As a bassist myself,John Wetton became a favorite immediately, such an incredibly talented musician and vocalist,I truly Love and miss him dearly.God Bless you John and Thank You for all the incredible music, with everyone youve played with.Love from F.T.
I was fortunate enough to meet John Wetton during a record store album signing for the first Asia album. I had him sign my copy of Red. Funny enough, after signing he ended by putting a big dot on Robert Fripp’s face. A year later, around the time of Crimson’s Beat, I met Bill Bruford who signed my Red album. He signed his name, saw the dot the Wetton put on Fripp’s face, and proceeded to put a big dot on Wetton’s face. Came close to meeting Fripp, but it didn’t happen.
JOHN WETTON this afternoon I felt a deep cut in my heart. You are not with us anymore. Well… all I have to say is THANK YOU. Your songs from Asia, King Crimson, Uriah Heep and other bands helped me confront the bleak life and the alienated teenage years in Brazil during the 70’s and 80’s. You made my life happier, shared my hardships and the good moments. Your songs also helped me shape into a person that I am today and I am very thankful for you. RIP from Brazil
Priceless interview... thank you Eric Blair for this and for letting John talk and for the great questions. One of the best voices ever known by mankind, a tremendous bass player and incredible musician. We miss you John Wetton, but your legacy will live on forever. A fan from Mexico
Watching this 3 days after John's death...such a humble, eloquent man. Loved California but came back to Bournemouth to die. So hard to connect his ease and humour in this piece with the fact he's not with us anymore. RIP x x
It is damn nice to see and hear an interviewer who knows his subject. It is an addition that he is a fan. And thank you RUclips for being around to hold these memories. Reader......if you were not around pre-internet, you can't imagine how valuable RUclips is to access the people and music you like.
triarii11 Imagine having this resource when we were kids. Incredible. On the flip side, I couldn’t imagine living my childhood with my face buried in my phone like kids today.
That is sad that he's gone...The first time I heard ' Heat of the moment 'was back I in Hungary In 1983..I loved it right away...I still can't believe that they told him that he was to old at age 30!!!
I am from Brazil, 22 years old, and love John Wetton. My dad was very much into prog in the 1970s, but I discovered Wetton by myself, through Asia, and later, King Crimson. It´s very nice to see/hear such a long interview - he looks comfortable talking to you. Thanks for sharing it, Eric!!
I'm watching this for the first time. What an experience! Imagine how poorer the world could've been without John's contribution. I'm also thrilled to find out about the importance of Kalodner in John's career. I wanna write so many things about him but there's no point really. Legend...
John, RIP. Thanks for your major contributions to the soundtrack of Eric and my existence. Thanks for taking the time to sit down with Eric and me and sharing your candid thoughts in 1997. "This night wounds time."
Excellent interview. Thanks for the upload. Was a big fan of Asia. Saw them at the Fox Theater in Stockton, California on May 24, 1982. Short set included Heat of the Moment. ‘Twas a good show,, but loud.
John Whetton, 5 years ago I got a copy of 'Watcher' with you singing. It's how I tested car stereos and never saw you. Not long ago, I saw you doing 'Firth' and was surprised you played bass. (I know this sounds dumb.) And yesterday, I was turned on to 'Starless' which I've heard in several versions now. U.K. reunion is the best. But now you are...my idol. I thought at 60, I'd be over that. Thank you sir.
Eric, you're an outstanding interview host. Knowledgeable, thoughtful, respectful, and an infectious enthusiasm. Best Wetton interview I've seen. Subbed; I'll definitely recommend your channel to others. Cheers!
Wow, John Wetton is a really fair dinkum bloke. I had no idea he's done so much in the music industry. Knew about UK, and Asia of course, and his solo stuff, but not his other work. Brilliant. And he's spot on with his appraisal of the Asia albums he was a part of, as you'd expect. Incredible records, all three of them.
Fantastic. Thank you, Eric. Without efforts like yours during this period, we'd have a vacuum during this period of history for artists like John. And now that you've transferred it, it's as though interviews this natural and conversational (like we might hear on podcasts now) were readily accessible in 1997 which, of course , was not the case then. As we know, an interview of any sort at all was not something you'd easily come across in 1997 for an artist like this... much less an interview this natural. So, your efforts were/are so important.
Thanks Steve ,The John Wetton interview was important to me after my 1st interview with Dio I was determined to talk to the heros of my youth and it happened and now it's history . I just would have liked to have had a higher quality production ,But at the time I was working with no budget Just Faulty Public Access Cable Equipment . Thanks again Steve You Rock !!!
Love it! Giving it a 3rd watch as your reply popped up. Speaking of pop, Mr. Wetton's blue shirt color is poppin' nicely. It seems to defy any CCD technology.
Excellent interview btw. I have admired John Wetton since becoming a King Crimson fan when I was 14 years old hearing Larks Tongues in Aspic. I saw UK opening Tull in the early 80s with Terry Bozzio and they were amazing. I can't say I was much into Asia but felt that JW certainly deserved huge success and had some huge hits. His voice and bass playing was superlative and of the very best in rock. RIP
a nice interview. you can find more about this outstanding bassist, singer and composer in his twitter account hoping we will see him back on stage after his hard struggle with cáncer 😄😄😄
Thanks for considering southern Cal (L.A.)as home. We love you More!!John. You passed I know, and I'm still thinking of you musically and , you are the best guy that influenced me and my friend(s). Bill Brueford is my favorite drummer percussionist writer! as well!, and you are the best writer and Voice and Bass..
Just heard about John Wetton passing, i pretty much have all of John work from King Crimson to Asia UK and so much more, very sad the best voice in progressive music.
Thank you for posting this John Wetton was a great bassist and singer and appeared to be a very friendly and open person...a good man. R.I.P. John I was always kind of fascinated that John Wetton and Greg Lake had very similar sounding voice both played bass equally great and were both in King Crimson and both passed away so close together, first Greg in Dec 2016 then John Jan 2017, I saw UK and Asia back in the day both bands put on great shows and memorable to this day. There's great videos of John in King Crimson playing the song "Lament" "Easy Money" and "Larks Tongues In Aspic Part1 & 2" ...pretty amazing video quality too and sounds GREAT
I totally agree and feel that Greg Lake was the perfect choice for a temporary replacement. The two had a similar timber to their voices. Strange to have lost two talented musicians a month or so apart.
Umm Greg couldn't sing the songs. *Literally* . Shouldn't say that (That he did "a great job") just because you like him. ... It's disrespectful to Wetton.
@@Cinemagoer_64 His vocal on Smile has Left Your Eyes was absolutely pathetic. And you don't get the point - You can't go make these songs "your own". They're special because of the way Wetton sings them.
I've loved John's music and musicianship for many many moons.. I've also never seen this interview until now.. The guy mentions one of John's reasons for heading to California might be the woman.. One in particular be Joni Mitchell. Today I love John even more! Joni I have loved for many many moons as well. John❤ & Joni❤
I will always think of John Wetton as THE bass player for King Crimson. The 3 studio albums and the live one are my favorite KC records with maybe the exception of "In the Court of the Crimson King". RIP John.
I wished he had had some things to say about his brief stint with Wishbone Ash...would have loved to have heard his thoughts on working with Andy and Laurie. I was not an Asia fan but cut my teeth on King Crimson and Roxy....and loved UK and Quango.
R.I.P. John Wetton! The first that that I have heard about John Wetton was when he was in the band U.K. and I guess that he had a few stints with King Crimson and then he went and formed Asia which was a really good band too!

Interesting, so talented. Odd the way the vid keeps cutting to an unflattering black & white clip of John on stage 🤔 Could have chosen a better clip or clips

John an accomplished musician and a very humble human being RIP!
Really nice interview, I loved where you asked just enough questions and then let John tell the story without being rushed. Wonderful.
Huge Wetton fan since ‘74. Gone way too soon. Great interview!

Mike Stone was my friend. He was a great producer and a lovely human being

Honest and good. Wetton is the king.
Rest in peace the Great John Wetton, loved his work with ASIA, truly enjoy most of ASIA's songs.
Interesting statement by JW regarding the 'Astra' album and it's qualitative superiority to the precedeing efforts - couldn't agree more
Go is the song that got me into Asia!
great voice ,,great bass and what a resume'...thanky
Ironically, a couple of years later the original line up of Asia would reunite! :)
Love john Wetton, saw Asia at Half Time Orange in Leicester decades ago,, lovely guy
Fine work. You can see John is so desperate to say "Yes" to the King Crimson question, but (understandably) cannot quite bring himself to.
King Crimson, USA, LIVE 1973. and Red, amazing.
