I read a review of this album in our local newspaper in late '79, went out and bought the album, took it home and loving it, then I got to this last track, and this 18- or 19-year-old didn't quite know what to make of it either, but I knew it spoke to me. I promptly went out and bought their two previous albums and have been a huge fan ever since; and, no, there weren't many of us in those days. Great upload, and great to see some young people getting into this.
If I had to pick five discographies to take with me to a desert island, XTC's would definitely be one. Andy Partridge was able to get the great, harsh guitar solo on this song by overdubbing with his headphones off, so he couldn't hear the backing track he was playing along to! I love the way it contrasts with how every other detail of the instrumental track is "locked in".
XTC are a remarkable band. I my opinion, they're the greatest pop band since The Beatles. They can produce absolute bangers like this song, but they can also produce some of the most gorgeous music you can imagine. They are WELL WORTH a dive to see how amazing they can be. You should check out Senses Working Overtime, Travels In Nihilon, Playground, Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead, etc... They have covered pretty much every topic under the sun... and have played everything from lovely acoustic ballads to screaming rockers.... with a bit of everything in between. I've worked at record shops and on radio (college and commercial) and they are my all-time favorite band. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks for the wonderful reaction!
Did you know XTC original drummer Terry Chambers has an XTC cover band called EXTC?? I've seen them once and I'm seeing them again this year (tickets already purchased). GO SEE THEM! Even though it's just Terry from XTC, it's still XTC to me. Sounded just like I wanted it to sound. Even the singer did a good job. Andy Partridge and Dave Gregory from XTC gave Terry their blessings with the band. I even got Terry to sign a poster of XTC I still had that used to hang on the wall in my bedroom, lol.
This is my favorite track of all time. I think because it's so raw and emotional, it would be impossible to replicate this performance; just a masterpiece. I'm glad the algorithm recommended your channel, you have great taste!
Then you should probably try Frank Black - Teenager of the Year (1994) album. THREE lead guitar channels - Lyle Workman, Morris Tepper, and Joey Santiago. So that's ultra high-end session guitarists. Frank Black at the centre. Eric Feldman on bass and electronics/keyboard. You'll get similar INSENSATE intensity and craft there also.
Top 5 XTC songs. Such an amazing band. MM and the Mechanical Animals wanted to be them. XTC is a powerhouse of emotion. Glad someone else gets vibes from them too.
Listening to Drums and Wires all the way thru for the first time was a real experience to me. I had never heard music like what is on that record. It feels futuristic yet classic at the same time. I kept listening to it over and over again and now it’s one of my favorite records.
“Weird and good”…. You’re right to me. Even if every single XTC’s song leads the listener in a unique and new universe, and even if almost every XTC’s fan prefers different songs, a lot of those songs are weird and good. They’ve been able to create a lot of unusual stuff but catchy in the same time. They really made it their own way. It was really good to watch you digging it! I think you’re gone have a lot of fun surfing on their music!
I can't get enough of this! I find myself listening to this song quite a bit and I'm 64 yrs old ... that in itself must seem weird to people that know me but I love it for some strange reason and I like the movie as well.
For me, the genius of this song is that the growth in intensity that (for me) poignantly reflects growth in frustration. I think it's easy to overlook the gradual changes in the music while appreciating the moment-to-moment stuff.
You have to understand this was 1979, NOTHING sounded as good as this song. Listen to those guitars, bass and drums, and Andy's vocal. I heard this on Halt and Catch Fire and was WTF is and went out and bought everything I could find and buried myself in this record, thinking where this song in 1979 being played. It wasn't.. There isnt a song in 2024 that is as creative musically and sounds as good vocally at this and they recorded this album start to finish in just 4 WEEKS!! Great album and song. I want to hear Andy talk about how this was recorded and written..
XTC is one of my favorite bands of all time, this song is really ahead of its time lyrically and musically, it creates such tension in each verse up to the guitar solo and on to the ending of the song. I think the commentary of the lyrics are still relevant today and even more so with social media creating this angry atmosphere.
'Halt and Catch Fire', as much as I remember, you can hear this song in the first episode of this tv show. The whole album Drums and Wires is beautiful, but "Complicated Game", as the last song on this album, is the real hidden gem.
Love xtc. This is a gem of a song tucked away on the end of a fantastic album. Scissor Man and Making Plans For Nigel are also great tracks from the same album. But they were definitely a band that evolved album by album. Fantastic singles band too. Love your channel BTW

Pulp perhaps but Talking Heads were doing their own thing from 1976 though I see how it's relative to this song. I actually prefer their more alternative tunes than the commercial pop material.
@@jamesnolan4412 hey James, such a great surprise to get to know this band, this song never goes out of my mind, and I decided to buy this cd, well, reviewing it I realized there is a bit of bowie as well, i am referring to his album Lodger, you have a great day. Carlos from Orlando.

'Making Plans For Nigel' is probably their most well known song (here in the UK anyway) but being an atheist you may appreciate the song 'Dear God' which i think was a single in the US but not over here.
A quirky song on an album chock full of quirky new wave rock songs. They progress a great deal after this album , their album Skylarking is very Beatles influenced. My favorite album though is English Settlement. Try, Melt the Guns , Ball and Chain, Senses working overtime.
The constant smile on your face throughout the video was it, I'm glad you liked it. :) Anyway, up next: Nina Hagen - Naturträne (live on Rockpalast if you wanna see some goofy facial expressions). The vocal range this woman has is insane. It's a must listen.
