This is SO much faster than I thought it would be! I think you could definitely improve top speed if you worked on streamlining the body and diving deeper underwater so the impellers don't suck so much air.
And as an engineering teacher, what do you think the effect of the water on the contacts running with electricity. Looks like no isolation at all there. Do you think it's a proper engineering design?

One way to make it a bit faster would propably be to reduce the drag by designing the battery and electric control boxes in a sleeker way. Otherwise i wouldn't know how to make it better, since i'm just a boring software developer xD. Great project and great idea taking iron man into the water. Keep it up :)
Yan Bär Put the leg ones on the caf in a shell and have two on your back on top of the batteries, Military Contract in the future with that, also if you do run with this idea at least mention my name or contact me
Add a shark fin snorkel to your back pack so you can catch a breath without putting your head out of the water and then dive without wasting too much time at the surface

Love the idea and implementation. Nice job! Love all your videos. You are the only channel I receive notifications for on my phone! Anyways, the only thing I think would have changed would be to make it more aerodynamic. As a former swimmer, we always made a big deal (especially when starting and finishing laps) to make sure we are in the most aerodynamic posture we could be. Perhaps some sort of a brace to support the angle of the propellers so the arms would be free to make your body a more aerodynamic shape or a cone on top of your head. Reducing your drag and increasing your aerodynamics would definitely get you more speed, assuming the weight change would be negligible.
Looks great fun. Version 2 would need a much better battery arrangement. Ideally you'd design them like a scuba weight belt or system, where the weight is on the fount, and can be quickly released. Then you could use it with scuba gear. Also, how was it controlled? You want a variable hand control so you have good speed control. A practical feature - you want to be able to tell how much battery you have left, while using it, or a can see you stranding yourself somewhere. On that note, probably want to be able to disable the front or back propellers, in case one set breaks while far out.
Now my Daughter wants one! We would of course have to make a streamline case to put the power box and controller box in, but all together it is an awesome start to a great project, and possibly a great retail product! Do more please! It inspires my young potential Engineers!

Wow it feels like its been ages since you uploaded. Anyways what I love is how clean your projects are. I just slap stuff together with little care for how neat it is. I know a lot of people do this but you guys make things look good. I'd love to have one of those props and motors to have something as an example.
Not much to improve on the basic concept, but a good suggestion is to reformat the power lines to be sent from the bottom of the pack, attach a angled piece to the top of the pack to reduce drag during the swim, and to make complete vambraces and greaves mounts to help keep the motors on the swimmer and give more control to the swimmer as they would be able to move one ridged body (Tibia/Fibula or the Radius/Ulna) and with a proper mount, be able to preciously move the motor. Another suggestion is to keep the power tubes close to the suit, probably with either cloth bands that are on the swimmers upper arm and leg to help keep the tubes from dragging.
Great video! My only suggestion would be to find a way to attach the propellers closer to the wrists. This will give you more agility in the water because the possible angle of thrust will be greater.
I enjoy this video a great deal! I have some questions: How much did you need to program to control the motors? Where did you buy the supplies for the build? You could find more powerful motors to go faster.
I don't have a specific improvement, but something like this with refinements definitely could have a place in water search&rescue! Good job executing your idea! (This is the first vid of yours I've seen.)
Hey Eclectical Engineering, awesome video. I noticed that your turbine design had a strait lip (the shape was a constant cylinder without bevel). I think if you guys modify the turbines shell shape into more of a funnel design, you could generate quite a bit more power, ergo faster top speeds. Keep up the awesome work.
A very neat idea. I know I have seen something on RUclips that is somewhat like this and it has a very iron manish underwater feel. It had a wearable leg and hip... for lack of other words 'armor' which housed the ducted hydro jets. So basically what I am saying is streamlining and control rudders! Go for it guys!
I would try making it be multiple propellers around the limp instead of having one big one only on the outside. Also, great video, always enjoy watching what you guys have in store!
Very Nice! I love the idea! I think you can really increase maneuverability by putting two motors on each foot for propulsion and using paddles attached to the palms of your hands (or simply webbed hands) to assist in turning, and also to keep the hands free (iron man needs the palm thrusters only for horizontal flight to provide needed upward lift and as weapons, and you don't need either in the water) . Also streamlining the boxes and cables to reduce drag, and a shark fin for fun!
Opposite. If you want to go relatively fast your legs will struggle to remain straight and your arms could buckle and flop down to your sides. If you put the engines on the arms, your arms would simply be pulled, and if the control surfaces were trailing behind on you legs, they would not strain as much either, also, going straight would be the default direction just as in a automobile.
Great job guys, looks like your idea has a lot of potential. Perhaps use only the aft thrusters so your body can be made more streamlined. Imagine a swimmer underwater with arms outstretched in front. Also, with only the aft thrusters you could more effectively use your body to maneuver. I have a DIY hydrofoil that I mounted on the bottom of a surfboard which works great being towed behind a boat but would really like some thrusters like you made to get it going.

Yeah, work is pretty demanding at times.. We work on these projects here and there whenever we both have a free weekend to meet up. Aiming to post more frequently though.
First off, I'd just like to say how much I like this project, very cool. One thing I would change is moving the back two motors to fixtures that are on your feet. This way you can utilize the ball joint of your ankle to maximize the range of motion for the propellers. It will make maneuvering much more precise and user friendly I think. What do you think?

If you want you can design the box on the back to be more streamlined to cause less resistance in the water so you can go faster and have more fun ,not to be just an idea
That would be an awesome idea for search and rescue in Lakes during snorkel mode you would cover a lot more ground in the least amount of time looking for the missing subject
I'd love to have one of those motors. Would be a great start in building something like this myself. Being an old guy who, now that he's retired, has no money left having spent a lifetime's worth on toys and fun. But one of the toys I do still have is a large in-ground pool to test and play with something like this. I've see quite a few personal water propulsion systems and yours ranks about the best of the lot. Thanks for a great video. And again, I'd love to have one of the motors.
Make the backpacks aero(aqua)dynamic! There's a ton of drag on them. And maybe make all the elements of the suit aquadynamic! (hands/gloves, face, etc)
Add on a very simple plastic funnel to concentrate the exhaust water so you get a more intense stream. That should create a bit of back pressure on the turbine so you might get a bit more power from the motor or more speed. You also could get really schmancy and create a steerable funnel/nozzle. I am aware of a very small engineering company called "JR3" that makes a 6 axis load cell so you could get incredibly precision direction control. But the first step is just adding a $2 funnel to see how the nozzle concentrates the flow.
Your design is really excellent for prototyping. The battery and control boxes need a custom hydrodynamic body, and similar to airborne iron-man projects, limb fatigue is a serious concern which needs to be addressed. I think the battery and controls need to be balanced for weight/buoyancy (with a nod to buoyancy) and likely placed under the belly instead of the back for not drowning to death in emergencies I don't really want the motor, but I would love to collaborate or discuss ideas! Legs could be strapped together with one large motor to reduce variables as long as one or both legs could be freed quickly and easily.
Just a quibble, but at 1:40 the video shows the two engineers (engineering students?) testing the force delivered. Unfortunately the metal beam that connects the motor to the force gage is resting on the edge of the walkway. So your force measurement may be off. Other than that, pretty entertaining.
Excellent video and design idea. Now have something that you might have thought about but may have not implemented yet and it should make you guys a lot of money. Incorporate scuba gear into your design along with a mini exosuit and you will have something that a lot of scuba divers would like to take advantage of in their sport.
I been watching a ton of videos on thiss and am in the process of making my own. my update would be to add the 2 thrusters on your hand, to the backpack and stream line the backpack using them for forward thrust only would allow a diver to have complete hand mobility. What depth do you think u could reach with your set up? How was your waterproofing?
Dudes - I am sooo jealous - just curious though is that like a couple of motorcycle batteries you're carrying? How long could it last on cruise? On full speed? Found out this was 3-4 years ago - did u guys go commercial with this - I woulda bought one!!!
We got everything from Hobbyking. The motor is a Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 5065-236KV Brushless Outrunner Motor, but it looks like they no longer sell the props (bummer, they were super cheap). If possible, can you post a full parts list? Very interested to see what all went into it, besides just the motor and prop. Eg controllers, etc. Also, how did you keep the motors dry?
csmaster2005 electric motors are actually waterproof in general, and these actually rely on cooling them with water I believe. Might not be 100% correct though.
That could make some interesting recovery gear. Or even filming equipment. Hell you could market a version for kids too that's lower in price and slower.

I have been cruising in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico for 7 years, and this is one of the ideas I had that would be really fun in the sea here. I used a friends scooter and getting blasted in the chest with all the prop wash was uncomfortable. It would be sweet for free divers! Thanks for the great video, looks awesome!
In theory - this is intriguing. However - how about hooking in a subskelleton structure. Mounting the props on stressed nacelles and a snorkle mask going through the mid point of the bow and improving on the Scooters in the way. Using partial surfboard tech! With a steering system. Just a suggestion.

I would like to adapt those motors to a fixed platform, what is the website you bought them at? In the 90s I built a DPV and use 2 electric trolling motors but they were under powered . Did you ever thing to adapt a battery from a cordless power tool ? I'm doing a feasibility study on that to see if it would work better. Nice video guys

one way to improve the design is to make the electronics/battery enclosure sleeker. Also finding smaller containers or any other way to reduce the amount of air held in the enclosure. The enclosure acts like a floaty making it hard to go underwater.

The drag on the battery pack + bulky look could be reduced with a water proof bookbag. This would be awesome as a commercial product. Truly inspiring

For someone slowly developing an rov this really inspired me to make custom thrusters.

Excellent video and design idea. Now have something that you might have thought about but may have not implemented yet and it should make you guys a lot of money. Incorporate scuba gear into your design along with a mini exosuit and you will have something that a lot of scuba divers would like to take advantage of in their sport.
I been watching a ton of videos on thiss and am in the process of making my own. my update would be to add the 2 thrusters on your hand, to the backpack and stream line the backpack using them for forward thrust only would allow a diver to have complete hand mobility. What depth do you think u could reach with your set up? How was your waterproofing?

Dudes - I am sooo jealous - just curious though is that like a couple of motorcycle batteries you're carrying? How long could it last on cruise? On full speed? Found out this was 3-4 years ago - did u guys go commercial with this - I woulda bought one!!!

We got everything from Hobbyking. The motor is a Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 5065-236KV Brushless Outrunner Motor, but it looks like they no longer sell the props (bummer, they were super cheap). If possible, can you post a full parts list? Very interested to see what all went into it, besides just the motor and prop. Eg controllers, etc. Also, how did you keep the motors dry?
csmaster2005 electric motors are actually waterproof in general, and these actually rely on cooling them with water I believe. Might not be 100% correct though.

the little touches to make it more hydrodynamic would help: contain the wires, add fairing to the backpack. Also, what did you use for batteries?

I have been cruising in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico for 7 years, and this is one of the ideas I had that would be really fun in the sea here. I used a friends scooter and getting blasted in the chest with all the prop wash was uncomfortable. It would be sweet for free divers! Thanks for the great video, looks awesome!

In theory - this is intriguing. However - how about hooking in a subskelleton structure. Mounting the props on stressed nacelles and a snorkle mask going through the mid point of the bow and improving on the Scooters in the way. Using partial surfboard tech! With a steering system. Just a suggestion.

Baptiste Delattre true, but they needed floaters cuz the motor was heavy.
Yeah we didn't want risk it on the first attempt. Next time, we'll take the life jacket off and go deeper.

I would like to adapt those motors to a fixed platform, what is the website you bought them at? In the 90s I built a DPV and use 2 electric trolling motors but they were under powered . Did you ever thing to adapt a battery from a cordless power tool ? I'm doing a feasibility study on that to see if it would work better. Nice video guys

one way to improve the design is to make the electronics/battery enclosure sleeker. Also finding smaller containers or any other way to reduce the amount of air held in the enclosure. The enclosure acts like a floaty making it hard to go underwater.
If you’re able to shrink the battery, might be something the military might wanna have a look (if they haven’t already got something like it).
