ive had an 07 gl 450 for 170000 miles its an amazing car the fuel economy is that of 9 mpg (i have a lead foot) and iv had to replace both air ride bags 3 times on each side it eats through air ride bags and springs (about 890 to replace one side 1600 to replace both rear and same for the front) all in all i love the car i test drove a 2018 gls 550 and it felt too electronic the only thing i wish for on the gl is more horsepower and faster gear changes
Funny how the American definition of large is totally different than everywhere else in the world 😂 The GL could be classified as large but definitely not XL, and the Q7 would be a midsize SUV in the States. Over here it's not uncommon to see F250's being used as daily drivers... depending on model, they're up to 6 1/2m long and 2m tall🙄

With a 4x4, even family oriented ones like these, it's good to know that you're driving a vehicle which has the capability to take you off road if you are faced with such a situation. What I was saying with my comment is that this test should be based on their off roading capabilities, not their practicality. Or even both, but because they are off road vehicles, they should be primarily tested for their off road use.
Every country makes different kinds of cars so you can't say this country makes a better car or this country should stop making cars. Some people like big husky cars and some like small little coupes! You can't compare a dodge pickup to a Ferrari!

they are called sports utility vehicles, they are not made for off road what so ever, they made them so that they can go off road but they are ment to be driven on road, audi a6 and a8 are both 4 wheel drive but again they are for road use

Mercedes has better looks, more comfort, more cargo. After time the q7 does not handle as good as it use to. Last I want to see the q7 attempt to achieve 30mpg like the gl class does. At worst my turbo diesel gl gets 28 on the highway. So this is my non biased review having both. Didn't know which direction to go in the beginning. Gl class hands down. Interior also held together better. No noise.
Subaru has best all wheel driven system in cars now. Symmetric all wheel drive. Volvo has best rust protection among all production cars now. It has also longest lasting engines and best safety and comfort. D5 diesel can easy make 700 000 km. The same like Mercedes, but Mercedes rusts much more than Volvo. Most reliable is Honda, Subaru Mazda and Toyota. Most satisfied clients has Lexus. German cars are not best in any discipline. Maybe only in price - they are most expensive.
Daniel Z A Subaru forester is no were near as good as a Mercedes GL off road nor would it be as comfortable to drive off road. Subaru's AWD technology is very impressive and for 99% of SUV buyers it is suitable for. Now for people that want serious off road driving the GL is more for this and it offers comfort. But if a person wants a hardcore off road vehicle then the Mercedes GL is not for them and obviously they already know this. The would more than likely go for a G class, Land Rover defender, Toyota Land Cruiser or Jeep.
Statens Vegvesen well. i have a GL 450 and my wife just bought the 2017 forester. its a dam good car and full of saftey features. the lane departure and self cruise control are much better than in my GL. I never been a subaru fan, in fact I wanted the CRV or RAV4, but these forester is a dam good car. the touring version is my favorite. i dont change my GLS but these little suv is well worth it

I would prefer the Audi as it looks much better than the Merc and the interior looks classy. On off roading, We should wait for the 2015 Audi Q7 because it has a completely new platform, dumping the old chassis. I would definitely purchase the Q7
Adima Sund mercedes have a history of producing Amazing off road Vehicles and this GL is part of that. And it is also very comfortable to drive and be a passenger. Now a Q7 is beautiful and very comfortable to be in but it is not as good of road as a GL. The point of a GL is to be good off road and also be comfortable.

12 years later and our 2010 GL450 with 165k miles is still going strong. Looks near new, and no problems besides a starter replacement.
