Worked great! I followed along and used a ball point pen as a FID on a scrap piece of rope. Looking forward to my Groove fairlead arriving in the mail!
I just did this for the first time, using brand new 1/2" winch line. For me, clear boxing/packing tape worked much better than electrical tape. Thanks for the video and the innovative hawse/fairlead!

I made chokers and tow ropes from 5/8s hollow rope for years with all most the same tool that you use . Used a little different eye in them but never used thought to use it on winch Good innovation

I would like to see MORR, Fab Rats, and Trail Mater try out recovery and trail rides in BSF's area. BSF did awesome tackling new challenges in Utah. Let's see how they, the Yankum Ropes, and their recovery styles do in BSF's backyard! It would be great to see the abilities of their recovery rigs out of their element and how well they can navigate the obstacles they are unfamiliar with. It would be a great event for you to sponsor and get a new market since they all use your ropes. Put up a tent at the event and they can park there when they are not recovering or trail riding. I am sure Eric can help get you set up with the big event management. Everyone may learn something new and it would be great content with your ropes on four RUclips channels.

I finished doing my rope today and it worked great. I got the yankum fairlead months ago but was afraid to try doing this myself.
• The first time I went through it I put one knot in upside down, I had to keep repositioning the rope EXACTLY as it looks on the video to get it all right (a few times you flip it upside down and around without mentioning it)
• I was surprised how easy my Warn winch rope was to cut with normal house scissors, I thought it would be way tougher
• I had some much shorter FID needles but they still worked great
• Overall, it took about 30min which includes having to redo it twice before I got it all right
• Last month I went to Moab and a friend saw my winch hook clipped to my bumper and said it was in a bad place and on Fins and Things a steep descent smashed the hook a bit, now with it behind the fairlead my rope will be safe from future bashing
About the only thing that isn't much better than how it was before is that putting the winch into "neutral" it's kinda hard to pull the rope out, as grabbing a big hook was way easier before, now I kind of have to spin the spool with my fingers to get some slack on the loop to get it off the side of the fairlead.
But otherwise, this is WAY safer with no metal, will protect my rope much better than before, and looks amazing and cleaner now, especially with a flip-down license plate (my state requires them and I've been hassled near trailheads by cops)
Thanks for the video!! Could you add a nylon sleeve to loop to help prevent fraying? I noticed you winch rope loop is dipped.
Tap some threads into the needle. Then you can twist the rope into the needle.
I;ve been doing this for years, never failed. And no tape necessary.
Way old post, but I use a fidd that has a hook in it. Even easier. I can't remember the brand, I've owned the set probably 15 years
I just watched this and decided I’ll run the hook until I need to replace the line. Holy buckets I don’t have the patience for that!

What size is that FID thing tool where to get one? I just ordered a ton of them on amazon because I was confused. Need to splice a apex badlands 3/8" ( apparently ) rope so I can use my yankum fairlead on it. Commentary next time please in your videos.

Love the idea. Only problem I see is when it's frozen of covered in mud trying to pull it out.
Not as strong as the conventional three tucks & a taper but it’s more fun to splice it this way.
Maybe I missed it but what size FID should I use verses the rope diameter? I have 1/4” and 3/8” rope on the way to me for two different winches.

this looks like a twist on making the loop for Sampson Braid line. That's a very quick method I will put to use.
Not too dissimilar from the method I use to tie my own soft shackles.

This was a pain, not having a fid. I used 1/4” drive extension and wire to fish everything through.
You will save yourself a lot of frustration if you just buy a freekin’ fid.

Where can I find that FID?
My question is why do you I need your $200 Fairlead using that Brummel knot? Couldn't I just use a $5 velcro strap to tie the winch line back onto itself or affix to the fairlead that came with my winch?
I think I am going to struggle doing this for the first time…

Sent here by Casey The finished knot looks great. Wouldn't a simpler ( simpler for me anyway ) Bowline Knot work? I have stalled a double line 9k winch with a bowline knot loop any thoughts. I will upgrade to your products as my existing stuff wears out.
A knot weakens the rope by up to half compared to a splice
There is plenty of evidence that for this type of rope you weaken it significantly by using a knot. The taper is also very important. You can look up various tests with different brand names such as Amsteel, Samson, Dyneema and Spectra. Hope this helps.
I am sure the knot does weaken it some, but most pulls are nowhere near the breaking strength of the rope. A proper knot is a quick field fix.

Not everyone speaks English 🤷🏼♂️ it’s also easier to find and pause visually. However I’m getting lots of requests for this.
@@YankumRopes For those that don't speak English, the current video does not provide verbal instruction anyway. I think the request is just to add English to it instead of the music. That will help the English speakers, and the non-English speakers won't lose anything.

Sorry what size fid are you using.
A 3/8” fid (or 3/8” socket extension and electrical tape) will work best for a 3/8” winch-line. It will also “work” with a 5/16 with difficultly. It will work easily with a 7/16” winch-line.

A Swedish fid would work great for this task, at least the second one.
Too bad you cannot insert protection sleeve with this kind of splicing. So you have to stick with classic method. But the material is very slippery and , honestly, I couldn’t find any video how to splice this 12 strand rope made of this kind of material. If someone could send me a link I appreciate.

Not the way I learned to do it. I don't remember exactly, but it involved inverting both "eyes", then pulling one through the other.

I'm trying this. You are going too fast and don't explain what you are doing. My kids are learning new ways to verbize aggravation. Keep in mind that I can't take my jeep into my office to watch this on the big monitor.
I got it the second time I tried it.
Poor example- weak splice. The bury needs to be 72x the diameter of the line, and the end of the buried line needs to be tapered.

Agreed! A standard fairlead is $30-100 so with the ingenuity of this one $125-$150 seems reasonable, but $250? Sheesh.

NO!!! Because you have access to the other end of the tow line, you don't need to tuck the eye, you can tuck the short end and then tuck the long end. The standard Brummel lock is for when you're splicing only one free end. This shows a complete misunderstanding of the locking mechanism when you're doing bench work. I have made thousands of Brummel locks, including the flag halyard on the Seattle Space Needle.
NO!!! Because this is a demonstration on how to do this if your winch-line is already on the drum of your winch and you don’t want to spend the extra time unspooling and re spooling your winch-line adding an additional 10 min to this process. Yes I’m demonstrating this on a bench, this video is for people that just got our fairlead and already have a synthetic winch-line on their winch.
Please dumb-down the music track and dub over it with at least an English interpretive subtitle from a narrator explaining the process. Very helpful information! Thanks for sharing.

Ha! Good thing there are UV blockers in most winch-line coatings, at least the good quality winch-lines have that feature, maybe this is why your lines keep failing in your videos?. What about along the top of your drum, how is that immune to UV?
@@YankumRopes the top wrap has a sleeve and we changed bumpers to enclosed style to accommodate the UV

For all of the extra flipping of eyes inside out and right side out, it would almost be as easy to unspool the whole winch to access the other end of the rope and just do the standard locked brummel. Even with 100 or 150' of line. That is just my $0.02 worth.

you should be tapering the tail once it's been passed through the core of the line. that sudden change in dia. will be your breaking point and will be your weakest area of the line now. you probably lost more than 50% of the integrity of the rope.
No wonder these winch lines cost so much. Any knot that takes longer to tie than it takes to sh!t when you're constipated, is not worth tying.
