A conversation with artist Mary Kelly on the occasion of her newest publication, Mary Kelly's Concentric Pedagogy (2024). Highlighting one of the book's three sections, "The Method"-which focuses on Kelly's renowned method of "ethical observation" within studio critique-artists Kerry Tribe and Dont Rhine will share their experiences as Kelly's students and explore the influence that the feminist practice of concentric pedagogy has had on their studio practices.
The program was moderated by the book's editor Juli Carson.
Juli Carson is professor of art at the University of California, Irvine. She is the author of several publications, including Exile of the Imaginary: Politics, Aesthetics, Love (2007), The Limits of Representation: Psychoanalysis and Critical Aesthetics (2011), and The Hermeneutic Impulse: Aesthetics of An Untethered Past (2019).
Mary Kelly is a conceptual artist, author and educator. Her large-scale narrative installations and theoretical writings address questions of sexuality, identity, and memory. Her exhibitions include major surveys at Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester; and the Centre for Contemporary Art, Warsaw, as well as representation in the 1993 and 2004 Whitney Biennials, the 1982 and 2008 Biennales of Sydney, and Documenta 12. Her publications include Post-Partum Document (1983), Imaging Desire (1996), and Mary Kelly's Concentric Pedagogy (2024). She is a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and is currently the Judge Widney Professor at the Roski School of Art and Design, University of Southern California.
Dont Rhine is a sound artist, AIDS activist, and educator based in Los Angeles. He is the co-founder of the Los Angeles Tenants Union. Rhine received his MFA from UCLA in Interdisciplinary Studio in 2006 and is a previous Whitney Museum Independent Study Fellow.
