Hot Rod Corvette Hack - The Long Version
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 сен 2010
- This is the video version of the Corvette Hack story that appeared in the Nov. '10 issue of Hot Rod magazine. You'll see the Hot Rod staff shred an '85 Corvette, cutting off parts until it was nearly a bare frame. The point? To see how much the car's performance improved as it dropped weight (into the Dumpster).

I still cant believe that someone actually threatened to kill them with a pipe bomb over this.
+Samual Iam Yeah those 80's and 90's vetted were ugly lol
Me too, the Vettecart is the best Roadkill car ever!!!
Probably a close second is the mayhem
Then Rotsun
Then that buick they're working on.
Because Corvette guys are either old as fuck or autistic children...its a worthless 4th gen..who cares.
Not necessarily... I grew up with old Vettes and I love the Vette Kart. I love Vettes but I'm probably not a "Corvette Guy" though because I love lots of other stuff too. I've met plenty of douchebags who would put my '72 down because unlike them I actually drove mine every day and it hadn't been restored within an inch of it's life (by someone else). The guys I've known who actually drove them, modded them and raced them were pretty cool-in other words gearheads like us. The numbers matching resto show car crowd, not so much...
That Corvette had been completely ratted out by the previous owner anyway, these guys managed to make it from junker to something awesome and unique. Then Roadkill made it into a *fucking sweet* buggy in (the most recent as of this writing) Episode 35.
. . . . Is that the same Corvette that Mythbusters used?
[NKH] Plymouth Haefeli I wouldn't be shocked if it were, but Mythbusters *did* sell the engine and trans out of theirs.
Samniss Arandeen They sold the whole deal back then, not just the engine.
[NKH] Plymouth Haefeli i went back and looked and the one from mythbusters had a leather interior and was auto. this one appears to be cloth and its a 4 speed
andrew mac tx for saving me some time in checking myself i was curious
Really hard to watch that as I am a proud C4 owner. However, the car looked to be in bad shape before it got butchered so I guess it's alright.
Originally looked cool after also looked cool
literally, yes. I agree.
It’s not like they’re whistling diesel and destroying something that could be brought back around. Plus it became the “vet cart” which was pretty awesome to look at lol so it’s not like they destroyed the whole chassis
Anyone watching this because they were watching the c4 go kart video??
yeah I am 😅
+Christian Garofalo Yeah!! lol
Yes most certainly due to that.....Ariel Atom made easier...I gotta C4 conv so it's halfway there!
me
Yeessssss
Okay this corvette was left in the desert and flooded l. the interior and exterior were complete junk. Everyone stop bitching and saying they destroyed a corvette because. it was already crap.
Which is it? Desert or flooded??
@@williswhatchutalkinbout4367 Both
For all of the people saying that they destroyed a good corvette. Just remember that buick, the people who make slow cars, made a faster car than the c4's with a v6.
Yes but that was back when emissions took over, and they were experimenting with turbo chargers and shit. GM is still GM, chevy or buick. Vette ran 14 sec quartermile stock with 230 hp, not bad for 230HP - 1990 Zr1 c4 (300hp) would most likely smoke a regal gnx.
ShadowGrave The zr1 wouldn't smoke a gnx, they both run the 1/4 mile in about 13.5.
dragkid185 nice, didnt know for sure. thanks.
TwoWheelJockey most Honda Civic models can easily beat a C4 while stock. Hell, a Toyota Sienna minivan can walk a C4. Still, C4 is a good platform for building a dirt cheap hotrod that doesn't suck. Stock motor is meh, but it doesn't have to be...
Acura TL GTLM No fucking way a Sienna could walk a C4. C4s still have almost 400 pound-feet of torque, and between 250-300+ horsepower. That’s not bad. Not to mention they handle sublimely.
You guys should sponsor a different fire/rescue company for every episode. A rescue engine or squad has all the tools to do everything in this video, such as removing doors and cutting vehicle glass, just to name a few tricks. They would be able to showcase their abilities, tools and skills as a part of demonstrating their way of keeping people safe in the event of an emergency on public roads and educate folks by means of a different practical sense. It would also be a great way to support local emergency response companies and raise awareness, while still having fun in a professional setting.
Good idea
Some people need to chill out and put things in perspective. First off the car was completely clapped out to begin with. Want a complete money pit? Start fixing this thing up. It wouldn't be worth that much fixed up anyway. Yes I understand I don't like trashing stuff either. It would be one thing if they just drove it off a cliff (which honestly would've been pretty funny too) but they made something really cool out of it and proved their point in the process. I love Corvettes, grew up with them (was almost born in one), and was sitting in the passenger seat banging gears for my dad while he was driving since I was old enough to walk. When I was old enough to drive years later, my dad and I fixed it up and I daily drove that very same '72 I grew up in through high school, college, and for years after that with a suit on haha and no AC in Florida, and I STILL have it. Makes me a lot more of a "Vette guy" than some obnoxious douche bag who paid for someone else to restore or outright bought a restored car and now thinks he's hot shit and is now an authority on the subject. Kinda like the annoying all of a sudden weekend warrior Harley crowd who buys the bike and all the clothing to go along with it. REAL Vette guys love the Vette Kart.
i read the article. car was abandoned in a desert.
And here we see the birth of the very first Vette Kart
This was mentioned in the latest FWF episode. I’ve been following these guys since 2013-2014 and have never seen this video and the beginnings of the Vette Cart till now.
Great to see these improvements! I feel the same way about corvettes!
I want a corvette go-cart now....
C4's can be had for under $3000. And if you're careful when removing the parts you could make some of that back
the vette cart is one of the most awesome vehicles of all time!
The boys at the body shop can buff this right out.
Oh boy, that is so funny and original! I have never heard that before, did you come up with that all by yourself!?.... Dork!
Kenny DeMartini Dickweed
It's great to see that ROADKILL revived this project to make it into a killer project. I am sure that old corvettes are going to be SO expensive on craigslist now, even junky ones if people want to make vette-karts.
Somehow I got it in my head that the Vette kart was the C4 the mythbusters let 2 pigs decompose in for 3 months....
I own a 94 LT1 to see the carnage involved to shed weight reminds me of the divorce I just went thru and how much I lost it hurt to watch both but change is good I WANNA GO FAST!
What a great way to make a cheap Exocet! I bet the market on trashed C4s has been vastly improved due to this video and there will be guys looking to make track cars like this. To the nay sayers clill out we are not talking about a C1 here and there are still plenty of the 225,000 C4s in the world for you to love. Props to HotRod on this!!!
goes to show that colin chapman was always right. 2.3 seconds on such a short track is a massive improvement. and all simply by pulling off useless stuff and some slight setup adjustments. imagine if this thing had a better weight distribution. like if you'd make it mid-engined. it would be a weapon. and basically a slightly overweight lotus 2-eleven
The birth of vette cart
Still watching this 6 years later
I'm liking the new old content that is being posted
Chad Reynolds involved with an ultra-light car and Mike Finnegan involved with removing a hood, this is prophetic of their futures.
This is the essence of what hot rodding is. Taking a factory vehicle that was already engineered and making it faster for as little money as possible with form following function (for worse most of the time) in the tireless pursuit of speed. I am glad Hot Rod isn't all about diaper polished billet rods that cost 6 figures and never see rain. I want Hot Rod to be a man's magazine with humor, ingenuity and fun. Thanks guys this really entertained me.
honestly that looks like a great base for a whole new car XD
yeah you could almost make a hill climber out of it
85 Vettes are nothing to cry over. They are worth so little for a reason.
This video is a perfect example of the Law of Diminishing Returns
wad up!!! man the crazy things you guys do.. love it... and that corvette could be a great dun buggy..
Watch roadkill ep. 35
I was a subscriber when Caddy Hack was published. Remember reading it as a teen. Good times!
That's all these cars are good for!!
Hm, I've got an idea. Short body Corvette, with the fuel tank frame off and with fuel tank in the former boot. Gonna look maaad.
I like how your test pilot went and put his flame suit on once you hacked the back off and left the fuel tank hanging out the ass.
Thanks for sharing this, much appreciated.
That's where Vettes belong... In a dumpster with the other garbage.. Great vid guys!! 👍
+MOTORHEAD8835 No....Vettes don't belong in the dumpster with the other 'garbage' (eg Mustangs and Mopar).
love these guys some new hot rod stuff finally
Little did they know that 4 years later, they would make the Vette buggy outta that sucker. and it would be AWESOME.
Those wheels are beautiful!
great stuff this is the stuff that got me turned on to hot rod magazine i've not only have the vettehack issue but the pontihack and the caddyhack ish as well keep up the good work yous guys!!
I remember the Caddy hack. I guess that makes me old. It did a great job of demonstrating power to weight ratios.
You are so right. It's all about power to weight ratio. Not more.
Cut it up, there is no harm no foul. Realistically if every one was still around the would never become collectable. Have fun with it then use the engine for some vintage iron. C4 vettes aren't exactly rare by any means.
love that passenger seat wiring harness lol
I could tell everyone to stop bitching about them cutting up that old Vette, because they're worthless to me, but I love and restore 70s motorhomes, so who am I to talk? Lol!
That is one young pro driver.
Hi, thanks for your reply. As a teen this and the stingray were the models I knew and I got hooked on them since then.In my country the cars are mainly RHD so I am accustomed to the European and Japanese cars of the day..everyday........but the Corvette ,I am lucky to see once a year. The newer ones are nice but the older models are really more manly and sexier
Saw the Corvette-kart video a few years ago, and this is my first time seeing this video.
I was never a Vette fan, so I enjoyed this.
You guys are nuts, but I love it! Wish I had King Tacos in Sweden!
As the proud owner of a ruby 95 it's sad to see a Vette this trashed. But kind of funny to see one that's headed for the bone yard anyway stripped down and hammered. Still ran OK lol
Crazy to think that this was the Vette Cart before it was the Vette Cart
Great video....
Dude, this was for sheer entertainment and to prove a point. Don't let your political affiliations spoil enjoyable RUclips videos.
I wish I could get paid do this crap to cars all day. These guys have the best job in the world
I just love the Hot Rod videos for better or worse the are cool.! How much fun would it be to get paid to do all that crap !!!!!!
@ 1:23 that gas splashing out in the background looks safe lol
Yeah that's basically all I was trying to get through to that guy.. He couldn't understand the car was no good anymore and they was just having fun while showing how much difference weight can make.
Ever since I had a C3 attack me I have wanted to get even with the Corvette moniker....... THANKS HOT ROD!!!!
normally i like roadkill, but seeing rippin this thing apart really hurts
thanks to the fine folks at harbor freight, who have the greatest power tools ever...
This issue just had me crackin up!!! I just had 2 see the vid.
Looks like a great track day car
as a corvette owner of a similar year and same metallic silver color, I am horrified. Yet intrigued.
I can't get the November 2010 issue so how about showing us some more? This was one of the better videos you have....
Ah, the "infamous" VetteCart... looks like fun! :D
I watch this like once a year.
holy shit. it looks good shortened up like that.
i almost feel bad watching this but it is badass
HAHA , I would pay money to see them butcher a Vette a day !!! This was most satisfying . Only topped by the kid driving wearing a big ass Blue Oval on his driving suit.... Priceless guys.... Priceless !!
@HotRodMagazine are you guys ever gonna bring this back with the sticky tires, better suspension, and other goodies. You hinted at that but I've yet to see it.
Am I the only one that was bugged by the ac compressor sitting on the front of that motor?
the birth of the vette kart
The Vettekart in its infancy
Is this the car that became the Vette Cart? Frankly, it was much cooler as the Cart, this was a junker before they cut it up.
+Jane Roxanne Beamon Yeah, it's the Vette Kart.
Very cool.
Frankly, I don't see why people were upset, that thing would have cost far more to fix up than it was worth.
Vette guys are strange, I guess.
Not just the Vette Kart, it's Finnegan very first story on Hot Rod Magazine.
It was a junker when it left the factory
I think what it was (at the end) is that the suspension was too stiff for how light the car was, they should have softened it up a bunch.
I would daily drive the end product of this project anyday.
so basically make a real car a go kart nice job hot rod *thumbs up*
Weld a model A cab to that thing and you would have one badass "ratrod"
and then a few years later the vette cart was born!
@92MustangLover I completely agree.
Oh i see. I don't understand why everyone is giving me negative votes. LS1's are really solid.
That's the dead pig car from "Myth-Busters". They put two dead pigs in it and sealed it up then put it in a steal box for a few months. that is why the thing is no longer worth driving on the road!
Only these guys can make a C4 Corvette cool
awesome.
I know this was just an experiment, but it still pissed me off. A sweet paint job could have been a sweet ride. :/ - Prolly cuz I own an 86 in good condition.
The inside of that car looked like it was trashed. I would of sooner pulled everything from the inside of that junker if I had plans on driving it, frankly I like what they did with it.
***** LOL dude that story is hilarious! HAHAHAHA. Spray on tan 80's guy with a crackwhore? Hey bro the car was a gift to me. I don't go around hot rodding. The car is 220hp and does like a 13s quarter mile. LOL, trust me it's not an ego thing. BUT it's very fun to cruise with the top off in the mountains and IMO it looks good stylistically. True, it lacks in power but I think it still has lots of torque off the line.
ShadowGrave
Honestly the only good thing about these ld smogged v8's is for a dirt cheap amount of cash and a little bit of work and you can have them pushing 300 hp without any issues. All in what you get for it and how you do it.
jr540123 Ya I was thinking about that, opening up the intake, few other stuff. These cars look good with the top off and windows down. Very fun to cruise after a carwash. People think they are like worth 20k LOL..
new paint would not fix the amount of problems it had
well, maybe I wanted that car
This is ridiculous, I love it!
I heard Rob Kinnan who works at HRM say that they used the car because it was a flood damage car and was basically trashed.
Doesn't removing the doors and body panels affect handling via chassis twisting? I.E. if you remove the doors, doesn't that allow the chassis to twist more? It might handle better if they were to stiffen up the frame some, but that would just make it heavy again.
I wonder how this would work with my 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan. The LT1 has power, but not enough to make this 4200 pound car move well. I wonder how light I can get it? I might have to try 🤔
corvette/ gokart the two best things in one package
Owning a C4, its cool to see this haha
Their kinda ugly tho
i found this looking up what a naked corvette would perform like. it would be nice if this car ended up in the hands of a hobbyist track racer and was finished properly. i'd love to see that.
Just pulled apart my dream car
The vette kart is born
Because 1974-1986 Vettes where shit, just like all American cars were during the Emissions years. There is a reason you see a lot of love for pre 1974 and post 1986 when EFI and newer technologies finally let cars have power and performance again.
@GuineaJay I'm pretty sure the point was to basically leave the car stock minus the weight reduction.
Does anybody know what "AMF" means? I've seen that a few places as well as on the rear of this Corvette.
damn I need that top
Looks like a fun open wheel race car.
lol that looks like so much fun
