Guys... there were cameras at the game. Hence the famous photo of Wilt. There were thousands of fans watching the game who can tell us what happened. There were scorekeepers (both official and unofficial) same as there are now. There were multiple people who recorded the game and you can listen to the radio broadcast right now online.
They were playing in Hershey, PA against an awful Knicks team. Why the heck would television companies send a camera crew when they didn't go to every game anyways? That Knicks team ended up 29-51. That game was basically a blow out and the Warriors players just purposefully did what they could to get Wilt to 100 (if only to add some excitement). This is the same season where Wilt averaged 50pts and the inflation of possessions and points makes it possible to score 100.
Kobe's 81 is arguably more impressive because of how close the game was and the relative pace of the era, but Wilt scored 100. This isn't a theory, it's a fact.

As some people have already said, the real issue is not about teams taking 3's and using analytics to score that is a good thing.
The problem is that defense is too restricted by comparison. A simple fix would be to dial back the no-contact on defense rules and remove 3 second rules like they have in FIBA so bigs can guard the paint properly.

I was born in the mid 80s, and I'll easily say basketball is crazy and beautiful to watch now. If there is a complaint to have, and it's not analytics, it's with the rise of analytics, we've seen further handicapping of defense and looser standards for the offense (moving screens, rolling screens, carries being default handling); between those 2 issues, it makes analytics ball seem dishonest, the defenders have to play at such a high level to be just "good" it makes me wonder how effective analytics would be without it's current vacuum.

You don't know a player is going to drop 100 points before the game starts. Televising games costs money and still does today hence the reason their a couple "Nationally Televised" games while most games are not nationally televised. In the 60s, basketball still being something that only existed as a professional sport a little over 10 years at that point, the NBA would not have the funding to spend on a throw away regular season game. The reason you have full game footage of Bill vs Wilt in the finals is because it's ya know, the NBA finals, you as a company would want to spend your money on what is supposed to be the most important game you can possibly have, regardless of what the outcome is, it's a big moment. This is something you can logically deduce just from putting things into context. Why Agent got so upset to the point of yelling is absolutely insane though XD. you mean we just gonna act like Andre Drummond, a back up tier center that averages 8 & 8, this season having a fucking 24 point 20 rebound game as something not crazier than one of the top 15 All Time players getting 100 points while ball hogging against scrubs? You can't say "oh they are playing plumbers" but then say "no way he scored 100" those ideas are conflicting. And if they were to "lie and make it up" why only one game? Why only a single 100 point game, why not 2? Why not give Bill Russell a 57 rebound game while we're at it? The final score was 169-147, players today are dropping 70+ in games where both teams have over 120 points, Kobe dropped 81 in a game that had a final score of 122 - 104. Getting 100 points in a game with scores over 140 points each isn't crazy if anything it adds up.

Another problem with scoring is that we are witnessing an evolution of the game just as powerful as the 3 point revolution, but for some reason we just don't put the 2&2 together. Embid is a 7'1 five shooting middis something most 5s can't defend and Luka is a 6'8 guard being able to cook 1-5s and is usually guarded by a 6'4 point guard. It's not lack of defense, not shitty coaches its a personnel problem. In the coming years there will be more 6'8 guards that will be able to better defend Luka from a physical perspective if nothing else.
1-5s will get bigger what we are seeing is just a start, and the few player's that outsize their position and are just as skilled are dominating right now.

Actually it was like that for most of the history of the nba. Plus why would they lie for a black man in the 60s. I agree with a lot of the complaints about current NBA defenses. They are being handicapped in their effectiveness because the rules do favor offensive players now, especially when it comes to fouls. However, let's say that the NBA changed the rules again to help the defenses even the playing field. FIBA rules, sans lack of goaltending. 1) That will not stop the best offensive players. They probably won't be droppping 60+ or 70+, but they can still bust your favorite team's ass for 40+ or 50+ on any given night. They didn't become as good as they are by not evolving or changing their game. 2) Something called reading and reacting. When the NBA changed the rules to favor offense more, defenses adjusted. If they do that for defenses now, offenses will adjust, too. We'll probably see more ball/player movement, less isos, more post ups so the big can draw contact and get to the line, actual plays being called to counter the defense, etc. Every action has a reaction. You win the games by having more points on the board than the other team, not just by shutting them down.
I see the point, but there's a lot of other factors that those people are not considering.

Wilt's game was exactly 100 because he hit free throws to get to 100 because eventually all the other team could do was foul. And once he hit 100, wilt intentionally missed the rest of his shots and free throws because he thought the round number of 100 was cooler and looked prettier than, say, 103, or 107.

Although high paced basketball has been the style of play for the majority of the NBAs history, There’s a reason why the 90s and 00s are by and large considered the best eras. BALANCE is key. Nobody wants to see a sport that’s 90% offense and 10% defense

I've found that current day NBA just isn't for me. I still love the game of basketball, I still do watch highlights and I do listen in to keep up, but I'm not invested. It's a combination of things like the style of play, for the most part, just isn't attractive to me, the officiating just seems off (travelling, carrying, reaching in etc etc, the classic complaints), and a few other things.
It's not for me, so I just don't watch games. I just seem to enjoy FIBA rules more. That said I also know that there is someone else out there that enjoys the hell out of current day NBA. It is what it is.🤷‍♂

Nah, wilt not scoring a hundred is hot fucking ass. In 1961? For a black man? Hell no. Also, Wilt took 63 shots, made 36 of them, and got to the line 32 times. Which means he shot the ball at least 79 times, if not more due to and one's. That was only his second most free throw attempts of the season, too. About 10 days earlier on February 22, he took 34 of them shits. He had 4 separate 30+ fta games, two 60+ fga games, and five 50+ fga games in that season alone. He had 42 40+ fga games and 60 30+ fga games. This dude put up everything. He had the greenest green light in the history of the NBA. He was chucking everything. And his teammates tried to get him to 100 after he had 70 in the third, and he still holds the record for most fgas in a quarter with 21, which he took in the fourth. It was basically his version of D Books 70 point game.
Wilt's truly, completely unbreakable bullshit record imo will always be the fact that he averaged 48.5 minutes per game that season. People could probably replicate some of Wilts bullshit if they played all 48 minutes of every single game and took 40 shots per game, but no modern NBA player is ever going to be allowed to do either of those things. There's a decent number of dudes that could drop 100 if they had 63 shots and 32 free throw attempts to get it, even without the 3.

  • @superSIZEmee

Y’all said all that & didn’t address the fact that without empowering the defenders then the further the game gets from being competitive…!!!!
And I think after watching every possession getting dumped into the paint in throughout the 80’s-90-‘s & then teams going more towards shooting 3’s, I think the natural progression would’ve been a mixture between the two & not completely getting rid of competitive play…!

We need to stop saying Ad should be our first option you basically asking Ad to be the best defender on the team and make up for dlo and Reaves awful defense, you asking Him to be the best rebounder, and you are asking him to be a post playmaker, now you want the offense to run threw him (pause). It's idiotic because when you have Lebron a top-5-ish offensive player why would will tell our second-best offensive player to control the offense. We also need to stop acting like age matters for Lebron even if he's 39 he is getting paid like a first-option and he is playing like a first-option. The reason this team have been so bad offensively because we are getting the ball to Ad waiting until he gets double and creating our offense from there we need to either give Lebron the ball or have Lebron play off-ball as he has but create more pin downs, more open 3point attempts, more post-ups, more cuts while still allowing him to be ball dominant when he has 3 shooters in the lineup and a lot of pick n rolls. If we haven't noticed that when we played our best basketball it came in the IST when Lebron 26pts, 8reb and 8ast and controlled a lot of our offense on and off the ball. Ad averaged 23 points, 14 reb and 3 blocks in these games we beat the Pacers, pelicans, and Suns who all are top 6th teams in their conference. All I'm saying is let Lebron score the points while Ad play defense we can't have one player do everything on offense when we have a player who is simply better on offense
