally grossed out from previous unfortunate vomiting or fearful of what might happen. I don't know if I have gastroperese anymore but I cannot find anyone that can help. My stomach specialist didn't teach me how to eat again after showing Starvation in my lab work. I don't know who else to ask for resources. I'd appreciate any help I can get. The thought of eating upwards of 7x a day sounds like my personal hell. I don't care about my weight. This isn't vanity it's pain and fear of pain

I think the pandemic gave me this. My family forced me to say in my shitty apartment in Brighton, Boston and I barely left my bedroom for two months, had a limited diet, accidentally took Ibuprofen on an empty stomach and was misprescribed both antibiotics & nystatin for a cold that was falsely diagnosed as thrush. (In reality, it was just an seriously adverse reaction to nystatin.) I just pray that I'm not diabetic and that my upcoming procedures are actually approved.

I have it and have unfortunately been on tpn before. now I have a feeding tube, have to vent my g all day long, feed into my j, iv fluids and meds due to malabsorption issues, a ton of nausea medicine, and endless hospital visits for tearing my stomach, intestinal blockage, leaky bowels, sepsis, on and off full digestive tract paralysis, slow colonic transit, surgeries, muscle wasting, on and off dumping syndrome on the rare occasions I’m not backed up, various acute organ failures, chronic gastritis, chronic esophagitis, chronic hypokalemia, dehydration, chronic gerd, a crappy immune system, tremendously dry skin causing cracks, rapid weight loss or gain, hair loss, hormone issues, etc etc etc and a partridge in a pear tree!! Lol. There are worse cases out there though. It’s definitely not an easy condition and many of us have secondary issues, or an accompanying primary illness. POTS is common, so is MCAS, diabetes, PCOS, neuromuscular disorders like MS or muscle dystrophy, cancer, SIBO, IBS, neuropathy, vagus nerve damage, Lupus, raynauds syndrome, fibromyalgia, ulcerative colitis, etc. you’re constantly in pain, constantly nauseous, constantly throwing up because food has been sitting in your stomach fermenting, or worse, the ones who can’t throw up to alleviate the pressure or get the rotten food out. Pain management drs don’t like treating you because most pain medicines further slow down your gi tract, there’s a gastric pacemaker but it doesn’t increase motility, it just helps with the nausea but it only works for 50% of people with less severe symptoms. It’s rare, so not many drs or hospitals in general know much about it, or how to help improve your quality of life. There are medications to help motility but after awhile they stop working so it’s best to alternate, and the really good medication is banned in America unless your dr fills out some lengthy forms to get an exemption, otherwise you have to order it from Canada, all because US pharmaceutical companies consider it competition, and paid their lobbyists to get our govt to ban it. However, it can cause heart issues or worsen existing issues. Even a lot of the nausea medicines can cause permanent uncontrollable muscle ticks. If anyone out there sees this, and think you might have it, ask your doctor to do a ges, Sitz marker test, or the smart pill. That’ll let you know how well you’re digesting food. Some can be diagnosed by an endoscopy as well. I was NPO in the hospital for 3 days and they still found food in my stomach when they did the scope. A few of these tests can be tricky. If you’re in a flare or just constantly have crap motility, then it’ll show on the test to confirm GP. However, if you’re not in a flare, or have good days, your results will come back normal. I’d ask for a repeat when your symptoms are horrible. If you’re recently diagnosed, need a support group, or are a caregiver, family member or friend of someone with this, there are a ton of good groups on fb.

Tanner Herzman I can’t even tolerate water... removing things from my diet has not shown any improvement in my symptoms.

SANTIAGO MALDONADO Most people with Gastroparesis can’t eat vegetables. They are actually not easy to digest. Gastroparesis is paralysis of the stomach. I’ve found the easiest foods to digest are junk food like chips and such. You’d think a healthy diet would help but you’re absolutely wrong.
