distillation column, also known as a distillation tower or fractional distillation unit, is a crucial piece of equipment in a refinery. It acts like a giant still, separating the complex mixture of crude oil into its various components based on their different boiling points.
Here's a breakdown of its role:
Function: The column separates crude oil, a mixture of numerous hydrocarbons, into different "fractions" based on their volatility. Lighter components with lower boiling points vaporize and rise up the tower, while heavier components with higher boiling points remain as liquid at the bottom.
Process: Crude oil is first heated to around 700°F (400°C). This hot oil is then injected into the bottom of the column, where it partially vaporizes. As the vapors rise, they encounter a series of trays or packing material. These increase the surface area for interaction between the vapor and a descending stream of liquid called reflux.
Separation: Components with lower boiling points readily evaporate and travel upwards with the rising vapors. As they travel, they encounter cooler liquid descending from the top of the column. This cooler liquid condenses some of the vapor, enriching the vapor in lighter components. This process happens repeatedly on each tray, gradually separating the various fractions.
Products: Lighter fractions like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel are collected from the top of the column, while heavier components like heating oil and asphalt are collected from the bottom.
The distillation column is the first major step in the refining process. It sets the stage for further processing of these fractions into the various petroleum products we use daily.

Inside se platform Tak lane ke liye manually and rope ka use hota h aur platform se ground floor per lane ke liye rope Pulley, winch ya phir crane ka use Kiya jata h as per availability
