I'm a Dave guy through and through but Sam was the right pick at the right time for VH to move forward and continue. His voice brings a new perspective to it and to be honest, was needed.
They each brought their own to the band, but VH would have never been there for Sammy to join, if it weren't for the original four that made VH...VH. You just can't touch the first 6 albums. And I am a guy that loves and has seen every single incarnation in concert. Long live the mighty VH!
@Retiredhoghed it was needed in the sense Dave brought us Eat Em Smile, which would not have happened if he stayed with VH. By that point, both sides were holding each other back with the bs and fighting. That in itself kept both camps relevant. Sam has a register that works with Ed's tone listen to the sound Sam projects and Ed's tone, they blend in harmony most of the time. Dave and Vai were on a different mission, that ended up working better than anyone could of thought.
I don't dislike Sammy, I love his solo stuff and Montrose and he seems like a good guy. He's a good singer, but I never really thought he was a good voice for Van Halen.

People get their digs on Sammy, but the thing most people overlook is his unbelievable range. Just in the few moments of this clip, he hits notes in full voice that 95% of most male singers would have to falsetto. Incredible.
I was just thinking and saying to myself quietly aloud who is in a similar league to Sammy. After a couple of seconds I thought of Klaus Meine from The Scorpions. I could imagine each of them singing each other's songs well.
Van Hagar deserves the level of respect Black Sabbath's Dio period has. They had some absolutely great songs that were themselves a huge part of the 80s. Despite the lineup change, VH was still the band to beat.
I think the rack Tom is dw and the rest is Ludwig. Just playing around with studio room tones. He seems to do that. Tama rosewood snares. Black beauty. Etc...
Sammy has a much better voice than DLR but I still like Van Halen better in the DLR era. I love Sammy in Montrose and his solo work more than his work in Van Halen. He sounds great here though. I wonder what Mikey could have done to not be asked to join the reunion. Wolfgang is a very talented guy, but the entire original line up would have really been cool to see live.

They could’ve done anything they wanted to record in 95. But, instead a blatant attempt to appease grunge fans with a grungy remake of Poundcake. End of the band and the beginning of Eddie’s trips to rehab. A masterpiece by grunge standards but also what a waste of Van Halen’s talents.
It is what it is...they were mega...some things...go too fast...sure ed and al were aliens...and crazy ed...really got lost. Sammy and Mike are just total horses..they work...the bros...magical..I hope Sammy's tour this summer goes well....al banging on the drums...Ed's smile...it's still clear in many fans heads
