  • 2.8ft on the Krassel gauge, July 1-2
Rapid names follow conventions from California Creeks site, which we found to be the most in-depth, if not up-to-date description of the run.
    00:00 first strokes
    00:39 slide creek
01:26 big hole that caught us off-guard
    01:45 devil creek
03:04 big logjam, typical flavor for this section
    03:56 surprise rapid
05:01 elk creek scout and rapid (right channel run)
    05:51 deer creek
    07:59 k creek boulder garden
    09:16 grouse creek
    10:00 greyhound rapid
10:24 nameless class III+/IV, pretty typical
10:46 porphry creek and pack bridge
    11:25 long boulder bar
13:11 bottom of constricted straightaway (our favorite drop on the river, beautiful)
    13:50 bending right
    14:55 falls creek #1
    15:16 falls creek #2 scout
15:42 falls creek #2 into falls creek #3 (contrary to the guide there is absolutely time to get over at this flow, we would've been better scouting from river left)
    17:10 FALLS CREEK #3 SCOUT
    17:51 FALLS CREEK #3

I think, as I understand it, you got Surprise/Citadel, Elk Creek and Mule Kick/Deer Creek kind of mixed up a little. Surprise/Citadel and Elk Creek are very close to each other and are likely just one big rapid at higher flows... I didn't actually see Surprise in your vid. Mule Kick is the one with an easy right channel. One of the trip reports kind of gets those all confused too, so understandable why it might get mixed up. I could be completely wrong though, but the pictures in the trip report/description on that Cali Creeks site don't match the descriptions very well. I know I've been told that the one labled as Greyhound in that trip report is actually called Hettinger. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter and I don't really mind that there are sorta vague descriptions of this run and that people have to figure it out for themselves.
Ran it for the 2nd time a few days before you guys in a group of Cats, Rafts and Kayaks and had a blast. Your guys favorite rapid is my favorite of that stretch of Class IV read and run after the pack bridge for sure. Thanks for the video.

upon quick review I still think our ID'ing is accurate to the california creeks descriptions so gonna leave it-- that said it is weird that "elk creek" (easy right channel) is above "deer creek" even though the order of the creeks is the other way around. Figured that the Surprise rapid in this vid is accurate simply because it felt IV+ and it caught us by surprise-- didn't intend to read and run it
