The prices of everything now is absolutely ridiculous. Started with Upper Deck and Panini carried on the tradition. Topps gets a pass as the majority of their products are priced fairly. I just watch box break videos at this point or buy singles.
@@alexkoos7876 Yeah but the point is collecting these days is garbage with products like this. Even if really rich why would you wanna open this and get hosed. Pretty pathetic stuff
I remember spending $6.00 (six) dollars on a full box, 36 packs of 1991 Score Baseball... I pulled a Mantle auto, sold it for $500 on the spot... Those were the good days... I don't give anyone a hard time for what they spend or what they pull... It's all a gamble...
Nice pull! I opened so much of that garbage and loved every second of it. Every time I saw one of those green cards in the pack I'd get excited. Never pulled an auto, though.
$500 in 1991? By whom, a complete moron? Any of those /2500 Mantles could be had for like $50 in 1991. Hell one just sold in Feb of this year for $300.
@@snerdterguson cards are what you make them. They are absolutely NOT an investment to me. I'm a collector, so are millions of others. My collection might be worth something but I'd never stake any of my economic future on it. To me, calling my cards an "investment" takes the fun out and brings the grimeyness in. I'm not saying card investors are grimey, I think there's a lot of people who call themselves that and they are chum for the scammers.
@@paulnicholson5937 You completely missed the point. If you change this much for cards, you shouldn't be filling the product with stuff no one cares about. Getting cuts etc is expensive, but getting the top tier players to sign does not cost nearly what they're charging. In reality all card boxes should give you 50% ROI, which means the total value should be about half what you paid for the box.
These cards are "high end" but I'm not seeing the individual cards sell for anywhere close to what you'd need to get your money back. Usually if the box price keeps jacking up its because the boxes are still undervalued but I just don't see the value in these at all. Like a Julio auto /5 gets you about half your money back... how could a box ever pencil out? At least with a lot of insanely priced Panini products if you hit one of the top guys out of 5 you'll at least double your money back
You probably have to hit one "monster" per box to break even. But it's a pyramid scheme. You can only sell to other "collectors", the cards really have zero intrinsic value. They are produced specifically to be collected. Claiming it is a high end product. But these autos are becoming more common and worth less and less like a decaying isotope until one day it all blows up.
Great lesson for a young collector...spend 3500 and get maybe 600 in value. Where has the hobby went? We didn't ever in a million years get ripped off like this in the 90s when there was 3 card shops in every city.
That's what I came up with. And that's assuming the relic actually sells for $60 and factoring in about $150 for the Chipper (I think I'm being very generous) before the chipper, I was thinking he had about the cost of one card in value.
Buying these products is no different than being the sucker at the casino that plays the slot machines that are $100 a pull. We are in a new junk wax era, except this time you can light your money on fire $3500 at a time.
This is the perfect example why not to buy high end boxes.. 5% chance to get your money back and 1% to make a profit.. and if our paying 3500 for a box there shouldn't be a card thats worth under at least 150 to 200 dollars... thats why you buy the cards you want and stop gambling.. and sorry phil for that horrible box.. but i love your channel and keep up the great work
So 3500$ for not even 1 card that worth 350$ it is bad... really bad! At least could have a 1/1 of Chipper Jones... Seriously that is the kind of product that kill the market for more than 10 years now.
People forget this product is very limited, nothing numbered over 25 so there's only so many cards out there so the price per box is going to be up there. I've seen multiple times more than 2 1/1s per box come out but of course some boxes are gonna be like this. I'd only buy this if I had money to burn.
when it says "the relic is not from any specific game, event or season," is it still a game used bat from that player? or is it a team issued bat from the player, not game used? some please clarify for me! Thanks!
@@MrK623 that was at the beginning of the century. all the card companies got trashed for that and are a lot more careful now. even mlb keeps track of what relic comes from what game. if it doesn't say then it's likely just from the player. maybe the bat was bad but it's from the player.
The cards up to and including the Barry Larkin brought you to around $350. If this is a $3500 box for 10 cards..... So total, with quick rounded out math, equalled $588. Sorry man I feel for ya. Glad I don't have the money to spend on these types of boxes. Cool cards though

You weren't spoiled last time... it's just $3.5k for maybe $500 worth of cards. I'd be calling up the CEO of Topps lmao. That shouldn't happen, not at that price point. There should be a minimum assessed value for each box. Even if its $1k
Someone had to pay for Fanatics to buy Topps. It's awesome to get more people into our hobby, but it's becoming a rich man's game. Even a jumbo box of 23 Series 1 isn't worth $229 (or more). People need to stop listing these cards for so cheap too. HOF on card autos should be worth more than $15 to $50, across all releases. Eck, Larkin, Jones...no one seems to want them because there's too much of it out there across too many releases, and no matter what the price point, these cards tend to sell the same. I wish this would change but unfortunately it probably wont.
All of Topps relics are either game worn or player worn it says not from any specific game or event cause they can't tell you the exact game it was taken from or the event if the player just worn it but it always says on the front of the card by the relic if it's game used or player worn
Topps should be ashamed of themselves, plus why are they still. Making cards well into 2023? Doesn't fanatics own all sports cards contracts? Or is topps going to keep making 2022 cards all the way into 2026.
I don't see how they can justify putting those cards in a box that expensive. You should not lose 80% of the value spent for the box. No you shouldn't always make money or break even but they need to work on at least getting 50-75% of your money back you spent. Thanks for the rip
This box is just a prime example of not necessarily a “bad box”, but the ridiculous amount of money people are willing to pay for the gamble of the unknown by ripping.
