    Thanks. I work to eradicate TOH from the Overton Park Old Forest in Memphis, and I have had a lot of trouble telling TOH from sumac. This helps a lot.

      Glad it was helpful! Good luck on ridding the park of TOH. It takes a bit of time but it can be done.

    I recently noticed tree of heaven - ish plants in the google image in front of our property. I need to get out there and investigate. This will help!

    My part of rural Nebraska has a lot of tree of heaven and I've seen smooth sumac growing right alongside it. Very helpful identifying tips

      Thanks! Both species tend to be found in the same disturbed areas.

    On my property both Sumac and TOH grow alongside Black Walnut, which can also look similar. I look for the Walnuts forming just around the same time sumac will flower. Also everything in the Walnut Family has a pleasant aroma when crushed. EDIT: I see you've got that covered too, great job!

    Yayyy! Finally, a way to identify the tree I disliked in my yard. I thought it was a Sumac and didn't want to go chop chop on a native species. So happy I can now get rid of the Tree of Hell, oops, Heaven that is all over my 2 acres. Thanks @Backyard Ecology! I always appreciate your videos.

      Glad the video was helpful! Be aware that the only way to remove tree of heaven is with herbicide - cutting it only causes it to resprout 10 times worse than it was to begin with. Contact your local extension office for guidance on herbicides and methods that can be used in your area.

    We have sumac all over our property but I've never seen the Tree of Heaven. I will have to watch out for it.

      Tree of heaven is everywhere in eastern North America, unfortunately. It stands out once it starts to form fruit clusters.

    I’ve used crushed sumac seed to spice up chicken. I use as a rub. It gives it a lemony citrus taste.

      They can also be used to make a lemonade like drink.

      @@BackyardEcology I gotta get that recipe. There’s enough sumac around here to drink it year round.

    I have these trees that look very much like the tree of heaven. They do stink when cut, but I 've never seen them bloom, and have lived here since 2008. Is there a tree of heaven that spreads by rhizomes instead of seeds

    • @BackyardEcology
      @BackyardEcology  5 месяцев назад +1

      Tree of heaven will root sprout like crazy if it is cut down or injured. It is a dioecious tree meaning it has male and female trees, so your trees could be male so they won't produce seeds. Regardless I would remove them as the males just pollinate female trees in another location. Tree of heaven is one of the worst invasives in North America.

    Around here the Tree of Heaven is often referred to as the Chinese Sumac.

      Yes, although there isn't much to them. They are often used to make a lemonade like drink.
