There's a much easier way to solve it. You can slide the triangles around to make a big square (side length equal to the hypotenuse of a triangle (3)) with a small square cut out of it (side length 1). Then the total area of the triangles is 3^2 - 1^2 = 8, so dividing by 4 we get 2.
