I'm freaking rolling at the intro 😂😂😂 I have this one on the list to get with my September book budget 😊 I did watch the movie, but one of my friends said it didn't do the book justice.
Glad I could make at least one person laugh 😅 I've heard several people that loved the book tell me that the movie was awful, mostly because it throws the book out after about 10 minutes.
Great intro! 😂 I had those nostalgia feels aswell even though I'm a 90s kid. I agree with your "negative" points but thought the book was an overall fun read and I could get past those things. Great review and can't wait to see your thoughts on RP2.
Sounds intriguing! All the 80s nostalgia might be fun in a cringey sort of way. Having been a teenager in the 80s, I look back on the era with mild embarrassment. I hadn’t heard of this, so thanks for the review!
Philip Chase, you look young to have been an 80s teen! You would probably get even more of the references than I did! It was well done for all the cringey decade references.
Johanna Ha ha! Thanks! All the white hair in my beard is evidence of my 80s teenager years, plus my high school yearbooks, which I wouldn’t be eager to share with anyone.
Great review and the first thing I've heard about it that actually might make me want to read this book. JOUST!!! Ostriches for the win. What a fun game.
Great review! I listened to the audiobook a few years ago - it was narrated by Will Wheaton which was so awesome. Totally get your negative points though. I really enjoyed it while I was reading but I forgot so many of the details a few days later lol! I’m excited to give the sequel a try!
I agree. It was a popcorn flick and since I love that 80s nostalgia which is why I hated the movie. Haha It was a fun read. I really enjoyed it. It was written in a very basic way but that was the point. It wasn’t meant to be super complicated and I appreciated that. Glad you enjoyed it
I enjoyed the audiobook version last year, but I don’t think I will read the sequel or watch the movie. I was very impressed with the execution though I felt a little detached from the characters. I loved your intro!
@@alexnieves I'm addicted now to watching others play games on twitch and it's making me want to play games again. Once I have a job again [covid] I'm going to save up for the switch
Hey Alex. It's a good book for what it is. I honestly don't agree with the 'it should do social commentary' idea. That's not what the book was trying to do. Also, the millionaire in question had severe issues associating with people. He's 'weird' 😋. As for the movie. It's fine for what it is, but for those who were expecting/hoping for a pure book to movie, they were doomed to be disappointed. Having to redo Monty Python's Holy Grail works great in a book because we're not stuck for 2+ hours watching all of that. In movie format, it would have been boring. The movie changes a lot of the challenges to make them visually exciting but still have a retro feel.I get that not everyone loved it, but it was fine.
Yeah that's ultimately why I said I enjoyed it for what it was, and I don't think Cline was going for much social commentary. I enjoyed it as a popcorn flick and that's what he was going for.
The OASIS would be cool as hell! For MTG I really only play MTGA now since it's impossible to get my friends group together for physical magic anymore. My go-to decks are always big green beast decks or some kind of clan (vampire, sliver, etc). Since MTGA waa mostly standard only until recently, I'm playing a lot of Gruul.
Gruul is what I play too. I got into it playing EDH or Commander or whatever it’s called now. I built a Trample deck that had huge beasts and then tokens that just trampled through everyone.
I had forgotten enough about the book by the time the movie came out, that I was able to enjoy the movie. It was still fun and I really liked the big battle scene at the end even if it was done differently. Being from OKC, I was miffed they moved the Stacks to Columbus, Ohio. But I always try to treat movie adaptations as their own thing and keep them separate from a book I enjoyed.
I read and watched this with my book club. The book was unanimously enjoyed and the movie was unanimously hated 😂 I liked the book quite a bit, it's so fun and the ending scene was exciting. My main issue was the 80's info dump in the first 100 or so pages.
Maybe the worst book i’ve ever read, just to make sure, i’m rereading it, and i’m going to read the sequel on the day it comes out. I need help, i’ve just been sick in my mouth
I had a lot of fun with it too and am looking forward to the release of Ready Player Two. =) and yeah...the movie was soooo different, the book was so much better imo.
@@alexnieves Maybe you'll be able to enjoy it more since you know going in that it's going to be way different? That aspect for me was the biggest let down of the movie for sure. :P
Really enjoyed the book, even if it could have been a little deeper and some of the nostalgia felt shoe horned in. The movie was a complete waste of my time and money.
Great review! I did have some major issues with the book especially with using marginalized identities as plot twists and the huge white savior motif. I loved the references and I am a bit baffled as to why it is getting a sequel.
Not a clue about why he's making a sequel either! You have a good point about the identity plot twist, I can't say I was surprised by who Aech really was. Immediately when they talk about Wade having not met these people I was like ok this dude is gonna end up not being a guy.

I didn't get all of the references, but I did have a great time reading it. Not sure how I feel about the need for a 2nd book though.
I agree. I'm cautiously optimistic for the sequel but I also don't know why it's getting a sequel.

I’d love to see something like the Oasis in our reality.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense and is a good approach. It is an adaptation after all.
Not the greatest piece of literature but an enjoyable piece non the less!
For sure!

I liked the plot and disliked the main character. Ended up giving it around three stars.
I don't blame anybody for not liking Wade.
The book is definitely fun. I’ve seen worse movies, but it is a fairly poor adaptation.
Yeah from the looks of the movie it's not faithful to the book really at all.
